Lombardi: Chiefs' Gonzalez Empties Locker at Arrowhead
via a.espncdn.com
The rumors (and we stress rumors) of a Tony Gonzalez trade are gaining steam.
Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post appeared on the NFL Network today and said the chances of the Chiefs trading Tony Gonzalez are at 80-85%. He reported over the weekend that the Falcons were "seriously considering" giving up their second round pick (#55 overall) in order to acquire the future Hall of Fame tight end.
Lombardi also said that Gonzalez has cleared all of his personal items out of the Arrowhead complex.
Nothing is concrete or imminent at this point.
Of course, people do clean things. We could be getting jazzed over a player clearing out his locker out of simple cleanliness. Could Tony just be doing a little spring cleaning? It's probably the most logical conclusion we can reach right now.
Lombardi is a former personnel executive for the Raiders and Broncos so he has ties to the AFC West.
Stay tuned for more information...
Note: Bumped this post up to the top for the night. Unless anything else happens that is. It was originally posted about 5:15 today.

I love Tony, don’t get me wrong but I really don’t care what happens to him from now on. He is being a ore madonna and a distraction. Trade em for all he’s worth and draft his replacement. (Chase Coffman)

Chris suggested that one of the voluntary mini-camps were ending
So that’s why he cleared out his locker. But there’s a mandatory veteran mini-camp on April 17th so that seems somewhat unlikely.
Again…these are just rumors at this point. Anything that is a rumor will be clearly stated as that.
No joke
Stafford with the Lions, Franklin released, Tony G may be traded… pretty busy day.

I think he cleared it out since the renovations were going to start in the locker-room by the hardhats
That’s for those who still argue think TG will stick around when Pioli could care less about the Chiefs prior to ’09 and is looking out to win a Lombardi.

It's been fun
Watching the best TE to play football ever, and i really was hoping for him to end his playing day’s with us! I wish T.G nothing but the best, and i really hope he get’s that S.B ring! Look’s like i might be pullin for the Falcon’s next yr! Don’t get me wrong, im still a Chiefs fan, but the Falcon’s if they get T.G will go into the #4 slot on my list!

"All about business."
+1 (just about rec’d you) to that.
I’ve been a Chiefs fan for my entire life, and a huge chunk of that time has included having the greatest TE of all time. The sun is setting on the guy (not in a bad way), and for a team to be willing to give something—anything!—for him is great. We get a 2nd round pick back for him, which is something Pioli values, and we send him to a place he might be able to better end his career.
In no way do I feel that ATL is a Super Bowl-bound town. They’re probably closer to a Super Bowl than us, but Shaquille O’Neal is probably closer to the stratosphere than I am (no disrespect). If Tony desires to see the grass on the other side, let him.
I’ll still name my first son after him.

What do you know about Atlanta's chances?
Our did you just pull the opinion that one of the league’s most upstart young teams is no where close to winning the big one? Because I’ll venture to say it was straight from your ass. The Chiefs have a good young team but you went 2-14 and just got a system quarterback that replaces a qb in Thigpen that wasn’t even the real problem with the team. So even though you didn’t directly insult my team, putting us in the same general ballpark isn’t even a fair comparison. Good luck to your team, maybe you guys can make the kind of turnaround we did. It was improbable, but your division sucks so there is always a chance you can squeak in and make some noise. Moral of the story, don’t undercut a team just because you are upset about Tony G possibly leaving.

I know what flogger is saying though.
I think the addition of TG is just what they need to put them into serious contention. Atlanta has all of the pieces in place. Tony adds run blocking and incredible pass catching ability to an already dangerous offense. He will be able to create mismatches that will have opposing coaches pulling their hair out.
I don’t want Tony to go but, Atlanta is a good team for him to go to. They will have a real shot with his help.
I hope he doesnt get hurt playing on the turf. He is not really used to that. Every team in the west has natural grass.

TG apparently refused
to go to any team with turf the previous offseason, but he may be willing to bolt out of town regardless. Atlanta’s turf is very natural feeling and he perhaps would be willing to make the concession to come play for the Falcons. Our turf emulates real grass. Jamal Anderson’s injury in 2001 forced a change to this more forgiving surface. I hope that’s not a deal breaker for him this go round.

Maybe from the fact that ATL is one season removed from a stunning .250. Yes, 4-12 is much better than us, but I haven’t seen anyone anywhere consitering your team to be in the NFC elite.
Moral of the story, don’t undercut a team just because you are upset about Tony G possibly leaving.

Keep TG
Tony is a HOF that will get Matt Cassel out of trouble. He will be a safety valve. There will never be a TE as good as him. Thigpen would throw into triple coverage and TG would make the catch. 2d Round pick would help but dont do it to get rid of our most reliable offensive option. Cassel will struggle without a target. Bowe will drop balls. Cottam is unproven and has a history of injuries.
.
Nuts.
To be reasonable, a trade for TG would need to look something like this:
Chiefs send Tony Gonzalez to Falcons
Falcons send all future drafts picks and entire 53 man roster to Chiefs.
You don’t just deal away the best TE in history for an unknown quantity.
I've been saying
we need at least two picks. 3rd and a 4th would do it for me. or 2nd and a 6th.
I'd take a 2nd and a conditional
I’m sure the Falcons would gladly give up a first for a superbowl appearance
They’d gladly give up a second for an NFC championship appearance
They’d gladly give up a third for a divisional round appearance
They’d gladly give up a fourth for another playoff appearance
They’d gladly give up a second and fifth if TG makes MVP
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
I wouldn't go that far
They’re probably going to go to the playoffs regardless, and realize Tony G will go to the Pro Bowl regardless.
I’d say maybe a conditional 3rd or 4th rounder if they win the Super Bowl and Tony plays 85% of all snaps.
Thank God for you guys..I've been trying to preach about keeping Tony but everyone
is so bent on an unknown 2nd round pick..Theres no way in hell we make the play offs next year without Tony G..None

Good deal if....
If TG is traded the Chiefs better draft Crabtree (ideally a couple of spots down) to replace TG’s production. That is the only way I am cool with our best player leaving town.
I was just thinking about that.
I would say this definitely increases the chances of taking a big shot WR in the first rd. If they can pull this off AND trade down, Maybe they will score Maclin and then start working on beefing up the lines.

Sure do
No offense intended, I just dont buy the Falcons as legitimate contenders. The Cardinals were calling out their snap counts and I think exposed how weak of a team they were to be playing in the playoffs. They were certainly better than the Chiefs and its not that I don’t believe in Matt Ryan, its just I have uber confidence in Pioli’s ability to turn this team around into a contender in 1 to 2 seasons moreso than Dimitroff.
by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 13, 2009 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions
Not trying to start an argument here
But you are basing the fact that the team that won the NFC, beat the Falcons 30-24 (at their home) and called out their snap counts, therefore, the Falcons are not legitimate contenders? I think you will want to either take that back or rethink your stance on the Falcons. The weakness was the defense and the Cardinals came through with an incredible second half. You don’t win 11 games with a rookie quarterback, and have a dominant run game, to then drift off into obscurity the next year. I think this Falcon disrespect is purely born in the fact that Chief fans are upset over their fan favorite leaving and not what you actually believe. So you’d believe Pioli can turn around a team quicker than someone who has already done so? What are you smoking, because I want some of that good stuff!

I just want to discuss the merits of your arguments and those you support. Isn’t that what these blogs are all about? Instead of chirping about all the negativity that will surely ensue because no one from outside is capable of a rational discussion, let’s discuss. If you really think Tony Gonzalez is wrong to think that the Falcons don’t have much more of a chance of making a deep run into the playoffs, than I’d like to read something intelligent to back that up. Is it crazy for him and for folks like me to think that the Falcons have more potential in the next 2-3 years? Is the Chief o-line good enough to protect Cassell and return LJ to prominence? How bout that defense?
Don’t worry about the spelling and grammatical errors, unlike most trolls, I don’t harp on that stuff. We have some trolls over on our boards on all sports that think arguing those petty things discredits the arguments of the poster.
SuperStar Fred McGriff gives this post his "full endorsahment"!
by Molly Flogger on Apr 13, 2009 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Before the season started last year...
The Falcons were a rebuilding team with no QB to lead them and a RB that had never been the #1 guy. In addition, they had a pass rusher who’s tank was running in the second 1/2 of most games, and a group of receivers that had never made any real impact for the team.
In short, the Falcons were in a bad way. Then the draft happened and they added a rookie QB to the team that may or may not have been the answer.
Point is, if we had this conversation at the same time last year (pre draft) the Falcons would have have no more cred than the Chiefs do today. There is no point in arguing about which team was better last year, because the record speaks for itself. There really isn’t much point about which team will be better next year, because anything could happen in the draft, offseason, FA market etc..
For all you know Matt Ryan could tear an ACL/MCL on the first day of the offseason program and never play a snap all of 2008. I certainly don’t wish that on him, but you are on a Chiefs blog. Seriously, how much support for your argument do you think you will get?
The Powers Of Astute Observation Are Often Mistaken As Cynacism By Those That Do Not Posses Them -- G.B. Shaw
I'm not asking for support just an explanation
Of why Tony G would be crazy to think that the Falcons have a better chance to win that the Chiefs. Other than freak accidents, there isn’t really any argument against this. So my point is made I guess. It’s moot anyway, apparently Kansas City has rejected Atlanta’s offer of a 2nd round pick. Dumb on your part. Keeping a guy that doesn’t want to be there to lead in the locker room.

I was making my assessment based off my opinion that I don’t think Atlanta has a defense. It’s hard to win in this league, especially in the post-season, without a solid defense. Your offensive line was phenommenal last season but they’re not going to win games for you. Your team has certainly turned things around, like Miami, but neither are what I would consider contenders. So while my smoke is good you are the one I would call high for thinking your team (Atlanta Falcons) are Super Bowl contenders
by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 14, 2009 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions
Fair enough
Our defense is our weakest link and is a young one. Last year though, they were ball hawks in the clutch and won a few games for us that we probably shouldn’t. The D will be addressed through the draft this year and adding Mike Peterson to play the Will, should be a good enough D to easily win the NFC South.

Don't ask that. Don't even hint at it.
We wouldn’t want to insult the Falcons fans who frequent THIS blog.

Oh that
acerbic wit. Such a funny guy, bet your pet snake and your dr. pepper big slam get a big kick out of your knee slappers. But void of any substance, you are just wasting everyone’s time. So honestly, what about a revamped 11-5 team built with young stars and the acquisition of a pro-bowl tight end do you not feel is keeping them from being legitimate contenders? I don’t think Tony Gonzalez is crazy to think his chances for success are exponentially greater in Atlanta than KC.

TG is her favorite player,
She has a poster of him on her wall. She has had it since a tailgating with Trent function.
Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!
Get her a poster of Don Pioli
At least he’ll be a consistent fixture on the team. Lot’s going to change and this is just the beginning bro.

So we all think LJ is gone,
what does this say for Waters future, if this deal happens?
Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!
Just deal him

He's gone, yo
With all the reports I think the writing is in the sand. Leaving with Tony is the old era of the Chiefs, where I wish they would now deal away LJ & Waters too because this is now unquestionably Pioli’s team. He’s going to do a Parcells type purge of the roster and rid it of personnel from the previous regime. I welcome the change but at the same time feel disheartened because it spells the end for Chiefs I’ve come to love like Waters, LJ, & Hali.
by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 13, 2009 7:50 PM CDT reply actions
Shuffle is right.
This will make it official. The old Kansas City Chiefs will be dead and gone. It is time to usher in a new era of football.
One thing that I don’t care for (even though it is probably best) is the fact that our new leadership has no sentiment for what has been Chiefs football for a long time. They see it from a different perspective than we do as fans. I wish the best for Tony if this deal goes through. I will root for Atl because of Tony but, if we end up playing them…I hope we stomp their fucking guts out. Sorry, just bidness.

For reals
I hate the “newer/more recent is better” attitude, but my highlight film has many more TG moments than DT moments. And there was a hell of a lot of DT moments.

Get this over with already
I’m tired of Tony whining as a Chief. Let’s move on to a new team. Get the 2nd, we’ll make good use of it. Trade down, pick up another 2nd. Ditch LJ for a 5th or 6th. Hell send Dorsey & Waters packing if you have to, though I don’t necessarily want to see that happen. But if we could get a 3rd for Waters I’d be happy, or a late 1st for Dorsey I’d be happy. I’d rather have Haley’s & Pioli’s players than Carl’s & Herm’s!
Ditch LJ for a 5th or a 6th...Damn that's stupid
What are the chances of a 5th or 6th give us the output of a larry johnson for the next three years..Slim to none..That is almost as ridiculous as people clamoring for Brodie to compete for the qb spot..

No, at the beginning of last offseason he said he wanted improvement from 4-12...
Then after Carl he said he would talk to the new GM about it…
But Clark also said that he supported Herm through this youth phase....
and that he could see improvement even though it didn’t reflect in the Win/Lose column.
Clark also told the media that when he hired a new GM that he would have the final say during the firing or retaining of our beloved Herman.

exactly.
If TG is worth a 2nd, LJ sure as hell is. Anything else isn’t a net gain. Not net gain, not bidness.
P.S. I still don’t agree with the Tony trade. Its a respectful disagree where I hope I am wrong, but this just sums it up.
"Hey we’ve got our new, semi-proven franchise QB, so we should definitely give him Dewayne "Drop it when it counts" Bowe, a few horseshit FA’s and some draftees as receivers. But you know what would do wonders for this team? Another Bernard Pollard…"

If so
then we wont have to trade down but we still could 4 more pics that a be great. but just to get back in the 2nd round in we can take A.Curry with that 1st pick and in the 2nd round we go center we need that more then a RT in my eyes we can go RT in a later round
~YOU MAD CUZ YO TEAM NOT THE CHIEFS~
Why isn't Cleveland interested
They just sent Winslow to Tampa.
Their second would be a whole lot better than 55th.
Does Tony still have a trade clause?

How bout Philadelphia, Buffalo, NY Giants, and Baltimore
They are all projected to pick a TE in 1-2 rds
Buffalo 42nd pick, Cleveland 50th, Philly 52nd

Pakcage Waters & Gonzalez
for Peters & 2nd rounder. They can throw in Roscoe Parrish if they like

Sad day in KC if tony leaves..Seasons already over
O well I guess I’ll just jump on the never ending bandwagon for draft picks because its sooo much more fun to imagine what the chiefs could eventually be with young draft picks rather than watch a solid team play in 2009..Right Guys! Come on!……….

seems like everyone here should want Herm back
trade away good players for unproven draft picks, it did so good for us last year
by bringbacktheglory on Apr 13, 2009 10:30 PM CDT reply actions
I understand the intention of your statement, but
the only player of import we traded last year was Jared Allen. From that, we now have Branden Albert, Jamaal Charles, and DaJuan Morgan.
Tony, LJ, and Waters have each asked to be traded. We are not championing it for the sake of getting draft picks. They asked to be traded, and we, rightfully, are trying to make the best case for our loss of their talent via draft picks.
Tony, LJ, and Waters created the situation we are now discussing.
Furthermore, the Jared Allen situation last year was Carl’s fault, not Herm’s. So, the tangential argument should be to bring Carl back not Herm.
From any aspect, the GM and the players instigated the trade speculation, not the fans in this instance.

Herm or carl
Herm was the coach he should have known our defense would be bad without Allen. How many games would we have won with Allen on the the field. Will be saying the same thing if we get rid of TG
