Kansas City linebacker Derrick Johnson was the best defensive player in the country during the 2004 college season, but he has yet to make a Pro Bowl in his four NFL years and is coming off a season in which he registered only two sacks.
Chiefs fans were hoping to get the second coming of late Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas when they plunked DJ with the 15th pick of the 2005 draft. And while his 287 career tackles are solid, the 12 sacks in four seasons are just a fraction of what Thomas produced.

Uh...
Thats an insane comparison. DT was going after the QB every snap, DJ has never been a blitzing LB, even from a standing position.
I’m disapointed overall in DJ’s performance in his first four seasons, but its important to remember, that no matter what you think about him, he was still, clearly our best front 7 defender last year…and its not close.
I’d like to get him signed sometime this season, although if there is no resolution to the CBA, then Johnson will not be an UFA next year, he’ll be instead restricted, which is a great position for the Chiefs to be in with him. The Chiefs could then decide what level tender to give him.
A lot of players fit into this niche…it’ll be interesting to watch.

Considering
the level of abilities, coaching handicap, and scheme ran over the past few years, I still see D.J. as a potential Pro Bowl caliber LB. I believe Vrabel will be an excellent mentor and bring out great things in D.J., and the new D schemes may be just what moves D.J. into the next level.
Same goes with many of our younger D picks over the past couple of years. The picks were great, but how they were employed really sucked, and they didn’t have the leadership around them to really lift them up beyond
