There are a lot of differences between Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel and Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell and it's not just the fact that one was the 1st overall selection in the draft and the other was the 230th overall selection.
Let's take a look at these two quotes. First, from Raiders head coach Tom Cable on Russell:
"If he can accept the responsibility of being an NFL quarterback, I think that's working more, working harder, working longer than everybody else, accepting the responsibility that his teammates look to him as the face of the organization, that he has to go above and beyond almost on a daily basis, I think that comes with that position."
Now from Chiefs head coach Todd Haley on Cassel:
"This Matt Cassel feels and acts a lot the same way [as Kurt Warner]. He is football 24/7 to the point where I’ve had to pull back the reins on him a couple of times and say, ‘Listen, Matt. These next couple of months are about getting in shape and getting your body ready for the season. There’s time enough for football.’"
One quarterback held out until September his rookie season. The other quarterback waited patiently behind one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game.
One reportedly showed up to camp out of shape last season. The other came prepared to play despite not starting a game in nine years.
That's the difference between JaMarcus Russell and Matt Cassel.
