And with the #26 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the Baltimore Ravens Select...
![]() |
Wake Forest CB Alphonso Smith |
Ben S with the pick...
Acting in my second year as the GM for the Ravens, I feel as though they have bloomed.
That being said, I could not be happier with this pick. Ozzie Newsome has has drafted some of the best defensive talent in career that includes players like Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Haloti Ngata. Heck, the guy gave Priest Holmes his shot in the NFL :)
Alphonso Smith is a playmaker who loves to tackle but is hawk to the ball. He looks fluid in coverage, but is not afraid to get dirty and lay a big hit if possible. His forty isn't the greatest, but the guy plays a lot faster than that on the field. Another knock on him is that he is only 5'9'' but personally I believe his play accounts for small size.
I see Smith stepping in to a starting roll in the Ravens and have a classic "Raven Rookie" explosion out of him, muck like Haloti Ngata and Ray Lewis did. Just watching him makes me think of a typical Raven player, I can already imagine the Ed Reed lateral for a touchdown.
As for the Ravens outlook for the coming season, I believe that things are looking good. They have a new QB in Joe Flacco who looks like he's going to be pretty good. Willis McGahee is starting to have some injury problems, but ray rice looks like he was a great pickup in last years draft as well. The o-line is looking good with players like Jared Gaither and Ben Grubbs just coming in to their prime, and the Baltimore receiving corp is showing signs of hope. Possibly a break out year from Yamon Figurs? Personally, I don't see it, but it wouldn't be a bad thing.
As for the Baltimore D, I bet the Purple Haze (my friend has always called their defense that, and must admit that I agree they deserve a name as well, much like the "Monsters of the Midway") explode once again with draft surprise Alphonso Smith being a vital part. Ray Lewis is going to come back and preform, much like I see Tony G doing the same for us. They are both professional players and for some reason continue to produce despite getting older (you should fantasy draft both this year, IMO). The Ravens will be hardcore once again despite losing Rex Ryan and will field one of the best defenses in the NFL...again.
My prediction is an AFC loss to the Chiefs on Kansas City's win in the Super Bowl against the Atlanta Falcons. :)
After losing to the Chiefs, they call me up and give me a job.

Agreed
I don’t know a lot about Smith but if the Ravens GM picked Ryan Clady (who is awesome) 8th overall last year in the AP Mock Draft then he gets the benefit of the doubt.

Need Pick For The Ravens
They might be reaching a bit, but he’s rated close to this pick and Baltimore just let McAlister go (and their CB situation was abysmal last year when he was out).
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

i could maybe see
knoshown mereno or however you spell that, just add more offensive power to that team, but I dont disagree with this pick either…they need help at the CB position

They've Got Three Backs Already
Knowshon doesn’t make sense unless they get rid of McGahee…and even then they’ve already got Ray Rice (who’s pretty good).

That's what I figured as well.
Ray Rice seemed like he was more than able to get the job done last year so I think they needed to address the defense, especially since they lost both Rolle and McAlister. They could also go defensive end here, but I think that Smith seems like a perfect Raven so it’s hard not to pull the trigger on him.

I Think It's A Good Pick
They won’t overpay him by much and he addresses a need…he’s also not that much of a reach. Damn shame, because I was hoping he’d fall to the Lions (who still need DB help).

He would make a good Lion as well.
Makes me think of Dre Bly now that I think about it.

Bly Was Good In Detroit
Not so good in Denver…but then he was getting old.

I just figured
that with McGahee gettting older and his injuries that they might draft a RB, I really dont know anything about Ray Rice. good point then

Rice Was Productive Last Year
Here are his stats. He was a good back at Rutgers and he was a solid back in the three-back system they were running last year. He’s a bit on the smallish side, so being a primary is kind of a question with him, but he’s also got Le’Ron McClain there who’s used as a fullback/tailback, so that’s not really a problem.

Le'Ron McClain will be good as well.
Reminded me of Lorenzo Neal when he was coming out last year.

Faster Than Neal, Though
Even if they dump McGahee (which is possible) the Ravens will have a solid running game. I see them going defense with the loss of their two corners, though…their reserves last season couldn’t take up the slack.

Thumb's up for the Phonz
In their four years together, Smith probably made more big plays than Aaron Curry did. And Curry made a lot of big plays.

good pick in terms of need
I like this pick but what do you guys think of DJ Moore from Vanderbilt?

Wow, you all are CLUELESS!
As the Ravens blogger over at Baltimore Beatdown, I can tell you that there is NFW the Ravens take a CB, much less Alphonso Smith, unless one of either of Malcolm Jenkins or Vontae Davis is still there. Personally, I even passed over Smith in the second round of a Mock Draft! The Ravens signed Domonique Foxworth to start alongside Fabian washington, giving us two very fast corners, as well as signing Tennessee’s Chris Carr AND re-signed Samari Rolle. therefore this pick is whacked and those guys saying we should take a RB are just not real football guys. We need a wideout unless we trade for Boldin and if we do, we’ll need to just take the BPA. Either way, that’s not Alphonso Smith.
