Wasn't Barnes a part of that awful Jacksonville line last year?

Yes. He was the swinging door at LT.
Thats why they let him go.

He'd look a lot better on the right side
Actually, he has looked a lot better on the right side.
He’s young, probably not going to break the bank…a smart place to invest, and certainly an upgrade over McIntosh, its not really that close.
McIntosh may be able to slide inside to RG, and now we’re a C away from a much improved OL.
Plus, the guy is 26 years old. Likely the best football of his career will come during this contract. I’d love to see us grab him, but I’m not really confident, if for no other reason, I know of no connection between him and our staff, and that seems to be a prerec these days.

I can see that argument
If he is an upgrade over McIntosh, then we should do it. Although, I think McIntosh signed something like a 6 year deal so I don’t know what it would cost to get out before year 3.

I don't think you read my whole post
I wouldn’t cut Mc especially when we’re 57 mil under the cap. I’d first try him at RG, depends on the offense we’re going to run. If we’re going to pull the guards a lot, he can’t do it, if not, I imagine he’d be LARGE upgrade over our options at RG.
If he can’t play RG, then he’s your swing backup tackle, and thats that. D-Mc’s contract was 6 for 18 mil, if we wanted to cut him, with our room, we could easily, but I’d hold onto him…especially if he can start at RG. It would serve him well to not have to play in space as much….that seemed to be his problem.

First try him at RG...
I’d consider RG and RT to be big needs for us. I wonder if McIntosh was competent at RG if Herm and Co. would have tried him there. We didn’t have much if any depth at RT so I can see why McIntosh stayed there.

Here's his contract:
3/3/2007: Signed a six-year, $18 million contract. The deal includes $5 million guaranteed. 2009: $2.15 million, 2010: $2.4 million, 2011: $2.9 million, 2012: $3.65 million, 2013: Free Agent
At least thats what I found.
I don’t think they tried him at RG b/c they weren’t comfortable with anyone else at RT, and its a more important position.

I'm just curious about Barnes
I don’t know how well he played last year and I know that Jacksonville was ravaged with injuries along the line. Was he one of the few healthy guys on the line? And if he was healthy how well did he do?

ESPN's Expert take on Barnes:
Barnes has anchored the left side of the line for the past four years. He has excellent size for the position and is a fluid, easy mover who is an adequate knee-bender with excellent body control and balance. He has above-average, small-area quickness and comes off the ball with good pad level. He gets a good fit with his hands to control and steer opponents on by the hole. He has good lateral range in pass protection and can ride the rusher on by the pocket, but will let his weight get a bit high at times and is inconsistent when it comes to reacting or adjusting to counter moves. He does a good job of bringing his feet with him on drive blocks and he understands angles and blocking schemes. He can struggle on the second level when trying to block linebackers and adjusting in space. He could show more of a nasty temperament as he tries to finish his blocks off. He is quick to pick up unblocked opponents and is a quick decision maker. While he is not a dominating blocker, he does more than just hold his own.

Jacksonvilles line looked bad last year....
But that was not his fault…I can’t believe Jacksonville didnt try to re-sign him…
He would look great at RT…

McIntosh
is a tackle, not a Guard. He’s a good backup, poor starter
by KansasCityShuffle on Mar 9, 2009 5:41 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well....
The thing is Mac lacks good speed and mobility these days so he would be great at pass protecting at Guard where you work in confined areas but the problem would be if you try to get him as a pulling guard…Thats when you could have trouble…

Signing a capable tackle could mean a huge improvement in more than one are.
Draft a center and move Niswanger or McIntosh to RG and keep the other as a back up.

Apparently
The Bucs are interested as well.

As always, depends on the price..
I’ve been a big Barnes proponent :26 yo LT with upside. The fact that he refused the raiders and SF tells me two things:
1) He’s willing to play for a lousy team for the right price (go chiefs!)
2) that price may be at a premium
I don’t think its fair to say that he was responsible for Jacksonville OL woes. That line sucked because it was decimated by injuries and he started all 16 games. 2 big caveats:
1) He did give up 7.5 sacks (that’s 0.5 more than mackintosh):

2) may be some character issues:

Yep...I think the character
issue is what is hanging up a lot of teams on pursuing him. However, we should still bring him in for an evaluation at least.

I think specifically this is why he's not talking w/ Jax, and they aren't talking with him
It may affect other teams decisions on him, I don’t know, but it doesn’t rule him out IMO.
Also, as for the 7.5 sacks given up, Paxi, I think you’d agree that 7.5 sacks given up at LT (which put him 23rd at LT) would likely be improved if he moved to RT.
I don’t know what he’s going to cost, but it’ll be disappointing if he signs at a very reasonable rate (like Igor) and we don’t make a play for him, considering (like Igor) its such a position of need.
OK…I’m letting it go for awhile.

pass on khalif
As a chiefs fan living in Jacksonville i have had plenty of time to watch Khalif and i wouldnt want him on the chiefs line. He is a horrible left gurad that only got the beneit of playing so much because the jags invested so much into him as a first round pick. He has a poor attitude and does not perform on the field as much as he should for how talented he is
