Chiefs Sign Former Dallas & Miami LB Zach Thomas

Apparently, Thomas and the blogfather in college had the same barber.

Thomas will be turning 36 this season and the Star thinks he's a likely starter at ILB.  Interesting move, certainly not getting us any younger, but seems to fit with the overall theme of getting versatile 'football' guys.

Chris and Prime are out of the office and the PARADE has some big boy work due Monday so we'll handle the late night Sat. emergency post.

H/T emo3131 in the FanShots (interesting handle Mr. mo3131)

P.S. Chris might be terrified to learn that the PARADE has discovered mainpaging, but we promise to only use it for good in emergency Pioli posts such as this...  don't be mad blogfather.

Gracious I don't know what to think of our draft anymore

one things for sure though. Any young linebacker would be lucky to play in KC right now. With Thomas and Vrabel as mentors you could pick up some pretty sly moves

ZOMG. Z Tizzle + PARADE on the main page. Chiefageddon. :)

Honestly, if this is real, I am floored.

Not that Z Tizzle doesn't still have some left in the tank, but really WTF?

Left field, meet Don Pioli.

Either way, good LB’s > Chiefs’ LB’s. Yay!

Pardon us sirs...

But we would never betray the blogfather’s trust if there was any doubt.

And yes DTR, if your question was is that really the PARADE straight mainpaging, it was indeed us. It shouldn’t be recurring anytime time soon, but we felt the need to take extreme editorial action for the good of the AP.

ALSO…via the KC STAR online – linked – top of the page, c’mon are we new at this? Even included the “(online)” distinction in case the Star people we’re trying to put the PARADE in the blogfather’s bad graces posting fake stories and whatnot.

It wasn't the PARADE, as it was the randomness of Zach Thomas.

Z Tizzle (I live in B-More, so the play on T Sizzle is natural), is the WTFOMGBBQ moment.

its pretty obvious wat pioli is doing..he is bringin in veterans to teach the young guys how to win and draftin talented younger players to learn under these guys..i beleive he is makin the right move

I agree, it is obvious.

But did anyone think Zach Thomas was even a target?

Honestly

i thought we would make more of a play for Seau than Thomas since he was a Pioli guy.

I didnt

i didnt even realize he was available. I dont know what to think, good or bad, I do kind of hope this means we will pass on Curry and take someone later to learn under them, but it doesnt look like it

Its the Patriot Way

Young players all over the defense but grizzled old veterans at linebacker where its more important to be smart than a good athlete.

by ChiefDJ on Apr 12, 2009 7:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Im a little perplexed myself.

Why release 35 year old Donnie Edwards, and then sign 36 year old Zach Thomas.
I don’t disagree with having a veteran on the team to be a teacher, but ???

Donnie had injury problems

Zach played all 16 games last year.

Well, we've rotated every guy on our team that can still walk....

to play MLB, and not one of them was worth a shit. So I guess grabing an ‘old guy’ cast off from another couple teams can’t be any worse.

Pioli is making a point

In order to win, a team needs leadership. Herman Edwards’ team lacked leadership. Guys like Vrabel and Thomas provide instant leadership on defense. Bobby Engram will be an example for the youngsters on offense.

by dorsey on Apr 11, 2009 10:08 PM CDT reply actions

I doubt it affects it at all

Just pushes Curry to the OLB maybe? This is very interesting. I know we need more leadership, but we will be lucky to get a season out of Thomas.

by TheQ on Apr 11, 2009 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I dont think Curry

would make a very good 3-4 OLB we should wait and pick one up later

by mgarc3000 on Apr 11, 2009 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

You may be right

but the guys in the know have projected him as both a OLB and a ILB. I personally would like him as an ILB too. But then why pick up Thomas, unless it is just for locker room leadership?

by TheQ on Apr 11, 2009 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Just wondering...

I always learn something every day, but…isn’t there 2 ILB in the 3-4 and 1 MLB in the 4-3? I was just wondering because that’s what it looks like to me when I watch the Patriot games going over Cassel footage on NFL Games Rewind. We can still pick up Curry and play him at both ILB and OLB and have two mentors for him to study off of in Vrabel (for OLB) and Thomas (a.k.a. T-Zizzle according to DTR) for the ILB and he should become a VERY versitile LB for our team. I’m not saying so much we should but just that I think that’s a good idea.

a 43 uses

Sam, Mike, Will linebackers.
a 34 uses Sam, Mike, WIll, Jack backers.
Penderghasts 43 under uses Sam, Mike, Will, Jack/Predator. The Predator is usually a pure pass rusher and the other 3 LB’s play much more classic 43 Sam, Mike, Will roles, even though there are 4 LB’s on the field.

not at all.

A 36 yr old MLB is not the future leader of the defense, and he’s not a multi year prospect. He barely qualifies as a band-aid at this point. But everyone else we have sucks (MLB), so maybe he can get on the field and suck a little less.

Zach can tackle

That is what we need! We need to stop the run. We need smart guys making smart moves on the field. I see Zach Thomas as a player/coach for our young guys..But his tackling is a definate plus! He had 94 tackles last season with the ’boys. Just in 2006 he had like 165 tackles…..nice.

I like Johnson

he is a solid player he has not had a ton of sack only had 1.5 last year . does not mean he could not get more … I like curry do not know why you do not want to draft him
I like Currys stats and attitude i have heard him in 3 interviews and he has always sounded like a team play he has good charactor … he was told he was to small out of high school and he went about proving them wrong by hitting the weights and WORKING hard. he did not Talk trash or sound off about his he just did it

I do not see as much down side to him

I've been reading the Jason Taylor comments

and it was one of the first things that came to mind when I read that Thomas signed. My original theory was that Pioli wouldn’t touch any Parcells rejects because Mr.Parcells practically has a alter dedicated to him in Pioli’s closet.

However Thomas was a cast off along with Jason Taylor. I don’t think we make a strong enough case as winners to attract Taylor but Zach Thomas may convince Taylor to a 1 year contract if Pioli is interested.

But do you think Taylor could bring the same positives to the team that Tayor can?

I am not sure Taylor was as much a leader as a good player. I have no idea what Taylor has left that would keep a rookie or second year player from learning faster by playing. I have no idea if I made my point clearly…lol

Not enough Chiefs and too many Indians

not too many aging vets though …we only have 53 spots

I'd take the whine if he performed like he used too.

But I’d still resent him.

Very true.

But if he performs, then he can sulk like Edgerrin while we go to the SB.

Holy crap!

I know I was a little “loose” last night, but how did I miss that?

That’s hilarious, Lanier.

How about a big AP genuflection to our PARADE?

The PARADE busted out some hardcore Chiefporn on a Saturday night in the stead of the Chief Brothers Grimm.

That was Matt Cassel-esque, yet more prodigious and cost AP more virgins. :)

Well worth the price and spectacular form for Der KOMMENTATOR.

107 posts, this is a strong gesture for a "Chiefs up all night" post

Similar to the deadspin “closers” or now DUANs? *We like Daulerio, but can’t always make time like we used to.

In milking our right time right place moment, we’ll put out the teaser that Primetime and us have been in the works on a new feature, provided we figure out the technical details.

It will be good

to see the name “Thomas” on the back of a defensive player’s jersey, esp. a linebacker…

F That

How often does a Linebacker come along that is worthy or even mentioned of being drafted in the top 5. I vote Curry. We got the pick, we have the need

by KChiefs58 on Apr 12, 2009 3:03 AM CDT reply actions

hell no

while i love curry and would be happy if we drafted him, the better move is still trading down. while i don’t think this signing changes anything, i think it helps solidify that as the better choice for our need of a top 5 LB has just significantly decreased.

by Leaf on Apr 12, 2009 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Must have trade partners

Who is anyone going to trade up for? There is not a team that is desperat for a player that they must trade up to the 3rd spot for. I do not see any team trading up higher than the 6th pick, we need to just focus on our spot because we are not trading out of it.

by tevans96 on Apr 12, 2009 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions

i didn't say we were

i just said it was the smarter choice. i still think we’ll draft D with our first pick and not OT so that’s why i stated my opinion that trading down would be the better of the two great choices. but since you mention being focused on our spot, i say why narrow ourselves. we already know that curry is a bad ass player. we also know that if we can’t trade down the best option is to draft him. even if we can draft down but we deside not to, we could draft him and it would still be a good pick. this is common knowledge. because he is a high vis player there is no end to information on this guy. we should focus every bit that we can to try and convice someone to trade up to us because we already know a great way to go if we can’t.

by Leaf on Apr 12, 2009 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions

i can not complain with this move.

I think they are mixing vets with young guys in a favorable way for our 3-4 future. This to me almost looks like 2 masters and two students…Vrable-Thomas, Johnson-Curry. Maybe i read into things wrong and this is a sign we are to try and trade down but with Curry also, we have a huge upgrade to the whole linebacking corp.

by xfatdannx on Apr 12, 2009 3:16 AM CDT reply actions

I completely agree...

I was thinking the exact same thing. Vrabel is an OLB and could mentor and teach DJ on playing the 3-4 OLB position. Thomas is an ILB and would teach Curry to be a leader and top performing 3-4 ILB. And both DJ and Aaron Curry are very talented palyers and if we can switch them around from inside to outside on different levels over the next couple years they could be dominant over every position in the LB core. DJ is strong willed like Curry and full of fire and would also do very well as an ILB, though he is built more as an OLB. Curry is built for both but his traits are more suited to the ILB position and with Vrabel and Thomas teaching at both positions and they way both DJ and Curry perform, there could be not stopping our LB’s. They’ll be in top form! GO CHIEFS!!!

There's no hope with dope...

CHIEFS UP ALL NIGHT!

I like the signing. I am excited about what he will bring to the team. He is one of the smartest players out there we just have to hope his ability holds up.

I am curious what number will be chosen…

So I wake up this morning....

And see text messages about the Chiefs signing Zach Thomas. I get worried that nothing is on the site only to find the PARADE does have Front Page abilities.

Nice work, PARADE (esp on the title, love that SEO!)

by Joel Thorman on Apr 12, 2009 6:46 AM CDT reply actions

It will be nice to have a guy on the team who can tackle.

This is a cool move. If Jason Taylor is willing to come over to KC, that would be a very nice short term fix for the Chiefs defense. JT can still get after the passer and might help us to bring a younger guy along. Of course we still need to get a young pass rusher.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Apr 12, 2009 8:30 AM CDT reply actions

Ummm, holy crap!?

Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!
