Quinn

Quinn had more potential than just about any coach coming in to Mizzou.
He was a hellova recruiter (though he was shady as can be)

He had talented teams that consistantly underachieved.
Players never seemed to get better under his system.

He also was in charge during one of the ugliest scandals in school history, and was run out of town for it.

so… long story short, he sucked, and did way too much coke.

they finally have a coach, Anderson, that gets a lot out of his players and helps them be better. We did more with less talent this year than just about any other season in school history.

meanwhile, Quinn remains in exile.

I haven't finished watching this but I gotta paraphrase Pioli here

“we’ll pass up a player if there are a strong amount of players there”

With Vrabel, Thomas, and Derrick Johnson could Pioli be hinting at not going Curry??

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

by 808NaNz808 on Apr 16, 2009 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

No I wouldn't go that far.

Vrabel and Thomas have one year maybe two. You don’t put the future of the team in hands like that unless you are a contender now. This seems to be the collective belief now that we have Zach Thomas. I think this couldn’t be further from the Chiefs plans. They need help on defense and already have a franchise left tackle.

while we have a franchise LT we have nothing after our LG. As far as your statement that you don’t put your defense on old dudes I think your firgetting where Pioli is from. Out in New England they had all sorts of old on their LB’s core.

Whio else were they going to take?

They had three pro bowl O linemen, the greatest QB of all time, record breaking wide recievers on both sides, the most solid d line in the NFL, a pro bowl SS, a first round guy at free, and they went on an off season spending spree looking for CB’s to replace the loss of Asaunte Samuels. They just lost Roosevelt Colivin and were in a position where a youngster was going to start…. Wanna try this again??

Sure I will give it a try

You agreed that we have a franchise left tackle. You also say we have nothing after our left guard. We just signed another starter at guard or possibly even center. We need a RT which is not really hard to find. We are also in a position to have a youngster start at linebacker.

are you going off a scouting report of him entering 06 draft?

I do know that Hali is one the hardest working players on this team so i honestly dont think that will be a problem. he came into the draft as a 270 something 4-3 DE, and im pretty sure if he dropped 20 pounds like he will this offseason his speed should improve

I know he’s too slow because he was a 1st round pick of ours coming on 4 years ago. So somebody invested in that heavily, particularly picked by my favorite team, I tend to pay a lot of attention to. So now that I’ve had 3 full seasons to watch him, I’d say I’ve had enough time to “get to know” the player they call Tamba Hali

He's a prototypical 4-3 LDE

He’s not fast enough to even play RE. He was never scouted by 3-4 teams because he was never considered an OLB prospect. I’d love to see him succeed at the role but it ain’t happening. I love Tamba (we’re good friends as evidenced by our ball game) but I think he’d be best playing 4-3 whereas DJ for instance, I think he will be benefited by the changing of schemes

Attn Todd Haley: "DO U WANNA FIGHT ME!?"

by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 16, 2009 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions

wrap your head around this

he was drafted to be a DE because thats where he wanted to play. if hes forced to, he could change his workout up so he could drop to the 250 lbs range thus becoming faster. Derrick Johnson has a harder road to travel IMO, he needs to gain some serious muscle wieght if hes gonna be playing OLB in the 3-4, but if they put him at ILB then hes probley alright where hes at

by squarebender on Apr 16, 2009 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Funny

I figured he was drafted to be a DE because thats where he always played. I think its more likely teams draft you to play what position you’ll do best at, not where you want to play (just ask Nate Harris from Oklahoma)

theres pleanty of DEs who get converted to OLB

I never said "franchise" left tackle

4.5 sacks allowed in a spread offense is good, but it’s not franchise worthy. Goff is a solid RG but he’s no RT and the ends are where all the fastest guys come. RT are easy to find yes, but are first year starters at RT easy to find? No. Having two bookends at tackle gave Denver a solid O

"bookends"

why do people use that word so often? i get what it represents but its just a really wierd way to say that you have 2 great takles. Albert has the potential to be the LT of the future but i dont think its nessary to “pigeon hole”(another stupid word pairing) yourself by saying theres no need to even consider drafting another LT calibur player. with that third pick you need to improve your team in some type of meaningful way. being set at both Tacle spots for the forseeable future i think falls under that “meaingful” catagory. Aaron Curry on the other hand doesnt really do that for mefor several reasons. Its kinda like the Tamba Hali situation were in right now. Hes a talented player who doesnt have a track record for playing at LB. now i do think he could do it, but if he wasnt on my team already i probly wouldnt take a chance on him in the first round of the 06 draft. you gotta be damn near certain that Aaron Curry can do what you bring him in here for (rushing the passer). if your not a 100% then you pass on him that high up in the draft.

by squarebender on Apr 16, 2009 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

you have run blocking tackles, you have pass blocking tackles then you have bookend tackles who do both. They’re tackles that shutdown the front seven on their respective sides of the ball with speed, size and power.

i hear what your saying but i dont think its correct

isnt Bookend just refering to Bookends (these things http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bookend). its gotta be where the term derives from. maybe it does mean what you saying but i doubt you knew its definition off the top of your head. i might be worng though…

by squarebender on Apr 16, 2009 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

i looked up the term "bookend" and

lead me back to arrowheadpride. it was a comment you made 2 days ago where you describe bookend tackle as being a tackle you can only find in the top 15 picks of the draft. that description leads me to think that you didnt know what a “bookend tackle” was 2 days ago and had to look it up when i called you on it a few moments ago. its fine with me though

by squarebender on Apr 16, 2009 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't know there was an exact definition

I just identify with tackles like Orlando Pace, Will Shields, and Jonathan Ogden as bookends. The description I use simply defines those tackles

So no. Pioli said the same thing only in a nice way. No hints at not drafting Curry. With Pioli’s logic you would know that linebacker is a position you look to upgrade taking into account BPA and need.

wheres Curry going?

Detriot isnt even pondering the idea of drafting him, and no team (even the Oakland Raiders) is dumb enough to trade up to one of the top 2 position to get him. IMO Pioli said everything he could to indicate to people that Curry wont be a Chief next season without actually saying it.

by squarebender on Apr 16, 2009 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Curry is one of the best players in the draft.

The rest of your post was just jibberish. Sorry. Just couldn’t understand what you were getting at. There are players that teams may be willing to trade up to get. It may not be Curry. But, again, nothing that Pioli said would make you think that the Chiefs would not be considering what has already been established – that Curry is one player that stands to be a premier player at linebacker for whichever team that picks him. In a 3-4 defense you want great players at every spot and some good depth as well.

is it the part where i mention Pioli “actually saying it”? or maybe “where’s Curry going”? yeah i dont really understand any of that either. But, it’s clear that they are willing to trade picks…

I like the “no” answer when asked if they are looking to trade veterans that have asked for a trade. “players who are under contract are not the ones who decide if they will be here or not”

ya that sounded like a jab

Why does it sound like

were going to be waiting longer than 30 minutes to hear the Chiefs first pick?

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

And what about the media?

All of these interesting and relevant topics we talk about in here, and then the d-bag media can’t even touch on half of them. WTF is wrong with the last ass-nozzle asking what their memorable moments are of John Madden? Who gives a shit. This is about the Chiefs and the questions should be asked accordingly. I’m just saying, it pissed me off. What say you?

One of my favorite quotes:

“a player under contract does not make decisions as to whether to they’re going to be here…”

Everything about that press conference puts a smile on my face

And it seems not enough of you are sharing that same sentiment. Pioli and Haley appear to be a great team together. I don’t know about you all but, given Pioli’s past success and accomplishments, if the head coach shares the same belief system and opinions about what it takes to win Super Bowls as Scott freakin Pioli then you’re off to a great start heading into the draft. It seems that the types of players they are looking for are already different then what we’ve been used to seeing around here as of late. You know what I mean? Something’s different. And to hear their opinion of Bobby Engram was quite interesting. It reminded me that it was quite humorous reflecting how each of Pioli’s recent transactions has left me saying “why didn’t I think of that?” when it seems so obvious AFTER the transaction! It shows his business saavy when it comes to these things. The guy traded a 2nd round pick and got Matt Cassell. Awesome! Oh, and Mike Vrabel too. What? That’s just smooth. Made perfect sense! But nobody saw it coming.

Pioli is as advertised it seems and it’s not even draft day. And I can’t help but like that obnoxious prick Haley.

Let's pray Haley is a smart coach.

In the initial tubes thus far, he doesn’t seem like he’s good in front of a camera. But, I could really care less. I personally hate talking to people too. (I’ll never be a salesman) I am interested in how he can talk to players and whether he can motivate them. And, I don’t care what tactics he has either as long as he can communicate with his obnoxious prick tone. He does seem kind of like the guy you could talk shit with in the garage while changing out an engine. Let’s just pray he has the tools!

If Herm and Peterson were still here, we'd surely be drafting a kicker with the #3 overall. That would solve our kicking problems forever!!!

I was kidding about Haley

being an “obnoxious prick” and I hope you picked up on that.

This is the change we asked for.

And everything that has happened thus far is what we have (well, MOST of us) been clamoring for for quite some time now. We got a GM with one of the best track records in the game. A head coach that loves this game and takes it as seriously as anyone and doesn’t take shit from anybody. He doesn’t beat around the bush. He has a plan. The same plan as Scott Pioli. They refer to it as a blueprint. And that blueprint includes Super Bowls apparently. Which is what we asked for. If it pisses some players off that it means new attitudes, expectations, and demands then just remember: it’s what we asked for.

I love Pioli's attitude and frankness about things

PIOLI: "As much as anything it’s about guys making themselves players. Tom Brady made himself a great player. We weren’t that smart. How smart could we have been? There was a guy we drafted in the fifth round before Brady that didn’t even make it through training camp. Tom Brady was one of the hardest workers as I’ve seen and Matt Cassel too. That wasn’t any stroke of genius by us. It’s not any set formula."

He works hard. Finds all the angles. Leaves nothing to chance.
That should be our mantra.

The Chiefs have their swagger back.

Haley and that attitude is part of that. So let’s not knock him yet. Would you rather have a coach that invokes visions of nashing of teeth and kicks to the ballsack or a coach whose players lost game after game and received pats on the back instead a punch to the jejunum.
