Chiefs Set Private Workouts with LB Curry and DE Kruger
From the FanPosts. I dropped that FanShot back to the FanShot section, instead of the front page. -Chris
The Kansas City Chiefs have scheduled private workouts with two defensive players that they are looking to take coming Draft Day.
The first player is an obvious choice, LB Aaron Curry from Wake Forest. Curry is the best defensive player on the board and could fall to the Chiefs at #3 overall if the Lions pass him up. From NFL.com:
Curry has a private workout scheduled with the Chiefs on April 2-3, then an interview with them on April 14-15. The double-dipping comes after Kansas City scouted Curry at the combine in February and his pro day at Wake Forest earlier this week.
Kansas City has also sceduled a private workout with a lesser known prospect, DE Paul Kruger from Utah. Kruger is currently projected to be a second or third round pick. Kruger, 25, had 7.5 sacks for Utah last season and draws comparison from former Chief DE Jared Allen. From ESPN:
The junior defensive end from Utah is being closely examined by the Broncos and the Chiefs. Denver has already worked out Kruger and the Chiefs are set to work him out next week.
Kruger has been to Kansas City before. He spent his Mormon mission in KC from 2005-2006. This is what he had to say about the people in KC:
They were just down-to-earth, humble people. I also served right in the heart of Kansas City. So you were able to see a lot of different backgrounds and ethnicities. You’re out there serving people and seeing peoples’ lives change on your efforts.
While Kruger visited Kansas City, he became friends with Lynn Stiles, former Chiefs’ VP of football operations. Stiles had some good things to say about Kruger:
He was a very impressive young man, a big guy … and he had a strong testimony of the church. He’d come over for dinner, and we’d get into talking football.
So on a slow Friday afternoon in Chiefs Nation, what are your thoughts? Will Kruger be our replacement for Jared Allen in KC and will the Chiefs draft Curry if he falls to 3?

Kruger!
I hope he is our replacement. He looks like he would be the type that plays hard every down. I got a chance to watch him in one game this year, not sure who they played, and he did catch my eye. Not completely overpowering but he played hard the whole game. Then again we did draft Jared Allen as a longsnapper so he couldn’t have been to much of a beast in college.
We need a guy like this on our D line and if we got him and Curry I would be giddy like a school girl!
It is a new Era at Arrowhead. I do not yet know if it is one of greatness or one of ineptitude. I am excited to see which way it goes, and will support my team until the end, bitter or sweet!

I think he is an intriguing prospect
If the Chiefs were to draft Kruger with our 3rd round pick I would be all for it. I think he is a solid player with who carries himself well off the field.

Hey JayKC
I think I was editing the post when you were and we lost a sentence at the end. Can you add it in? We’ll stay out of the post while you edit.

I edited the note from PT
Is that what you meant?

Exactly!
I don’t know if everyone will agree with me but I am all for a mostly Defensive Draft! I know we have used a lot of picks on it with not much to show for it but I want the 90’s back. A crushing defense!

Oh I'm all for that.
But along with a killer D, we had an amazing running game. I don’t know if that is going to return but a strong and exciting O wouldn’t be bad either. So I think a few key moves on D and some strong attention to O and we’ll be off to a helluva year. I mean we need to protect this expensive investment we just made in Cassel.

draft both guys
Draft both of these guys (1, 3), get a C in the 4th and a RT in the 5th… then BPA 6 and 7…
that’s a damn good draft, and fills all the pressing needs…. IF they can’t trade down and do even better!

Sign me up for this.
Kruger may well slide as his workout numbers weren’t overwhelming. I watch a lot of Utah football, and he seems to be a good fit the for the new Chiefs. Versatile (was signed as a quarterback and made the move to DE, dropped into coverage quite a bit this year and had 7 passes defended), smart, athletic as hell (1:21 mark for int vs. BYU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1AewMuz41g 1:12 mark here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6Af5cZsT4M ) , high character and has an unstoppable motor. A very disruptive player (I’m pretty sure I’ve pulled this homer routine for him here before), he had 7.5 sacs and 16.5 tackles for loss. He could probably play OLB in the 3-4 or DE in the 4-3, which would make a lot of sense.
He may not ever be a Jared Allen (pretty high expectations there), but he would be a pretty good addition to the defense, IMO.
Breakdown on him:

I'm liking everything about this guy and your post
He has a serious motor and thats whats most important for a pass rusher IMO. Most NFL players are gifted in a lot of areas but just don’t have the heart. Kruger does and i hope we can get a Ute into our Chiefs tribe…(i know its lame)

I like this guy
I’d hope he could get out of the second but I doubt it. If he does you better believe Pioli pulls the trigger. A Mormon version of Jared Allen? Seems ideal seeing as Jared Allen skipped town because of his inability to stay sober

Sorry
it was out of character and some people made some controversial statements I figured it would be better to delete it than deal with people raging all over my post

yeah
they were all like, this isn’t football and it shouldn’t be up here… or what about me… can I have this position… why am I not on here. Rather than have my staff fight to the death I’d rather avoid the contention

I'd like both guys...
Draft Curry #3 and Kruger in the 3rd round, than a C in the 4th…but I want to see how Richardson does at RT so draft a WR in the 5th…or in the 4th and a C in the 5th. and then BPA in the 6th and 7th. stagdsp is pretty close to it, but my opinion is to try out Richardson first and see how he fares there.

Kruger, Curry
As far as Curry I really don’t want a non-pass rushing LB that high. I think they need to get in the middle second for a Kruger or Connor Barwin.

FrankPitts,
I agree with you about Curry. I’m not sold on him at #3. I hope we can trade down and get some extra picks. I do like Kruger as a OLB. Great size, passion, intelligence and character.

How about English from Northern Illinois?
He seems to fit the hybrid DE/OLB pretty well and has Green Bay licking their chops for him. Where do you see him fall in the draft?

English
If I couldn’t get Everette Brown I’d love to have him from 10 to 20 in the first…a trade down?
by FrankPitts on Mar 27, 2009 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
English
I have read some really good things on him, and unless we trade down with PHI or DEN, I doubt he is going to be there in the 2nd (unless we finagle a high 2nd rd’r), assuming Pioli figures out a way to get a 2nd rd or two. I would love to get E Brown and ReyRey in 1st through trade down with DEN, and then a RT & C in 2nd/3rd rds, a RG in 4th, and we are in a much better place going into the season.
Preview: I have a sneaking suspicion we are going to get Crabtree though after trading down to 2nd half of top 10 picks. I wouldn’t disagree with that either, as he and Curry seem to be game-changers.

If he is anything like Jared Allen
I say take him……i sure wish Jared Allen was still a Chief

The best part about this whole deal
is that if the Chiefs do sign Kruger Carl Peterson won’t be around to totally alienate a devout Mormon by throwing a tantrum and dropping the “f” bomb multiple times on the kid during contract negotiation like he did with (Mormon) John Tait.
