Trade down scenario

I know many of us agree that trading down with a pick in the first five slots is difficult at best, but here's a scenario I hadn't thought of via ESPN:

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcwest/0-3-1984/On-the-Clock--Kansas-City-Chiefs.html

The Chiefs would likely be happy to nab Curry even though they have added four linebackers this offseason. He is the best defensive player on the board and the Chiefs desperately need help in the front seven. Curry is considered one of the safest bets in the draft. He would make an instant impact in Kansas City. The other scenario: The Lions take Curry and Stafford falls to No. 3. This would put Kansas City in a position of strength. Several teams will likely consider moving up to draft Stafford.

Although I hadn't anticipated the aforementioned as a feasible option, I began wondering which teams might be interested in moving up to acquire him?

I did a little bit of research and came ot the conclusion that there are two teams that could possibly make a jump for the opportunity.

So let's look at who might want to shore up their QB situation:

Bengals: 32nd/Pts.  32nd/yards

   - The Bengals: Currently picking 6th in 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds respectively. Although Carson Palmer was called upon to carry the team with their running game ranked 29th, he's slowly becoming less and less a factor for the Bengals. Could there be a QBOF desire to replace Palmer if Stafford is on the board? Maybe. This might be a feasible trade option since jumping from the 6th to the 3rd spot isn't that big of a jump, if they want him bad enough.

Throw in the 6'6" Mario Urrutia, in his second season with the Bengals as a WR or possibly another veteran {insert name here} and Pioli might like the idea.

NY Jets: 9th/pts. 16th/yards

- Currently picking 17th. With the loss of Brett Favre and the fiasco with losing Chad Pennington, unless the Jets feel their 3 QB's on the roster Erik Ainge, Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff (who, who and who?) are going to be the Jets starter, they're going to want someone they can rely on from the QB position. They relied heavily in their QB position for years and if they think they can get by without a strong starter, it'll be a long season. Perhaps a trade and send a WR (they have 6) or a lineman our way might seal the deal.

Jerricho Cotchery might be a good addition to the swap or could Pioli make a move and get Alan Faneca with a swap and a later round pick?

There's still some options to trading out that I haven't mentioned, but the two teams above I feel are in dire need of a QB to actually start or shore up their offense.

Jets seem plausible

but knowning Sensi, they ain’t even close to being done with Palmer

by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 15, 2009 12:47 PM CDT reply actions

True...but his stats were horrible last year.

The only way I see it happenning is if they think they can sit Stafford and develop him a year out. 32nd in pts and yards is just horrific.

Dude

Palmer barely played last year. Why in the hell he didn’t get surgery is beyond me, but being last in points & yards I wouldn’t hang much on his neck

by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 15, 2009 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand that, but I'll also contend that considering that he delayed elbow sugery and let's not foget his knee surgery on 2006....it doesn't look good for him putting up numbers.

Still

we’re talking the Bungles here. The same team that has had trouble moving on from a trouble RECEIVER they drafted (even after being offered 2 1st’s), I doubt will they’ll be able to part so easy with a QB drafted. Especially one who was #1 overall

by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 15, 2009 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

And I'll disagree and say that jumping from the 6th pick to the 3rd pick wouldn't be a difficult scenario to envision

Having a healthy 3rd pick QB developing in case Palmer goes down again isn’t too bad of an insurance to have.
I never stipulated that palmer would be replaced during opening day, I’m saying they might want to trade up for a future starter in hand.

Not bad insurance

but damn costly. I personally have always liked liability over full coverage ; ^ )

Although

Rex Ryan seems perfectly content with a mediocre, game managing QB & just stacking his defense on Day 1

by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 15, 2009 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Really

it seems at this point the same case could be made for Sanchez. It’s rumored Seattle is interested in him and teams looking to leapfrog them could be possible trade partners.

by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 15, 2009 1:18 PM CDT reply actions

In that article

he also mentioned Denver didn’t he?

San Fran will also be another major player if this unlikely dream scenario comes about.

The Jets & Niners seem the most likely, the Jets seem like just a QB away from perenial playoffs, they can take care of other needs in later rounds. Singletary will want to make a statement with his new regime and get the QBOF.

Pull a "San Diego"

And draft Matt Stafford? Then we have the top rated QB as trade bait right in the midst of the hustle and trades that go on during the draft. Crazy, but who knows, it may be the best way to trade for more high round picks.

Not sure teams would offer much value

Agreed

Start playing that game and you’re more likely to get screwed in the deal. The Chiefs should either draft a player they want or trade the pick, but they shouldn’t draft a player with the idea that they’ll flip him for something better. Once they’ve picked him, they lose a ton of leverage in negotiations.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

by UCrawford on Apr 15, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

Pretty bad risk- I hope Seattle sends out signals that they are looking for QB then we have some leverage.

They're Picking Fourth

And they know we aren’t going to draft a QB. There’s no way Seattle will be a trade partner with us to move up one spot. San Francisco would be more likely…they need a QB and if Stafford goes #1 there’s a good chance that Seattle grabs Sanchez so they’d have an incentive to leapfrog the Seahawks to grab a QBOTF.

If Only

We could trade down with San Francisco…possibly get their first rounder, third rounder and WR Josh Morgan. that would be a sweet trade.

I was hoping that they’d consider Sanchez a worthwhile trade off. :)

I Do Think That Seattle Will Seriously Consider A QB, Though

Hasselbeck’s got back trouble and they were saying last year that they think it will be chronic…if they’re looking to replace him, now’s the time to do so, so I’ll bet that Sanchez will get serious consideration if Stafford’s not available.

Rumor is Washington is in love with Sanchez.

Snyder id one that will deal the future for what he wants.

by Helmets on Apr 15, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Seattle

might become a trade partner if they are serious about taking a QB if they find out we have interested trading partners that also want a QB. Things might get interesting depending on how bad a team wants a QB. So i wouldn’t put it out of the realm of possibility by saying there is no way Seattle will be a trade partner with us.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

by paratrooper on Apr 15, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Granted

But it’s an extreme longshot. With the shorter time available between picks, the Seahawks would have too little time to make a counter-offer unless they agreed to a contingency trade before then (i.e. which I can’t imagine the NFL would allow because it would be a nightmare if one of the parties decided to raise a stink). I won’t say that it’s impossible that the Seahawks would trade with us, but I will say it’s extremely improbable.

Sanchez

is getting a lot of attention and is even on top of some boards before Stafford. The Jets are serious about him, Seattle has talked about him, and even denver is high on him. The best senario for us would be Stafford taken first, leaving Sanchez. If the Jets or Denver or anyone wanting a QB think Seattle’s gonna take him, they’ll make a move on us. We hold the best position in this draft and you better believe Pioli will make the best of it.

by dj_hindle on Apr 15, 2009 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

even if the value wasn't per the chart

I could see the Chiefs taking a 2nd rd pick to move down a few spots, or a couple of 3/4 round picks or 2010 picks.

I think Pioli knows how to build a team, and would rather have several picks than one high one.

Trading down would be my strong preference, and I’d be willing to bet Pioli feels the same, and he’ll get creative if he has to!
