Let me start by saying that I believe that our recent trade for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel for our 2nd rounder was a great trade and has potential to be one of the great steals in recent years in the NFL. If we can get a franchise quarterback for potentially 8-10 years (he will be 27 years old by the start of the season), for the cost of a 2nd than that is unbelievable. Whether he turns out to be boom or bust is yet to be determined, if he is a bust then we are only out one 2nd round pick...worth the risk IMO.
As you all probably know, in 2001 we traded our 1st round pick for Trent Green who was 31 years old at that time. He gave us five excellent years under center, and amassed 21,459 yards passing in his total of 6 years with the team. Anybody would agree that is a terrific number for a 5 year period.
While passing yards is not the only way to judge a quarterback, it is a very relevant one and leads me to my question...could Matt Cassel eclipse that mark for the Chiefs? Because of his age he could be around for longer than Trent, which is an advantage, but Cassel probably wont be privy to the level of offense in his time here as Green was.
