Sunday Open Thread
We have hit a serious lull in general NFL news over this weekend. Which makes sense, because for the most part the NFL deals in the 9 to 5, Monday through Friday world for business.
I'm still fighting a terrible cold right now so I'll do my best to get something posted later but I can't make any guarantees. When I'm sick is about the only time you'll see as few updates as there have been over the last few days.
Here's an open thread question for you.
Predict Matt Cassel's stats next year and your reaction to those stats. I believe I took this idea from Chiefs Planet but I can't remember right now. Cut and paste this list into your comment and add in your own numbers. For reference, here are Cassel's '08 stats.
Completions: >290
Attempts: <475
Yards: ~3,000
TD/INT: 25/10
Have at it. Enjoy your Sunday too.

Sadly, I actually applied a methodology to those numbers.
1) I assumed LJ is gone. We will likely rely on Smith, Charles, and RB X at RB, meaning less of a running game from the start of the season.
2) I used last year’s KC Offense as a base and factored in Haley’s pass happy approach.
2008 KC passing stats = Comps- 310 / Att- 541 / Yds- 3358
2008 AZ passing stats = Comps- 418 / Att- 630 / Yds- 4875
3) 2008 Tyler Thigpen passing stats = Comps- 230 / Att- 420 / Yds- 2608 / TD-INT- 18-12
Bones had 420 attempts despite not attempting a single pass in 2 games, 10 attempts in another, and only 11 attempts in yet another game.
4) With Cassel coming into what should be an even more pass oriented version of KC’s offense than last year, questionable running game, and having to adjust to new receivers, I assumed we would throw a lot of screens to the RB’s & WR’s, thus increasing his attempts.
I also assumed our D will be nearly as bad as last season, especially while transitioning to a 3-4…so we will need to pass a lot to come from behind in games this year.
5) 595 attempts in a season is 35 fewer than ARI last season and only 54 more than KC last season.
6) 3950 yds is only 592 yds more than KC last year, and a 925 yds fewer than ARI last season. I assumed our passing attack would be better this season (not a stretch), but not at the level of ARI, for obvious reasons. So, I skewed it lower than the median.
7) 357 comps is only a 60% completion rate. I decreased Cassel’s completion rate from last year, 63.4%, due to adjusting to our receivers, Bowe’s drops :), and new scheme.
8) 25 TD /18 INT. I just thought 25 TDs was plausible and increased his INTs to 18 due to factors listed above.
9) Looking at Comps- 357 / Att- 595 / Yds- 3950 / TD/INT- 25-18 considering everything statistically above, seemed reasonable.
10) I guessed.

Assuming we keep gonzalez
that seems about right. Without him, those numbers drop pretty drastically.

The one incomplete pass will be tipped an intercepted, just for the sake of making my stats realistic.
