Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Sources close to the situation said Kansas City cut receiver Will Franklin on Monday because he didn't fit the new regime's system. Franklin was a fourth-round pick last year. He was the 105th player taken in 2008 and he is the highest player in the class to be cut to date.

Oakland and Kansas City evening notes - AFC West - ESPN

Yeah, because it's unusual to cut a 4th rounder after year one.

Doesn't fit the system?

That doesn’t even make sense. What about Franklin makes him “not fit the system”?

by Vince D on Apr 13, 2009 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

That's the Politically Correct statement.... no need to beat the man down since he was already cut.

There’s always something more to it, their just not going to tell us straight out the truth.

What really happened was Franklin is not really a WR, but a track star pretending to know how to run routes. That’s why Herm drafted him so high.

Opinions are like A--holes, everyones got one.

Bout damn time we got an answer!:)

I agree, 4.39 40 speed, what system does he not fit in?

Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!

by Eric Allen on Apr 13, 2009 9:55 PM CDT reply actions

Not Sure

But remember Haley had a couple of bigger receivers he was successful with (Boldin and Fitzgerald).

by Joel Thorman on Apr 13, 2009 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

so what system does Jeff Webb fit in

besides incompetence?

The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.

Ha

Webb is two inches taller and about ten pounds lighter. It’ll be interesting to see if Webb makes the team. Remember, we still have an entire training camp to go through.

by Joel Thorman on Apr 13, 2009 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Dude...

I still don’t believe Webb is 6’2…I have seen him up close too many times…

by woodman212 on Apr 13, 2009 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Breaston was about the same as Franklin?

Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!

by Eric Allen on Apr 13, 2009 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Breaston

age 25 6’ 189 pounds. Hmm. What the heck?

Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!

by Eric Allen on Apr 13, 2009 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I still think he did something

pissed off the powers that be somehow. I don’t think he makes it through waivers with 4.39 speed.

by TheQ on Apr 13, 2009 10:05 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

No its not unusual for a 4th round pick to be cut. What IS unusual is a 4th round pick being cut on a team with only one good receiver. If they’re hanging on to Devard Darling, I would think they would be willing to at least let Franklin go through training camp.

That leads me to believe that there must have been something. Maybe it was bad attitude, maybe they overheard him bad mouthing one of the bosses, who knows. But teams with a lack of talent at a position don’t typically just jetison guys for no reason.

by ChiefDJ on Apr 13, 2009 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

I think they are sending a message. By the time a few vets get traded or cut (if TG goes to Atlanta for instance) there will be no one who will buck the system or want out of town. They will have the attention of everyone on the roster. You want to be here, here is what you do…

by TheQ on Apr 13, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I could be wrong, but I think we are looking tooo much into this

Haley I’m sure has his bias and beliefs when it comes to what he is looking for at the WR position..

Could it be that he saw Franklin as the worst WR on the team..It’s possible I don’t know..I’m blown away by this as well..Really am..But I trust Pioli with the offense..

by CALIFAN1986 on Apr 14, 2009 3:03 AM CDT up reply actions

....why would you want him?

Seriously…He had the 40 time of a LB…he is shorter than Jeff Webb…anything?

by woodman212 on Apr 13, 2009 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions

No doubt

after looking at some of the wide receivers in this draft, Crabtree doesn’t look heads or tails better than some of these guys. He does have exceptional hands though. But I have taking a liking to the North Carolina duo, Tate and Nicks. Those guys have a ton of potential. Tate, due to injuries could probably be had later in the draft. But what do I know? Wide receivers are difficult to pick IMO.

by TheQ on Apr 13, 2009 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

It was a joke.

….that’s what the wink was for. My bad.

by JComp11 on Apr 13, 2009 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

oh, sorry mate...

Glad you aren’t drinking the koolaid

by woodman212 on Apr 13, 2009 11:15 PM CDT up reply actions

It's all good.

I’ve stuck to the OL kool aid!

by JComp11 on Apr 13, 2009 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

This doesn't make any sense

I’m not going to question a whole lot of Pioli’s decisions but this one is truly a head scratcher. Here’s a guy who’s only had one year in the NFL and they get rid of him. But they decide to keep Jeff Webb and Devard Darling? Darling has been in the league for 5 years now and he hasnt done jack shit. He gets a second chance yet Franklin gets cut. I don’t see the logic in this move at all.

That is all Scarlett Johansson, baby! --------------------------------------------->

by mistamic on Apr 13, 2009 10:46 PM CDT reply actions

AGREED

Not to mention you piss off a bunch of fans that saw this kid play at Mizzou and have been a fan. This move just makes no sense to me being before training camp has even started.

by cawksrawks on Apr 13, 2009 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah But these guys couldn't care less about pleasing the surrounding area

college fans..There trying to win..I think this signals that the chiefs are going after a WR pretty early..

I don’t know why everyone is soo down on crabtree..He was a god on here 3 months ago, now everyone acts like he’s the most overrated player in the first round of the draft..I’d be stoked with the pick but we’ll see what happens.

by CALIFAN1986 on Apr 14, 2009 3:07 AM CDT up reply actions

We Saw His Measurables

Finding out that the productive college receiver is a average-sized guy without speed (who just had surgery on his foot) is enough to sour a lot of opinions about him.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

by UCrawford on Apr 14, 2009 7:56 AM CDT up reply actions

This is stupid and makes no sense.

At least, that’s my initial reaction. We are still in the Honeymoon period, and everything, and if they say he doesn’t fit I trust that he doesn’t fit.

But I think he could have been really good.

This makes me sad, and depressed.

by rockchalk on Apr 14, 2009 2:03 AM CDT reply actions

No disrespect meant by this

but I thought I remembered something about Franklin having a learning disability – maybe he just couldn’t grab an entirely new system fast enough for Haley’s liking?

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.
