Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

His handling of Waters created the impression of a young person on an immature power trip. General managers don’t win football games. Good football players and coaches do. You do whatever is necessary to retain the good ones, and you dump the Larry Johnsons of the world the first chance you get.

Didn't Realize This
If the Chiefs hold on to Johnson and he makes their season-opening roster, which would re-guarantee his contract

I would like to change my answer to “There is absolutely zero chance that Larry Johnson makes the Opening Day roster”. If the Chiefs can’t trade him after the draft, he’s gone…they’ll dump him.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

Also Didn't Realize That Waters Was His Own Agent

That casts a little light on why he flew to KC to talk to management instead of having his agent call…and makes it a little more understandable on Waters’ part (since any reasonable agent would be doing the same thing for his client).

Waters should hire Ari Gold as his agent.

I would love to see Ari negotiate a contract with Carl Peterson — pretty sure Ari would call Carl a “cunt muscle.”

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Yes the grievance only unguaranteed the contract.

I we release him we don’t pay him. Otherwise it is the same. The only way it increases his trade value is if we agree on conditional picks (which I think will happen). Something like a 3 or 4 if he makes the team. If you cut him you owe the chiefs no compensation. At least he knows that he now is easily released. It was much tougher to cut him when we had to pay him anyways.

Yes UC, I've been trying to convey that to the LJ supporters for the last 2 weeks that are arguing to retain him

Now way he’s on the roster “especially” since Goodell will probably give him a suspension since he plead guilty. So,anyone that thinks we’re going to give him $3.75Mil. and risk having him suspended after winning arbitration isn’t thinking straight.

Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."

"My job is not to collect talent, but to build a team. Individuals make the Pro Bowl. Teams win championships. That is our goal."—Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.

Speaking on behalf of the "supporters"

I don’t think it is the fact that we think he will be here…I am pretty sure he will be gone.
It is just that I think we would still like to see him on the roster. He is the best RB we have and we will not be able to replace him easily. If we draft a rookie, I doubt we will get anyone who is as good as he is. There is definitely nobody available in FA to replace him.
We have a lot of holes to fill in this draft and it would be much better if we did not have to address the RB position with a mid rd pick. I want to see us spend our third pick on a Center. I feel like it is the biggest need on our offense and could do a lot to improve our running game and keep Cassel safe.
Any later rd draft picks will be a serious downgrade in quality from our current RBs IMO.

LJ is the exact opposite of what Piloi is looking for in a player.

Carl Peterson should have been fired on general principle of the contract he gave LJ.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Actually, He Should Have Been Fired For The Contract He Gave Priest Holmes

That was an even worse deal than Johnson’s (although not by much).

Truth and uc you guys are correct

We are not giving a guy who doesnt want to be on this team and a guy who maybe charged suspenision more money does not make sense for the team when he has such a bad history and a bad attitude toward the chiefs and the atmostphere of kc

Is Whitlock still bitching about the Waters situation?

Whitlock’s routine gets so friggin’ old.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

by paratrooper on Apr 12, 2009 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Whitlock is a good writer but...

…sometimes he tries too hard to make controversy. Pioli and Haley made an example out of Waters that the Carl Peterson good ol’ boy network is gone. While Waters is a good player, he is certainly expendable. He will fall in line by training camp and be a solid player for the next few years. Either that or he will be good trade bait during the draft!

by jjbjhawk on Apr 12, 2009 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I would contend that Whitlock isn't even a very good writer.

The guys is supposed to be a sports columnist and he doesn’t write about anything except football and occasionally basketball. It turns out the KC area has a professional baseball team and 50% of the Star’s sports columnists has no idea how to write about it.

Seriously, how often does a Whitlock column have any real insight? Something you read and think to yourself, “That’s a good point. I never thought of that.”

He sucks.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

I'd trade LJ for a conditional at this point

in which if he doesn’t produce the team he’s traded to gets him for free like the Bennett trade. I’m just afraid if we cut him he’ll go to the Broncos and terrorize our team for 4 or 5 years

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

If LJ can atleast quit his bitching, then I really don't see the point in trading him

Whitlock is exagerating when he claims LJ has been doing a poor job running..
1. LJ was injured
2. Our line is TERRIBLE…or atleast thel ast two years it has been terrible
3. We switched to the spread

We’re already way under the cap..and LJ’s still a premiere back in this league..But we can’t expect the guy to make shit into chicken salad behind our terrible line..I think our line will be a decent line this year and larry is gonna rush for 1500 yards..

by CALIFAN1986 on Apr 12, 2009 6:59 PM CDT reply actions

Actually

As JHWK pointed out in his posts about Larry Johnson, it’s not the line…it’s him. He hasn’t been the same back since 2006, even taking the crappy line into account because he’s likely lost a step. And that’s not even taking his personal stupidities into account.

I think our line will be a decent line this year and larry is gonna rush for 1500 yards..

Our line might be decent, but Larry Johnson won’t be running behind it this year…the Chiefs got his guaranteed money negated in the grievance, and if they keep him into the season his money gets guaranteed again. He won’t be playing for the Kansas City Chiefs again.
