Todd Haley addressed this week's release of wide receiver Will Franklin but was short on specifics.
"He was here and he was working," Haley said. "You’ve got to make these decisions sometimes and they’re not always pleasant. We’re trying to find the right guys for the Kansas City Chiefs. At this time, we didn’t feel this was the direction we wanted to go.
"It’s a little bit of your instinct or gut feeling on some of them. You don’t want to make a mistake but you will. You’ll release players that will potentially go on to great careers. That’s happened over and over. But to me it’s finding the right guys for this team."

dodging the question
we’ll never hear a straight answer to this one.

He said he isn't the right guy for the Chiefs
Seems like he gave a reason.

Yep
If you want a dodge, think about what Herm would have said in this scenario.
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

that's not a reason
that’s a PR explanation
it means “there are reasons, but I’m not going to discuss it with the media”
I respect that.
there’s no way they could say a guy with this much talent “doesn’t fit” even before any of the on the field work begins.

Agreed
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

Herm would have said
it just didn’t work out. He will do fine wherever he ends up. Haley has yet to coach a game and all he gets is criticism. We on 6 game the last two years. Lets give this guy a chance to coach and see what he can do.

Rec'd
I agree let Haley show us what he can do with this team on the field before we get too critical of him.

Should I point out the irony of misspelling "retards?"
What the hell is a “retart?” Is it like a Pop Tart?

Some Dude Mispelled "Retard" On A Really Ridiculous FanPost
And we just ran with it.
Plus, I don’t really care for the word “retard” anyway. It’s not really a slur, but it’s kind of a loaded word sometimes. And since we’re really just ripping on each other in a friendly way when we use it, I think “retart” has a nicer ring to it. :)

None, Except Find A New Job :)
I finally came to the conclusion that a large part of the reason I post so much on this site is that I’m really miserable with my current job and need to find somewhere I’ll be more productive.
Not that where I work is bad…it’s actually a very good company, with great people and the job itself is good. It’s just not a good fit for me.

Amazing, anonymous sources mouth Haley but, he never talks negatively about the players. Who has the class, the players or Haley? imo Haley has shown nothing but class when dealing with questions about players and their individual situations.

I don't think any coach wants to run players out of the league or out of a job someplace else.
So for Haley to say that Franklin was a giant bleeding pussy might hurt Franklin’s chances to land someplace else. It’s much classier to just say the guy wasn’t a fit and move on.

Bad Hands
I don’t watch MU football because it’s not my team and I didn’t go to school there but a lot of my friends went there. They told me he droped a lot of balls and the only way he was going to be good in the league is if he learned how to catch. Maybe track is more is forte if this is true. I liked his potential but 7 catches last year? Not someone I am going to loose any sleep over.
by Mostate44 on Apr 17, 2009 3:15 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
If he didn't go to Mizzou...
it’s not even a blip on our radar.
I mean honestly…he only had 7 more catches than me last year.

and 1 more catch than Jeff Webb

If Sammie Parker had seven catches...
we would have seven memorable TD celebrations… without the TDs of course.
by Sudden on Apr 17, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well....
the fact that he was a 4th rounder means it would have shown up on our radar. It probably wouldn’t have garnered as much attention though. Plus, part of the reason he only had 7 catches was due to injury. I’m more concerned with his lack of stats on special teams, which indicates he wasn’t working his ass off like he should have. That’s how you stay on the team if you’re not starting quality. I sure do miss the effort Mike Mislowski (sp?) put in on special teams.
by Chiefs4Life on Apr 17, 2009 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mike Maslowski...
Man, I miss that guy. I our defense in 2003 (the year we went 9-0 and finished 13-3) was actually FAIRLY solid until he tore up his knee again, and was put on injured reserved. It all came crumbling down after that.
by jbj8609 on Apr 17, 2009 5:27 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agree on Maz
I also miss Maslowski, but if you think about it, the concussion he got from hitting Sam Gash from Buffalo also helped end his career. The guy came from nowhere, finally made the cut, rode the bench for ever, then in 2002 broke out to only see it end a year later.
Sad…

I know his time was short, but DAMN he was fun. Wore his heart on his sleeve more than anyone else I’d ever seen. Great kid.

One for for you
I believe his name was La Chapelle, a WR that we signed from a construction crew. That guy played every single play like it would be his last because he knew it could be. Had Franklin played like that, he’d still be on the team.

Gosh he was good.
Sean La Chapelle. I understand the magic of Google, but anyone ever know what happened to him? Or why he was released? He was the one bright spot (as far as receivers were concerned) for that season.

No Idea
He had a decent season with the Rams in 1995, a very nice season in 1996 with the Chiefs, couldn’t get on the field in1997, and then was gone. He had prototype size (6’3", 205) and apparently some speed (over 15 yards per reception with the Chiefrs) and he was only 26 when the Chiefs dumped him, so you’d think somebody would have been interested in him.
Wikipedia’s got nothing on him…just one or two sentences.

He Might Be Living In Canada
This looks like some of the pictures I’ve seen of the guy, but then again most of the time I have trouble identifying non-star football players because we usually only see them in helmets.

What I'm Not Buying
1. The BS PR answer from Haley.
2. That Franklin didn’t deserve to go.
So the speculation was addressed on this site earlier that he was a target of Haley because he was a Herm Edwards guy and that Haley picked on him and rode him so hard that he asked to be released. Seriously? The voluntary workouts have been going on for what—two—three—weeks? It’s not like Haley has been riding him hard for two years and Franklin finally snapped. Franklin snapped in less than a month during workouts. So he got picked on—everybody has favorites and Haley is famous for being confrontational—maybe for no reason other than to see if he can a rise out of a guy. Well he did. If Franklin asked for his release after the end of a season—fine—but I don’t buy the sob story because a few weeks of hard workouts.

Heres my 2 cents
Who cares…Franklin is probably a shitty player. I trust the decision that the staff has made. Even if he was a good player he probably had Larry Johnson Disease or somthing.
