Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

And with the #19 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the Tampa Bay Bucs Select...

Jerryperia_medium

                             'Ole Miss DT Peria Jerry

madtheory with the pick...

I was split in making this decision because the Bucs don’t have a QB but I and other Bucs fans here in Tampa as well as on Bucem.com, part the SBNation family, believe that Josh Freeman was a reach. Besides he isn’t NFL ready and would need 2-3 years to develop and with all of the preseason ranking next year’s draft will be QB heavy and that’s not counting the dark horse guys that come out of nowhere.

That left DT, DE, CB and WR being the most pressing needs of the Bucs. WR was eliminated immediately b/c as some may argue QBs more often than not can make an average WR look good to great and not so much the other way around besides that the Bucs already have Winslow(acquired from the Browns) Mark Clayton and Antonio Bryant who came alive last year. I next eliminated CB because the Bucs drafted Aqib Talib in the 1st round last year and drafting CB two year in a round seemed a bit of a reach except for maybe the Lions picking multiple WRs in the 1st round year after year and being that both Vontae Davis and Malcolm Jenkins were already gone (thanks to cmpotter and Chiefsdude, insert sarcasm) the next available was CB Alphonso Smith, meh.

DT and DE kinda works hand in hand for me, if you have really good DEs that can rush the passer and not be a liability in the run game your DTs usually get more favorable match-ups, but with who’s left research indicated that they were mostly pass rushing specialists which wouldn’t help against the likes of Carolina  (Williams/Stewart) Atl Turner/Norwood) or even to a lesser extent NO (Thomas/Bush). DT were then really only way to go because good DT can demand double teams freeing both DEs and LBs to make plays in both running and passing plays and let’s not forget they’ve been trying find a dominant DT since Warren Sapp left.

Bio: Quick, active three-technique tackle. ... Good height and adequate girth inside. ... Very quick off the snap, able to beat the down block by tackles or penetrate to force the quarterback to rush his decision. ... Gets his hands inside guards' jerseys to push the pocket. ... Chases down field on plays away from him, and works hard to make a tackle when the ball is in his area. ... Uses his hands well to defeat cut blocks inside. ... Handles double-teams pretty well when playing the nose considering his height, and is able to get off the double to get to the ball. ... Emerged as the unquestioned leader of the Ole Miss defensive line. ... Dominant week at the Senior Bowl.

Previous pick: QB Josh Freeman

I have to admit I didn't know much about Peria Jerry before this but I like madtheory's reasoning for taking a defensive player here for the Bucs.

I didn't have DT as a major priority for the Bucs

I didn’t think they would spend a 1st rounder on one but you’ve convinced. Very nicely done.

The Guys Over At Buc' Em

Were apparently pretty high on this guy if he fell to them. I’m assuming they’ll be running a 4-3 next season.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

Seems like he kinda came out of nowhere

I remember seeing him as a 2nd rounder a few months ago.

yeah

i actually camped out on their site for a few days to help with my decision, it came down to Freeman, Maybin, Peria or best available CB. Then after both of my choices for CB were taken and only Alphonso Smith was left I started going in another direction.
On Bucem alot of posters there said that Smith would’ve been a good pick up and of the line that we often “coverage sack” but then thought about bad decision/throws made by qb under pressure usually result in interception and sometimes pick 6 so that influenced the pick as well.
Then I is considered Maybin but most of what I read had had as pass rushing specialist and IMHO, I would draft a guy in the first specifically as a pass rushing specialists.
Then Freeman, honestly I wouldn’t of picked him b/c I just don’t see what’s so special about him to warrant a 1st rounder. He just seemed to gain “top tier” status b/c of lack of a good qb class and I thought that if he came out next year he’d be like Nate Davis where only one team showed @ his Pro Day if that.
And the rest is explained in my post…

I'd be fine with 9-7 or 10-6 and competiting for the divsion title

I Think It Was A Good Selection

If Tampa is running a 4-3 next season, Maybin didn’t make sense…he’s linebacker size and (as you noted) more of a pass-rush specialist. Jerry seems to be a good fit for their scheme. So would Robert Ayers from Tennessee (although I think he was probably a reach at this point in the draft).

Doesnt

it look like the Olineman in the far back for LSU is laughing

by DT58forever on Mar 26, 2009 10:33 AM CDT reply actions

Disagree

Robert Ayers is still on the board and he’ll be a stellar end in the 4-3. Defensive ends are harder to find than Defensive Tackles, it just makes more sense in this situation

actually I thought

about Ayers as well but on I believe either mockingthedraft or cbssports or somewhere they had him as an underachiever starting only in this year when he had the talent to have been starting sooner.
I don’t know exactly how to format this but this came directly from NFL.com
“Stepped up his play significantly as a senior and evaluators will ponder whether he was a one-year wonder motivated by the big NFL payday.”
