Veteran free agent linebacker Clark Haggans will visit with the Chiefs on Wednesday.
Haggans, 32, spent eight years with the Steelers and last year with Arizona, where he worked with Todd Haley and Clancy Pendergast. He had a career-high nine sacks for the Steelers in 2005.

Yeah i really don’t care about the connection. I think we should go after mike peterson from the jags, then get shaun rogers in a trade with LJ, and then get curry in the draft. Our defense will be twice as good.

I don’t want to be the mediocre team with a high powered offense and terrible defense that backs it’s way into the super bowl.

Instead
we can be a terrible team with a medium powered offense and a terrible defense that walks it’s way into last place in the division.
Just kidding. I agree with you, I just think we should give it at least a season before we judge these moves.

And they’re comfortable with these guys. It’s not like they’re going to sign Haggans to a 4 year deal. He could be a capable filler this season. I don’t see anyone else out there that’s head and shoulders better than him.

true, I would love Olshansky
but at linebacker, hes a decent pickup for the 3-4. We’re building a linebacker core. The LBs could look like Vrabel-Curry-DJ-Haggans next year. we cant fill every need by the draft. I think we take Curry high this year. Then next year bump Haggans out and plug in another high LB draft pick. Then 2 years from now send Vrabel packing and plug in the 4th and final piece.

I think you're right.
IF he can get out of the #3 pick and move down a few spots to pick up a 2nd rounder, he’ll do it in a heartbeat. And IF he can do that, I actually think he might move down again to pick up more picks. I have a feeling that draft day is going to be crazy, and very unpredictable. I’d love to have Curry, but I really think there’s a good chance we’ll move down — IF we can find someone to swap with.

I can’t think of a team who would trade us draft pick so high that it would be worth more to us than keeping Tony…thus, I think he will stay.

Tony stays
Tony was looking for the Chiefs to make changes which would make them a winner. The latest two additions from the Pats should go a long ways toward proving to him that they are on the right track.

Why would you bring in a new franchise quarterback and then ship off his best weapon? How is that a recipe for success?

I agree but according to him
hes only going to play for a couple more years and then hes going to join the golden girls cast . SOooo if i were him i would stay be a legend . I mean i know we all love the chiefs and so does he but i can tell you right now by the time we are ready to make a run he wont be around we still need some key pieces that guy wants to win a play off game atleast and he wants to atleast sniff the playoffs and if he could he wants to get a shot at the ring and we are not doing that until atleast 4 years . And i love the chiefs hope we do really well sure we will but super bowl is out of our reach within the time he has to play.

I think Pioli
Can make the argument to Tony that we’re going to compete for the division this year.
This is a division that was won by going 8-8 last year, and 8-8 or 9-7 may win it next year. Its too early to say now, but I think its realistic to think we can get close to that this season.
Then in ‘10, which he’s hinted will be his last season, we could be making a run…and at that point, if we’re say 11-5, and win a playoff game, he might be inclined to give it one more season and try to deliver that SB to the team he’s played his whole career in.
If he wants to be a legend, his best chance is to stay here, be a one franchise guy, and add to his TE records.

I agree with you i think pioli can talk him into staying but
at the same time if pioli says hey giants are knocking at our door and they are asking for you and they are giving their first round pick for you . He is out the door or even if the pats called said hello can we have tony ill give you back ur second round pick tony would be out of here.

i'm not so sure about that
i know pioli likes to trade for draft picks but in tony’s case it’s not practical. first off no team in their right mind would give a 1st rounder for him, he’s way too old and too expenssive. but the main reason i don’t see that happening is right now tony is too imvaulable to us so even a 1st rounder wouldn’t be enough to replace him. a top 10 wouldn’t be enough to replace what he does for us.
by Leaf on Mar 3, 2009 4:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

A top 10?
C’mon. He’s said he’s playing 2 more years, Pioli would take a 1st rounder for him and draft a player that’ll be with us for the long haul.
I appreciate his value tremendously, and overall, don’t want him dealt, but for a 1st, he’d be gone, Pioli wouldn’t bat an eyelash.
Sex is right, a late 1st rounder would plug Mack in our lineup at C for the next 10 years.

2 years is exactly my point.
lets say he gets injured next season. now you just wasted a first round pick for some one that is going to play for maybe one more year depending on the sevarity of the injury. i know toney isn’t as breakable as some members on our (no idea who that would be) but it’s not outside the relm of possiblity. now lets say he last for another 3 years even completely injury free. the guy isn’t cheep. so in the end are you willing to give away a first round pick, some one with many miles left on him, to drop a hefty pay check on a guy that may or may not be good for 3 years.

Then I realized how much money we had to spend, and am a little more open to it.
I think Taylor’s a guy with just one year left, while Lewis may have 3. So I’d lean towards Lewis, but the financial commitment will need to be greater. That said, we NEED to start having a financial commitment this offseason, so I don’t have a big issue with it.
This is of course, secondary to getting a legit 3-4 DE, which at this point is down to Igor, and really, no one else.

Haggans + Vrabel
would give us two 3-4 OLB’s who played in two different 3-4 systems for two very good 3-4 defenses (Pitt and NE)…nice tutors for Aaron Curry and DJ (who could be our eventual OLB’s)
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 3, 2009 1:55 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No one is saying this now
But I think Curry would end up being and ILB in a 3-4.
He was a bubble Sam 4-3 LB, which translates a lot better to ILB in a 3-4 than OLB.
I think he could probably play either, but he’s not an edge blitzing type of LB, not that he can’t do it, but its not his specialty.
This is ok, b/c we need LB’s across the board, but everyone should realize this when penciling in your 3-4 mock Chiefs defense.

If we are really moving to 3-4, then the Pat Thomases and Rocky Boiman’s become even more useless to us than they already were. Looking at these free agents coming in...
I’m wondering if Pioli and Haley’s initial assessment of the team is that there is some talent in a few of these younger guys (particularly on defense) and they just need to be surrounded by some vets who’ve played in some championship games to bring out the best in them?

He would be nice to have around. Anyone Piloi adds to this team will be an upgrade to what we had regardless of age.

Yep
Anyone Piloi adds to this team will be an upgrade to what we had regardless of age.
Pretty much. That’s why I look at the free agent and the Chiefs current player and decide which is the upgrade – isn’t that all that really matters?
by Joel Thorman on Mar 3, 2009 3:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
For sure
I am sure Piloi looks at it the same way. Ok we have this guy now and what if we signed that guy….He said himself he is not looking for individual talent. He wants to build a team. Just becaise someone he signs it not a pro bowler or young and pretty does not mean they wont fit the mold that Haley and Pioli are building.

I'm a huge Derrick Brooks fan
But from the looks of these vets that we’re bringing in on D, they are 3-4 guys, that will probably help mentor the kids as we transition to a new defense.
Brooks is a 4-3 guy…we’ll see. Would he be an improvement, yeah, but I’m guessing vets that we bring in will be those comfortable in the 3-4.

"Bah" On This Move
Haggans had one stinking sack last year and didn’t even get 20 tackles playing for a terrible defense. His sacks have declined every year since 2005 and his tackles have declined the last two years and he got hurt last year. This is a player getting close to the end of his career…and he hasn’t been particularly effective the last two years.
I’d rather the Chiefs gave the playing time to Boiman.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
by UCrawford on Mar 3, 2009 4:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Boiman??
Haggans was hurt last year, you have to keep that in mind.
I don’t think we’d be signing him to be a starter, more as a situational pass-rusher. He’d be another guy that could help us transition to a 3-4 in the same way Vrabel will. In fact, in another post thats what I put, I think these guys essentially combine to play one postion.
They play different positions, so we don’t really need to compare Boiman.
We have plenty of guys on the roster that will need to be purged before next season, and to do that, we’re going to have to get legit NFL bodies in there to fill those spots. Last years roster was ridiculous, with all the off the street guys making the minimum.

I Realize He Was Hurt
Inability to stay healthy is also often a factor of age. Do you think he’s going to become more resistant to injury the older he gets? Usually health issues start getting worse for football players in their 30s.
I don’t think we’d be signing him to be a starter, more as a situational pass-rusher.
Isn’t that why we just traded for Vrabel? What would be the point of having two aging situational pass-rushers in the lineup? Especially when Haggan’s sack numbers have been in decline every year since 2005?

Well
I answered one of the questions of your reply in what you were replying to. We wouldn’t necessarily have these two in the lineup at the same time, they’d rotate and combine as one position. Keeping your pass rushers fresh is key, the Giants have shown us this.
I do agree that the ability to stay healthy is a factor of age, but this was his first season with real issues in that regard. He had a LisFranc injury that put him on IR…since he’s not going to command big money, I really don’t see the downside. If we somehow fill up our roster with 3-4 LB’s to the point that he wouldn’t be worthwhile, we could dump him, but we’re still needing guys that know and can play this defense.
by kcsno56 on Mar 3, 2009 8:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Lisfranc Injuries Often Linger
They’re a potential career ender. And even before that his production was dropping off fast. Haggans is a player in quick decline…why do the Chiefs need him? Why not try and adapt one of the other young OLBs on the roster to the 3-4 to see what they’ve got, especially if they’re rotating with Vrabel anyway?
People keep harping on “experience” with Haggans, and most of the time when you hear a player’s experience being touted as his biggest strength it’s because he doesn’t have that much ability any more. And that appears to be the case with Haggans, who’s not going to be improving much if at all. I’m fine with a veteran holding down a position when that veteran is capable of producing, but when it’s a choice between a washed-up vet and a young player who may not be good, it’s better to go with youth unless they’re absolutely certain the young guys can’t play.

He'd be insurance in case the young guys can't play
He upgrades the roster, which again, isn’t that hard to do b/c our roster is filled with some pretty terrible guys.
Of course it all depends on what we’d be paying him and him passing a physical, again, we need NFL players on our roster, there are literally 10 guys today that have no business even in the league.
I’m not counting on anything spectacular, but more than Curtis Gatewood.

I'd Take Him Over Gilberry And Studebaker
Not Dacus…who showed some flashes of ability and might still get better as he’s 10 years younger than Haggans. Haggans, on the other hand is as good as he’s ever going to get and is as likely to get worse as stay the same.

I'll give anyone even money
That any one of these four won’t be on the roster when the season starts next year. You can take Dacus, I don’t think he makes the team.
But still not the point, if you’d take him over Gilberry and Studebaker, so then why not make the move, if for nothing else than the intangibles.
by kcsno56 on Mar 3, 2009 8:07 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Intangibles
I don’t think a guy who pulls down 19 tackles and one sack in 10 games (all played before he hurt his foot) offers a lot in the way of intangibles…especially when the defense he’s playing for isn’t very good (so he obviously wasn’t inspiring the Cards to overachieve on D).

By intangibles
I was more referring to things other than what he does on the field. Being a leader, helping young players to learn a new defense. We’ll need some of those, Vrabel’s a good start, but right now, he’s one of the only guys that knows the defense.
Haggans also played ST’s last year with the Cards before the Lisfranc.
And even though his season ended with Lisfranc, he was also hampered by a groin injury earlier in the year…not a positive, but may explain the lack of #’s.
I think he’ll sign for around a Mil…why not, is my main question?
by kcsno56 on Mar 3, 2009 10:46 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Because A Million Is Wasted Signing This Player
Granted it’s not a major thing because the Chiefs are loaded with cap space, but it’s still a roster spot and Haggans is the kind of vet the Chiefs shouldn’t be chasing…the ones who are pretty much finished. If they want vets at linebacker there’s Ray Lewis, or Mike Peterson, or Zach Thomas or Eric Barton, or Willie McGinest. All of these guys bring experience, several of them have played in a 3-4 and all of them were more productive than Clark Haggans.
And even though his season ended with Lisfranc, he was also hampered by a groin injury earlier in the year…not a positive, but may explain the lack of #’s.
This kind of goes to what I’m saying…problems staying healthy in conjunction with declining production over several seasons are signs of a player’s career coming to an end. And I don’t really buy the whole “he’s a coach on the field” angle either. The Chiefs will have a linebackers coach. They’ve already signed a guy to be the nominal player/coach (Vrabel). What they need are players who can produce, and that’s not Haggans.

I put exactly this in another thread
There are certainly other guys to go after, Haggans is by no means my first choice…although some of those you mentioned are: A. older than Haggans and B. haven’t played in a 3-4. In fact, Haggans might be younger than every guy you mentioned, I’d have to look.
I wouldn’t be ready to right a guy off when he’s just had one season of injuries…and its not like if we sign him, I’ll look at it as a big deal, he’d be a roll player, and I’d rather pay him a mil to be a roll player with his 3-4 background than Gilberry $400k to be a roll player.
I’d be happy to take a run at Ray Lewis. I also mentioned McGinist earlier, his production is tailing off. They do fit what Pioli’s been looking at, which is guy’s with experience in the 3-4. Barton would definitely fit inside, as would Zach Thomas, but Dallas wasn’t thrilled with him last season, if he’s happy potentially not playing every down, then sure. There is no reason to believe that by signing Haggans it makes us more or less likely to sign any of these other guys, they’re unrelated…especially all these ILB guy you mentioned.
Peterson…I doubt we look at him, I don’t think he’s ever played in a 3-4, and is percieved as having attitude issues, even if the issue was probably Del Rio.
No one should even mention the word ‘cap’ unless you are talking about getting to the cap floor. We’re not, and have not approached it in YEARS, and since these are likely to all be short term deals, we’re not talking about hamstringing future seasons.
And as far as ‘taking a roster spot’ our roster is terrible right now. We probably have more roster spots open than any team in the league, so that is no concern at all.
by kcsno56 on Mar 4, 2009 9:38 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I Realize That Most Of Those Guys Are The Same Age Or Older Than Haggans
I was saying that all of them have been more productive. Haggans seems to have aged a lot faster than those others and his production has, frankly, stunk for the last two years. If they’re going to grab a veteran, the Chiefs need to grab one whose production wasn’t in the toilet last season because although a decline should be expected from the previous year’s performance at least they’ll get some production out of him.
Case in point, the Chiefs grabbed Donnie Edwards coming off a pretty good season in San Diego in 2006. He posted a solid but unspectacular year for the Chiefs last year, then fell apart the second year here. Age eventually caught up with him, and when it happened, it happened fast…he went from Pro Bowl-type numbers to washed up within two seasons. Haggans hasn’t posted Pro Bowl-caliber numbers since 2005 (maybe 2006) and he’s coming off a season that was disastrous last year (19 tackles and one sack in 10 games). If they’re going to roll the dice with a vet, why not go with Zach Thomas (95 tackles) or Ray Lewis (over 100 tackles) or Eric Barton? Maybe those guys aren’t that good in two years, but they’re likely to be a lot better than Haggans will. Or why not go with Angelo Crowell (27 years old)? He might be switching schemes, but he has a lot more upside in the next two years than Haggans is going to have.
Right now, the Chiefs seem to have this worrying pattern of targeting players who the coaches are familiar with but who don’t seem to be that good at playing football. And they followed the same strategy with some of their coaching staff, frankly (Pendergast, Gibbs). It’s supposed to be a football team competing for a championship, not a landing spot for the buddies of the GM and head coach who lost their jobs.

I don't think we disagree that much
I agree…I’d be fine if we go after one of those guys. But those all would be ILB’s in a 3-4. It literally has nothing to do with signing Haggans.
Again, if you like Haggans over the scrubs at the bottom of our roster, than its a good move.
Haggans isn’t a big deal either way, he’s going to be cheap, I think we’re only spending so much time on it b/c we haven’t done anything else.
I’d really hope that this week we start going after some other guys, hopefully a little younger and more sought after. Olshansky, Kalif Barnes and sure Crowell would be at the top of my list.

I Think That's Right
Tough to discuss anything else when the Chiefs haven’t done much else except trade for Cassel and Vrabel. :)
And I don’t really like Haggans more than I like the scrubs we have at OLB. I just see it as the scrubs have more of a chance to be good than Haggans so I think it’s a waste to sign a guy who’s probably a special teamer at best…I’d rather they brought in another UDFA. My basic dislike of the “proven veteran” mentality that values players more for what they have achieved than for what they can achieve.
