And with the #23 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the New England Patriots Select...

T1_beanie_medium

Ohio St. RB Chris "Beanie" Wells

connerman with the pick...

Before you cry foul, the bigger picture must be laid out. And it's easy to paint.

The Patriots have six first day picks (!) and, specifically, three second rounders coming up right after this pick. So while the collective brain trust online seems to point to some linebacking help - and certainly that's an obvious need for Bill Belichick's crew - there's an opportunity here that I can definitely see New England seizing.

Chris Wells.

If anyone looks the part of Adrian Peterson in this year's draft, it's Chris Wells. And while the Pats might have bigger needs elsewhere, they certainly can make up lost ground with so many picks on the way. Connor Barwin, Brian Cushing, Robert Ayers, Michael Johnson, Clay Matthews, James Laurinaitis, Larry English, Jarron Gilbert and Clint Sintim are all still on the board, so the Pats can afford to strike while the best running back in the draft is still available.

Sure, Belichick's offensive schemes make retread backs look great (Sammy Morris, anyone?). But it's clear Maroney wasn't the prime pick many thought he was and the Patriots continue to rely on older workhorses. It works, sure. But when an opportunity this perfect provides itself... well, this is why a team keeps so many draft picks handy to make sure it can maneuver as the draft falls and take advantage of what's there.

So if you're Bill Belichick and you can grab the top running back in the draft - one whose pure power and ability to break tackles can single-handedly change a game - and still hold five first day picks, you take that chance and you worry about bringing youth to the linebacking corps, defensive line and adding O-line depth later.

Previous pick: WR Hakeem Nicks

With six picks in the first three rounds (Rounds 1 and 2 are first day only now, right?), if I were New England, I would go Best Player Available. I really hate the Patriots getting such a good player with this pick, which means that it's probably a good one.

4 first day picks

6 in the top 100 I think, though. Round 3 isn’t first day anymore.

But I can see this pick even though they just spent a first rounder on Laurence Maroney 3 years ago.

If Wells Falls This Far

I think the Pats grab him immediately. Maroney looked promising to start out, but he’s been a bust who gives marginal production and can’t stay healthy. And the rest of their running back corps is extremely long in the tooth.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

They need to get younger at LB

Sure they’ll have more chances, but Matthews seems like a NE pick.

Cushing would have been a fine choice, too.

Don’t dislike this pick or anything, but I’ll be surprised if Wells goes ahead of Knowshon. We’ll see.

do you see that defender?

Man, that guy is about to bust his ass bigtime! That makes this look just that much scarier.
Damn, NE is in line to have one kick ass draft.

I hate this pick

with Brian Cushing, Darius Butler, Darry Beckwirth, Darnell Ellerebe, and Sean Smith still on the board the Patriots could have addressed more pressing needs. They still have Maroney, they just picked up Fred Taylor, and they showed the NFL last year that they can make it with scrap running backs.

the pick is more sexy than anything

Not my first choice...

But Laurence Maroney has not exactly been all that great with the Patriots either. The RB and DB spots are the spots that I have the biggest problems with the Patriots. Ellis Hobbs?

They have Brady back this year

Tom Brady spreads defenses out so much that he’d make Cedric Benson look good. When you have a QB that good with a short yardage reciever like Wes Welker, RB is never a pressing need because you can use the short passing game as a rushing attack. Primary need for the Patriots this season has got to be secondary, then LB, then O line depth, then RB’s

Not a big fan

of the pick with the needs the Pats have at LB and in the secondary….I think the Pats will look to address these two areas first and with Taylor there at RB I think the Pats are cool at that position….at least cool enough not to draft a RB in the 1st round

by KCchief5555 on Mar 30, 2009 3:49 PM CDT reply actions

The way this particular mock has gone, Wells was the best value on the board

With the players remaining, the Pats are almost certain to get one of: Clay Matthews, Connor Barwin, Larry English or Clint Sintim with the 34th overall. I agree with the pick.

by RedNose on Mar 30, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

With all their picks...

They will have plenty of time to address their other issues.

A comment about the picture, not the draft pick.

Is it just me, or does #5 look like a statue? It’s like he’s stuck in the ‘I’ma gonna tackle you!’ pose, and doesn’t even realize he’s just been stiff-armed and is on his way to the turf.

Seriously, look at the guy’s face, arms, and fists. He’s still got the look like he’s preparing for impact with Beanie, not with the green, green grass below.
