And with the #18 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the Chicago Bears Select...

Kansas St. QB Josh Freeman |
Holmeslice with the pick...
The popular opinion surrounding the Bears is that they will go WR, OL, or DE with their first pick. Anything is possible, but they did go OL last year, and even with the retirement of Tait they don't want to reach too badly on need with Oher, A. Smith, Monroe, J. Smith off the board already. And what have the Bears been (in)famous for when it comes to the Wide Receiver position? Not having one, or having one excel when he gets away from the Bears. Well, Crabtree is long gone, and the other top guys are Maclin and Harvin. They are quick, game breakers listed right around 6 foot 200 lbs, just like Devin Hester. Darrius Heyward-Bey (DHB) remains, and surely many fans who started paying attention around the time of the combine will be clamoring for him. DHB could be an absolute stud in the NFL, but in several prospect reports he is labeled as a 'boom or bust' type, comparable to Ashley Lelie, someone who is inconsistent and somewhat of a workout warrior.
The Bears haven't had that all-star WR because, well, look at their QB's of the recent past: Griese, Grossman, Orton, Chad Hutchison, Craig Krenzel, Jonathan Quinn, Kordell Stewart, Chris Chandler, Cade McKnown.. Alright, I'm going to stop there. No ridiculously good receivers, no ABOVE average QBS either. Enter Josh Freeman out of Kansas State. Ask the scouts about him, and most of them would become so excited that they would hesitate to stand up for a few minutes. He is a "more intelligent JaMarcus Russell," some scouts say. Would this be a reach? Some people say he is a high second rounder, but many mocks and scouts think he will wind up in Tampa Bay who is picking right after the Bears. The guy stands at 6' 6" and weighs around 250 lbs, and is said to be very coachable. His primary mistakes were fumbles and poor decision making, which are the most easily corrected part of a QB's game. Freeman has an arm not unlike Joe Flacco, and many comparisons have been drawn. His accuracy is best on short throws and he often struggles with the longer ones, but that opens up the possibility of turning him into a "game manager" type like Flacco with the Ravens. To slightly one up Flacco, Freeman has scrambling ability and is used to playing behind a porous offensive line at KSU. If the Bears struggle to replace Tait, at least Freeman will be able to run around better than Orton could.
Da Bears could count on their crushing defense and bursts on special teams to keep eeking out wins and hope to make the playoffs. In fact, that's probably pretty likely because it worked in the past and they may be trying to recreate that. But it isn't likely to endure, and a quarterback like Kyle Orton is not the guy they need. Orton is consistently mediocre, a guy who matches TD passes with INTs, who struggles with accuracy, and who doesn't put a team on his back and will them to anything. Is Freeman that guy? Could be, and if I were GM Jerry Angelo, I would be more excited about finding a top notch coach for Freeman and getting him ready to go for 2010. Lovie Smith could likely solidify his job with the Bears for a few more years as they continue to win with defense and finally develop an above average quarterback to create a balanced contender. There is always a risk going for a high round QB, and Freeman is no different. I believe it will all be on him and his ability to dig down and learn for him to be at all successful in the NFL. The Bears are notoriously 'cheap' and grabbing a QB at the 18 slot is a lot more affordable than jumping into the top ten to do it. Josh Freeman is a guy who has a chance to be a top 15 starter in the NFL and every single weakness he possesses is something that could be corrected with excellent coaching and his willingness to succeed.

When I first saw the pick my immediate thought was "Reach!" but I read Holmeslice's arguments and I think this is a decent pick. I still can't shake the Andre Woodson comparison out of my head though.

Tampa Bucs here
thank you for selecting Josh Freeman, honestly no sarcasm. While doing research for my pick I’ve been looking over the Bucs roster and @ QB specifically and honestly they really dont have one so my somewhat obvious pick would’ve been Josh Freeman. Then I started reading more and more on Freeman and everything I found from nfl.com to bucem.com kept saying that he needed to couple of years to develop and I know that the Bucs have a new regime but didnt think they could honestly mold a qb that isnt qb ready I mean look @ their past qbs, yeah yeah new regime but still…
stay tuned for my pick and I’ll explain why I went another way but again thank you

I'd be fine with 9-7 or 10-6 and competiting for the divsion title

Yeah
I saw a lot of mocks with the Bucs going Freeman, thought this would shake that up a bit. .. But to the “reach” crowd, how is it a reach if the Bucs are strongly thought to pick Freeman?

Nah
I could see this happening.
Jerry Angelo needs to ask himself this….is Kyle Orton really going to be a Super Bowl QB?

I agree that Chi--town needs a QB
But if Stafford and Sanchez are gone I think they wait till a later round for a guy like Rhett Bomar.

What kind of a name is that
anyway? Sounds terrible. He should change it, QB’s need a power name, like Max Armstrong, John Dongswinger, you know, something that says “Hey, I’m your new quarterback. Put me in coach. I’ll throw the rock 70 yards with pinpoint accuracy and you’ll know my name is the Lord when I strike my vengeance upon thee.”
My crystal ball says Jay Cutler cries himself to sleep every night.

I disagreed with the pick
Not that I think the Bears won’t take Freeman, I don’t think they SHOULD take Freeman. The best camparison of Freeman to a current NFL player is probably Jamarcus Russell. There’s no reason to think he’ll do any better than Jamarcus Russell, so that would make him a poor man’s Russell. Which is pretty damn poor.
They should go Eben Britton or Hakim Nicks in the 1st Round, Rhett Bomar in the 2nd round.

I honestly had them going WR or maybe OL in the 1st

Ask a Bears fan about Angelo and most of them will tell you he will find a way to flub a first or second round pick. That played into this decision. But I think the converse, they go QB early and O-line in the 2nd.

hahahahha your kidding right???????
ask any bears fan and the last thing they’ll say is JA is looking for a franchise QB. O-line in the second? so we wait for the 3rd round or later to fill are most glaring need WR!?!?!?!?!??!?!?

but not the mental. Russell development issues have revolved around his mentality.

And Freeman's Pro Career Is Officially Screwed
Chicago is where QBs go to die. Seriously…their career passing leader was Sid Luckman, who played back in the era where I’m not actually sure they had a forward pass (less than 15,000 yards passing for his Bears career). The best QBs they’ve had since then were Jim McMahon, who was decent but not particularly great, and Jim Harbaugh, who had his best years once he left Chicago.
They simply can’t develop good young QBs…and that’s been going on for longer than any of us have probably been alive.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

I Agree With The Pick, Though
Kyle Orton is not the answer in Chicago, and Grossman is barely worth keeping on the roster. They’ll grab Freeman if he’s available.

Greetings from WCG!
When I saw this pick, I just about fell out of my chair. Wow. If the Bears were to make this pick, with all of our glaring needs… lord I can’t even find the words to say. There is no way possible (imo) that we don’t go OT or WR in the first round. Period.
You are all correct about Orton not being the long-term, franchise answer at QB. But, he showed last year that he is developing into a respectible enough QB to hold down the job for 2-3 more seasons. Before his ankle injury, he was very solid. I’m not an Orton fan by any stretch, but I don’t think we go QB in the first round of the draft either.
But, if we do draft Freeman, you wanna trade him straight-up for Cassell? :)
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious. (Vince Lombardi)

Problem With That
Is that there aren’t any offensive tackles available at this pick who aren’t a serious reach. But I could definitely see a case for Hakeem Nicks out of North Carolina.

Nicks is OK for the Bears...
…but I think that a Tackle is more pressing for them. I’d go with William Beatty out of CT for them. Big and fast kid. He had a better 40 than the top 5 OT’s in the draft.
Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."
"My job is not to collect talent, but to build a team. Individuals make the Pro Bowl. Teams win championships. That is our goal."—Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.

Disagree
Ebon Britton makes a lot more sense here. Kyle Orton can spot start until next years draft class of QB’s. They just lost John Tait to retirement and they have an injured second year RT to take his place, definitely not ideal. Although Britton isn’t a top 5 tackle but this is the 18th pick.
You could even argue Robert Ayers here he’s going to be a stud in a 4-3 and Chicago runs one of the best 4-3’s in the business. Just not Josh Freeman, not only is it a reach it’s a major waste of a pick with Chicago in a position of decline
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

Banking on Freeman shooting up like Flacco
It’s very possible that a late 1st round guy/2nd rounder will shoot up when teams realize this may be their best/only shot at a legit QB for the entire draft. Look at this on Flacco, from APRIL 26th last year, right before the draft:
Flacco has been projected to go anywhere from late in the first round Saturday to early second round. Speculation has had the likes of the Packers (No. 30 overall), or Dolphins, Falcons, Ravens and Chiefs in the second round selecting him.

I know it’s not the likely or obvious pick- But I think there is a chance the Bears look in this direction. In reality if Sanchez goes right before them I think they will look elsewhere, sort of like us potentially waiting on Brady Quinn a few years back.

Plus
Angelo did say that they were bringing in help at QB this offseason. As far as I know they haven’t brought anyone in during free agency, so the draft is where they’d go.

This article has some endorsements
and questions about Freeman which I thought were interesting. Those close to him think (or want to think) he’s more Roethlisberger than Jamarcus Russel.

Bears fan here.
Absolutely will not happen. JA and Lovie need to win THIS YEAR to keep their jobs, and this guy wouldn’t start this year if the team were winning…
There are a lot of value picks still on the board of people who would help the bears this year, including the best safeties in the draft. The bears are running a cover 2 with bad safeties, and that will get you KILLED… safety would be where they would go looking at this board, IMHO.
Nothing against the QB you picked, the just won’t draft him.
JA would trade out of that spot IMHO.
