(The Chiefs) also announced the signing of linebacker Darrell Robertson.

At 6-4, 246 pounds, Robertson was on the New England practice squad last year. He came into the NFL as a college free agent with Dallas in 2008 out of Georgia Tech, where he was recruited and played for Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. In the ‘08 pre-season with the Cowboys, he was credited with four tackles and one for minus yardage. He played two games last year in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos and had six tackles.

In 50 games at Tech, he had 108 tackles and 11.5 sacks.

You know what?

I think Pioli and Haley are teasing the media and the fans right before they drop the big one. Okay maybe not but I’m still hoping!

Matt Cassel

I think that counts as a “big” move……. I do hope they bring in a big name free agent on defense, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. I trust Pioli to bring in some lesser name guys who can play and begin to improve the horrific defense.

It's kind of funny...

…but I’m not going to complain about getting players from a team who’s been to four of the last eight Super Bowls. I know they’re not starters but still, no need to complain about the Chiefs getting players from a quality organization.

by jbj8609 on Mar 6, 2009 3:55 PM CST reply actions

Good point!

I guess if anything they will be able to help teach players the culture that Pioli is trying to establish. Still is hard to get excited for a guy that was playing in Canada and averaged 2 tackles in college.

by Nelly on Mar 6, 2009 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

The tackles statistics is skewed...

He PLAYED in 50 games, many times as a freshman (even Soph and Junior at some of the football factories) you “play” in a game but only get a few snaps. You also have to factor in him playing DE in college, not a position where success is measured in tackles. He had 33 tackles at 6.5 sacks his senior year, which is decent at DE. However he projected to most as an OLB in a 3-4 when he got to the nfl because of his weight.

by bigbe on Mar 11, 2009 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually...

He was on the practice squad, so he wasn’t really even on the roster. And as a frame of reference, We cut Maurice Price from our practice squad last year, and then the Pats picked him up, before eventually putting him on thier practice squad.

I’m not complaining about any one of these moves by themselves, but when it looks like Pioli is only looking for talent where he and Haley are comfortable, be it coaching or player talent…I don’t like it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still on board, I’d just like to bring in some guys that have zero connection to these two guys.

ya i guess thats better than getting

the az d cordinator or the d cordinator for the saint oh wait we did

These

actually are the type of signings I like. Young UDFA’s – low cost, low risk. Much better than aged veterans who regardless of their ‘upside’ have no future’s with the organization beyond a few seasons.

by KansasCityShuffle on Mar 6, 2009 4:16 PM CST reply actions

This is normal people

This is the time of year that teams load up on these guys. These are the guys that will be at OTAs and probably won’t make the roster. I think it is funny how signing these guys is pissing people off. It is part of the offseason and you go to camp with a shit ton of players that won’t sniff the regular season.

How is this pissing people off?

Where were they last year? These were essentially the exact same type of signings we made under Herm. I know people are wanting big names but as its been pointed out to excess here, that ain’t realistic

by KansasCityShuffle on Mar 6, 2009 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

Everytime we sign

one of these guys, people start getting upset that we aren’t making a splash in free agency.

Gents

You can be on board with someone, and still question a move they make, or moves they don’t make.

It’s interesting, it seems like some people feel like they have to be cheerleaders for some guys after they’ve decided they like them. Bill Belichek, best mind in football, right? Pretty much everyone would agree…he makes TONS of mistakes. It happens, sure, he makes less than others, but we’re not talking about Jesus, here. Pioli does not = Jesus, and no, that doesn’t mean I don’t like him, it means I’m realistic.

I’m not saying this is a bad signing at all, its zero risk, fine, no problem. While I’d like to see some guys that have a better chance of making the team come in, my issue here, really, is that Pioli and Haley seem to only be going after guys they are familiar with. I’d like them to turn over some rocks that aren’t in thier backyard.

Looks like Pioli has Herms philosophy...

Build through the draft…..who needs Free Agents? 2 wins are plenty enough per season.

Go Chiefs!!

by Matt_Grbac on Mar 6, 2009 4:39 PM CST reply actions

If 2 wins were good enough...

Why would Hunt do a complete overhaul in the front office? I believe somebody said on here very recently in a post, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

BUT

the Miami Dolphins were built in a year. And oh would you look at that! They WERE busy in FA too! Maybe Pioli was sick from school that day and missed that lesson

by AK_47 on Mar 6, 2009 4:47 PM CST reply actions

they made major

moves they have old dogs we are actually in a good position to get players that are young who are on the up and up where they actually took some players on the decline we have the upper hand if you ask me. we just need to make the moves on these guys.

Miami

They went from 32 in run defense in 07…to 10th in 08…..so it can be done…

Go Chiefs!!

How busy were they?

I know they signed like two players that played in free agency.

by cmpotter on Mar 6, 2009 5:24 PM CST up reply actions

They were busy but...

if you look at the same page for the Chiefs, they signed quite a few players last year. Some started and some didn’t. The Dolphins did however sign Pennington and Porter which turned out to be awesome moves.

AFC West Champs in 2009? Mayyybee.

by cmpotter on Mar 6, 2009 5:39 PM CST up reply actions

'07 Signing

Joey Porter was a Cam Cameron pickup, so that was 2007. They did get lucky with Pennington last year, though.

by NESilver on Mar 7, 2009 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

Untapped potential perhaps

maybe he will become something with an opportunity. It’s hard sometimes to break into certain teams’ lineups if they have established veterans like NE. However if he has that much talent someone would have kept him in the league.

yes

this guys gonna be a star

great link kcshuffle

I don’t think this is a poili or haley guy but a gailey guy. Good low risk roll of the dice he may turn into something special but if not we can let him go.

UDFA's rock

MoLegg was my man last year, Wesley Woodyard was killing it with the Donks, and can anybody say Bart Scottt?

by KansasCityShuffle on Mar 6, 2009 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

We should have never signed

Studebaker. Gillberry is actually a legitimate prospect. DE from the Giants? We’ll take all those we can get

by KansasCityShuffle on Mar 6, 2009 5:19 PM CST up reply actions

Connor Barth & Mike Cox

from last years UDFA. Still on team as far as I know

Go Chiefs!!

does anybody realize we still have sackintosh right now starting and rudy

and we have lj who blows and we have some line backers that might not fit our new system if their is a new system and we have no d coach wow we need to act quick

Wondering if...

he could also play some DE for 4-3 defense in NFL? That was his position in college…
