The Difference Between the Chiefs' Cassel and Raiders' Russell

Cassel_medium Jamarcus-russell_medium

There are a lot of differences between Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel and Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell and it's not just the fact that one was the 1st overall selection in the draft and the other was the 230th overall selection.

Let's take a look at these two quotes. First, from Raiders head coach Tom Cable on Russell:

"If he can accept the responsibility of being an NFL quarterback, I think that's working more, working harder, working longer than everybody else, accepting the responsibility that his teammates look to him as the face of the organization, that he has to go above and beyond almost on a daily basis, I think that comes with that position."

Now from Chiefs head coach Todd Haley on Cassel:

"This Matt Cassel feels and acts a lot the same way [as Kurt Warner]. He is football 24/7 to the point where I’ve had to pull back the reins on him a couple of times and say, ‘Listen, Matt. These next couple of months are about getting in shape and getting your body ready for the season. There’s time enough for football.’"

One quarterback held out until September his rookie season.  The other quarterback waited patiently behind one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game.

One reportedly showed up to camp out of shape last season. The other came prepared to play despite not starting a game in nine years.

That's the difference between JaMarcus Russell and Matt Cassel.

biggest diff is

cassel balls russel does not he sucks and russel only throws like 10 times a game .cassel is trying to perfom better every week and get better where the raiders have trainning wheel for russel like some sort of crutch let the guy play if you hold him back you will never know what he can do. raiders just have no clue.

Good analysis.

Personally, I thought it was going to be that one sucks and the other probably doesn’t. Nice to see you back the statement up with quotes, though. :-)

Great Point

I have always claimed that one should prefer good hard working players than extremely talented and gifted but lazy. Russell never dreamed of being a great quarterback. He dreamed of the money that would come. Once he got the money – that was it. Why work? Not till the contract year comes up…

Was anybody else waiting for Cable to finish the conditional phrase he started with "If he can accept the responsibility…

I kept waiting for a ‘then’ followed by a conclusion…instead he just spouted nonsense.
I guess that’s fitting for a Raiders’ coach…especially one who thought faking a FG on 4th and 10 would be a good idea

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

I'd like to hear the question.

I mean, if it was something along the lines of “Is there any way that you can imagine that Jamarcus Russell won’t suck?” or “Is there anything that JaMarcus Russell can do to justify his salary?” then I’d say his answer makes sense.

by JacinB on Mar 25, 2009 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

After having a night to sleep on it ...

If either of those were the question, the simpler answer would be ‘No.’

Russell is no bust.

Why is he a bust? He has only played two seasons. Only one as the starter and he did a decent job. 2423yrds and 13td 8int. In his last 3 games he was 2-1 with 6td 2int. You cant label him a bust. He is still learning. He has no Tom Brady to mentor him….not a fair comparison.

Go Chiefs!!

You cant compare Cassel to Russell....

They are two totally different guys with totally different backgrounds. I dont want Russell but he is not a bust. It makes no sense to label him that. Put any of those guys you listed on the Raiders and see how well they do. Hell, what if the Raiders drafted Matt Cassel….is the still the player he is today? No Way! Its all about the team and system they run. The Raiders have no weapons for Russell. Its way too early to put a label on him!

r u serious...

If you are calling Tom Brady “the fly” then yes he did. Matt Cassel had ’05, ’06, and ’07 seasons to learn from Tom Brady while he was standing on the sidelines. He was able to learn everything he could possibly need to know before taking over at QB. Not saying anyone could do it, but Matt Cassel wasnt exactly thrown to the wolves here. He was pretty much baby fed until the Patriots had to push him out of the nest. Russell was able to learn for 3/4 of a season…under who? Right! You probably dont know. So its not fair! Not fair at all.

Go Chiefs!!

by Matt_Grbac on Mar 25, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he actually was any qb that is a back up is thrown to the wolves

hence thats why you are a back up. you have to be ready when nature calls. even cassel him self said he had to learn the system week by week and get into the groove to know the plays is one thing to actually pull them off in a game is way different its game speed cassel the last time he seen game speed was in high school. and that aint exaclty nfl speed. Russel has a run game he can lean on and a pretty decent d he is the one holding them back from being a decent team. i dont see payton manning or big ben or tony romo learning from the best they just are players that work hard we can probably both admit russell is not a gym rat the guy is always over weight never comes to camp in shape he is not trying to master his craft there are players who want to win and there are players who just rather be talking to jacob the jewler. russell is talking to jacob the jewler and they probably are in a three way conversation with raji right now hahah

To be fair, how about we put up the entire quote??
Q: Your impressions on JaMarcus Russell at this point?

Cable: If he can accept the responsibility of being an NFL quarterback, I think that’s working more, working harder, working longer than everybody else, accepting the
responsibility that his teammates look to him as the face of the organization, that he has to go above and beyond almost on a daily basis, I think that comes with that position, whether that’s right or wrong, that’s what it is, if he can accept that and become that, he’ll be fine. He’ll be great, I think. Has he done that? I think during the last six weeks he started to, during the season. I think thus far in the offseason he’s been around more than ever. He was never around like this on his own, just watching tape, studying, so that’s a step in the right direction. I think he has to embrace that, though, for him to be what he should be.

Q: What kind of person is he? Does he want to be good?

Cable: Oh yeah. He’s very driven. I think he’s a very passionate guy. He’s certainly very motivated to not be a failure, to not be the kid from Mobile that couldn’t get it
done, all the hoopla, all the this and that. He doesn’t want to be that. He wants to be the guy. And he’s very driven.

Cable was mentioning what it takes to be a great QB, not what Russell lacks as a QB. He says he’s been working harder than ever and that he’s extremely motivated. You are right though, it sounds a lot worse for the Raiders when taken out of context.

by Pop N' Locktapus on Mar 25, 2009 4:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

dude just explain why this guy is out of shape every training camp

of course the coach is going to give rave reviews especially a coach that is trying to hold on to a job. he is not going to bash the guy. And if he is so driven how about he go to the coaches and say i want to throw more than 10 times a game i want to do more roll outs he is a big boy he can pick up yards .

I can see passion in the legs of a jeff garcia diving for first downs or a steve young running with no helmet . or even a tom brady who knows exactly how to bring his team back to win the game in every situation .

i just dont see it in russell . hey maybe he will change . so far i dont see a gutsy guy who is in shape or a workaholic in the film room just not seeing it with his play on sunday.

Maybe you should understand

That our Quarterback was never out of shape, those were all media mistakes ,at official weigh in’s he was exactly were he should be.Also, maybe the reason you don’t see Jamarcus wining games in every situation is because this was his rookie year , I know none of those QB’s that you mentioned did that in there rookie year.I don’t know why you guys are so exited about Cassel he played on a team that was 11-5 not 2-14 also he had other players to help him out ,not like now where he doesn’t have shit to work with.

How can one team be so dysfunctional? It’s amazing. If the Raider Nation had any brains they’d have been calling for that Guido of an owner’s head a long time ago.

Huh? Why does it matter if he’s played his entire career (2 years) with one team, especially if last year was his rookie year? How can you call Cassel a bust when he hasn’t even take a snap yet for the Chiefs? Do the Radiers have a franchise time machine that also doubles as Al’s overhead projector??

I'm Responding The Same Way

Most of the Chief fans are responding to Russell. How can you call Russell a bust when he played better than an QB the last six games of the season.
What I don’t get is why you guys allow Poili so much freedom that he can go grab his former players. Cassel is not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. He will have to learn the system there. Your whole offense does actually. And work ethic, it is a good thing, but don’t say Russell doesn’t have it. Russell does want to be the best QB he can. He just needs some weapons and an O-line on offense.
I mean come on, he won 5 games last year and ended the year beating a Texans team who just beat the Titans and the Bucs, who were on the verge of making the playoffs. That is heavy competition and you know it. And what team did the Chiefs beat? Umm..Broncos and Us. I’ll be the first to admit we weren’t a good competition and the Donkeys were even more sorry for allowing the Chargers into the playoffs. So, all you Russell haters, you can’t talk until you can prove Cassell can play with your offense.

What I don’t get is why you guys allow Poili so much freedom that he can go grab his former players.

What I don’t get is why you guys allow Al Davis to continually run your franchise into the ground by overpaying for substandard and mediocre players and firing coaches who can’t win with them.

What I don’t get is why you guys allow Poili so much freedom that he can go grab his former players.

Yeah, we “allow” our GM to go out and get players who work hard and have proven success on the field and in the locker room as leaders. Really? That’s his job. Is he not supposed to make the team better?? What do you think Pioli SHOULD be doing?

When Pioli starts making moves like the Raiders front office, with the lack of recent success, allowing a culture to thrive where the team has brawls on airplanes, 1st round picks holding out the majority of their first year (making their second year thier “rookie” year), sweet overhead projector press confrences to call out an ousted head coach, then yeah, you might have something. But until then, I think we’ll allow Pioli to make the choices he thinks are best for the team.

And you can’t talk until Russell actually puts up an entire season worth of numbers, not just 6 weeks, one being against the “heavy” Houston Texans.

The Chiefs have something the Raiders, not to mention the rest of the AFC West (Broncos=Cutler; Chargers=AJ Smtih admitting he’s done a lousy job) haven’t had for quite awhile (besides a young owner, young GM, and a soon to be state-of-the-art stadium)…we have valid reasons to hope.

Ok, also look at this seasons off-season. We addressed our big need at the OL position by grabbing Khalif Barnes and Eric Pears and trading for Satele. You guys, just grabbed garbage from the Patriots for your high picks. You guys are doing stuff we did when we were “stupid”.Cassel is a back-up QB who blew up for one year. Where is the big time Glenn Dorsey? He didn’t even help your run game last year. Great pick up.

You sir, are correct. Glenn Dorsey didn’t help our run game. Why is that? Because he never stepped on the field with the offense. Why is that? Because Glenn Dorsey is a DT. That means “Defensive Tackle”. That means he plays defense, not offense, hence the reason he didn’t help the running game.

You guys are doing stuff we did when we were "stupid".

Sorry, until it’s proven otherwise, you’re still “stupid” (see the point you made above).

Cassel is a back-up QB who blew up for one year.

Russell is a number one pick who posted QB ratings of 55.9 and 77.1…the Raiders would LOVE for him to “blow up” instead of just imploding.

For a back-up who “blew-up”, Cassell has sure caused a lot of damage to the Broncos…they were willing to deal a Pro Bowl QB for him…I don’t think anyone would want Russell (other than being a weight to make sure the bench doesn’t blow away with all the hot air Al Davis and the fans produce).

If he can accept the responsibility of being an NFL quarterback, I think that’s working more, working harder, working longer than everybody else, accepting the
responsibility that his teammates look to him as the face of the organization, that he has to go above and beyond almost on a daily basis, I think that comes with that position, whether that’s right or wrong, that’s what it is, if he can accept that and become that, he’ll be fine. He’ll be great, I think.

That’s an awful lot of “if’s” for the former overall number 1 pick…shouldn’t that have been explored BEFORE he was drafted? If he wants to be as good as you say he does, there wouldn’t be any “if’s”. He would just be doing it. The fact that your head coach had to make that statement should make you suspect. Right now, Russell is a bust.

Vrabel, another dorky pick, will be with you guys for one year and then retire. GREAT PICK UP.

How do you know he’s going to retire after one year? Glad to know the guy who thought Dorsey was an offensive player has an insight to Mike Vrabel and the inner workings of the KC Chiefs, especially since the media can’t crack them. Vrabel was brought in to be a leader and a teacher. When building a team (keyword being TEAM), that matters. But of course, the Raiders have nothing like that and while Al is in charge, never will.

by thejesuslizard on Mar 26, 2009 3:05 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You are picking on a guy

who’s first language may not be English and you know what he meant by “run game”. In case you don’t, he meant that your run defense was terrible and that at least so far, Dorsey is nothing special, did nothing to improve your run defense. If you need a reminder, I’ll draw your attention to week 2 when Darren McFadden ran through, over and around your defense, including Dorsey.

I also would like you to identify one thing this off season that Al and the Raiders have done that is not “building a team”.

I don’t know why you are bashing on the Raiders when your team has done nothing itself but draft in the top ten, just like the Raiders. We are both rebuilding and we will see when they meet on the field again then we can revisit this discussion again and see who indeed has “built a team”.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

And glen dorsey dont worry about him hes not a bust he did as well as warren sapp in his first year and look how he turned out im not worried about glen at all . We are the joke of the league?

Then what does that make the Chiefs? And, you shouldn’t talk about Super Bowls. You guys last won a Super Bowl January 1970 and haven’t even been back to one since. And no, I don’t trust you.

yes you guys are the jokes of the league

when ever there is a troubled player or a player who has lost value what is the first team you think of the raiders .They are the home of garbage players and a garbage system. And lets not talk about champions here the only reason you guy even made the super bowl was off bogus plays that the rule book had to be updated . And you had john madden who clearly was a hall of famer . And ill give you a break al davis at that time was on the peak of his game somewhere along the line he lost it and now is just clinging on the a dream that dont exist and you guys are just in a tailspin until he and his family dies off which wont be in your generation. so while you guys are going down the chiefs are on the up and up.

What?

Really? Really….come on, this is classic. Has the seventh seal been broken?

So, a Raiders fan comes to a Chiefs board, makes comments about how this is “the dumbest post he’s ever seen”, response is given, a back and forth takes place, and now we’re “picking on the guy”? Really? Raider Nation can dish and swear, but obviously can’t take it.

Don’t make excuses for someone. When you post, you have the ability to think about what you want to say, then preview it, if you don’t like it, change it…and no, I can’t read that cat’s mind…if he wanted to say run defense, then that’s what you say. It’s not my place to worry about such things on a football message board.

You don’t know why we bash? We’re fans of the Kansas City Chiefs. Are we supposed to coo about how wonderful the Raiders are? Are we supposed to agree when someone says our QB is a flash-in-the-pan and our highly touted first year GM is doing a poor job? We aren’t allowed to post fan thoughts in our fan boards lest we offend Oakland? Is that what the NFL has become? Well, I can’t speak for anyone else, but I offer my deepest apologies if I have offended any Raiders fans…spike wearing, dish-it-out, can’t take it, battery throwing, Raiders fans…oh, and so no one is confused, English is my first language and I’m being sarcastic (just in case someone needs to know).

We’ve done nothing? What the hell have you done??

Personally, I haven’t done anything. I don’t play for the Chiefs, I don’t work for the Chiefs. But, ownership has done a lot.

But, unfortunately, living in the past ruins the present and dooms the future. You can throw all you want about Super Bowls, AFC Championship games, poor seasons, picking in the top ten (which by the way in 20 years [including this season] the Chiefs have picked in the top ten 5 times, the Raiders have picked in the top ten 8 times, a lot of Cornerbacks, I must say, odd…). What have “we” done…well, you’re right, 1 Superbowl…which the Chief’s owner named…and you can’t deny this. Without the Chiefs, there wouldn’t be a Raiders franchise. Without Lamar Hunt, Al Davis wouldn’t have those nifty jogging suits and matching walkers. The NFL wouldn’t be what it is today and Raiders fans couldn’t spend their time posting on a Chiefs board.

Raider Tradition is an oxymoron like Yankee Pride. Made up to placate a fan base (current Raider tradition being a revolving door of head coaches, many after one or two seasons, is that not part of the tradition?…Yankee Pride being having the biggest checkbook, what’s the pride in that?) duped into thinking they’re part of something great, yet ignore MAJOR flaws and questionable (at best) leadership (which brings me to my next point).

The Chiefs and Raiders had more than one thing in common (besides playing in the AFC West and hate of the Denver Broncos). They both had outdated leadership that couldn’t get with the times and refused to change their ways. With the death of Lamar Hunt (RIP), the Chief’s quasi new owner (Lamar’s son Clark) took it upon himself to change the tide. The GM is gone, head coach purged, front office culture is completely revamped, and with an amazing stadium upgrade, it’s a new world.

If all you want to do is look behind you, in the rearview mirror called the past, the way Al your driver has done, then you’re going to wreck…royally. And you can’t deny the fact that the franchise has. The past two seaons, the Chiefs have been a major heap. But our new driver is Scott “The Don” Pioli, with a wheelman history, and he knows the modern route to championships.

let me get this straight

you’re saying your QB is better because he isn’t a big, tall strong guy like Russell? That’s crap. Cassel did play in NE with a top-flight offense with a truly fantastic O-Line, now he comes to KC where there’s only two quality receivers (Bowe and Gonzales. you could argue Kolby Smith) and a shaky O-Line at best. not to mention a very disgruntled RB. Cassel was good last year because he was surrounded with great weapons and had plenty of protection. This is not KC.

As for Russell, I’ll admit he had a rough year. But once all the pieces were put in place last year (especially when henderson was made starter) he became a solid QB with a better QB rating than almost every QB in the league in the last 3 weeks. I know that’s the end of the year, but he played a good Houston team, which was fighting for its first winning record, and Tampa Bay, which was fighting for the playoffs. With what should be a much improved O-Line, I think Russell will be even better.

face it KC, the Raiders are getting better and you aren’t. I know anything can happen in the NFL and nothing’s certain, but I can guarantee that Oakland will have a better record than KC and beat them twice.

I am no doubt a chiefs hater. But to make this comparison is just this side of crazy. Cassel played good in a system and russell hasn’t even had a chance to play in a good system. Theres no doubt cassel makes you better. But what is the real agenda of the cheifs fan, because it certainly has nothing to do with winning championships. It sounds to me like the same old mantra of the Denver Bronco fan, or the Charger fan……..As long as we beat the Raiders…….That makes you no better than any of the other fans in the afc west. As for this comparison, only time will tell. Russell so far looks like he is trying to find his way, Cassel is a proven “back-up”. When one of these guys does something meaningful then you can make all the comparisons you want, until then, stop hating!

Ok, then lets

You keep talking about this great “system” that Cassel played in last year. Do you realize that this system and the amazing O-Line that keeps getting used as a reason why Cassel was so good actually gave up 47 sacks, MOST IN THE NFL. The kid was getting rocked and he kept getting up. O-Line had nothing to do with his success last year. In comparison, Russell was sacked 31 times. So technically, Cassel got sacked once a game more than the Raiders QB. In the sense of protecting the QB, the Raiders had a much better (as were the Chiefs who only gave up 26 sacks, given it was a shortened season for Thigpen and he is a mobile QB) O-Line.

Follow this link for the numbers:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/statistics?stat=pass&sort=sack&league=nfl&season=2&year=2008

Ok

You are right the Pats did give up most of the sacks and i have to admit that Cassel is a good QB that will improve but, You can’t compare to Russell he had basically no Go-to WR and a Defense that couldn’t stop the run that automatically puts on a lot more pressure.

Ok

Now we have a respectable discussion. Too bad it is late. But we can go for a while. Cassel is not a bad QB. But, I think he had a lot of weapons on his team and that lead to his very successful season. Another thing, he didn’t lead the Pats into the playoffs. He doesn’t know what “winning” really feels like so he doesn’t really know how to get there first-hand. (I know he has been there as a back-up)
Jamarcus also never tasted the playoffs, but he did do some fabulous things during the season. He played up to his contract ever since he became comfortable in the system. (Thanks to Cable.) Jamarcus’ best years are in the near future. Next season will decided what Jamarcus is. To be honest, he is one of the best QB’s the Raiders could’ve got. He is a positive influence and he doesn’t turn the ball over. He doesn’t blame others and plays as a good teammate.

by Rayder K on Mar 27, 2009 1:14 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

My point that I’m trying to make, the system really doesn’t matter. Take a look at the receiver numbers (just receptions) and leading rushers:

Last year, Wes Wekler and Randy Moss (Pats leading receivers) combined for 180 receptions. (69 Moss, 111 Welker).

In comparison, Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez combined for 182 receptions, (96 Gonzalez, 86 Bowe).

In rushing, Larry Johnson only had 193 carries last season, but still almost busted 1000 yards (he ran for 874). Now, he was rarely used towards the end and was suspended for 4 games. If he returns (very likely since no one would really want to take on his contract),
and used for an entire season, there is no reason he couldn’t rush for minimum 1200 yards. But for this case, he only ran for 874. Using Cassel’s numbers from last year, he ran 73 times for 270 yards. plus Jammal Charles, 67 carries for 357 yards, together that’s 333 carries for 1501 (I’m only using numbers for the AFCs top 41 runners for 2008) Chances the Chiefs will use another back to offset Cassel’s number is very likely.

The Patriots numbers looked like this: Sammy Faulk carried the ball 156 times for 727 yards. Kevin Faulk ran 83 for 507, and Lamont Jordan ran 80 times for 363. That’s 319 carries for 1597 yards.

Haley is an offensive minded HC. Chan Gailey is actually rather brilliant. Taking into consideration the shortcomings last season of Tyler Thigpen, he built an offense that did a pretty damn good job. Superstar offense, nope. But give him a full offseason and training camp with these guys and something special may happen.

These are just very simple numbers, but these are the players that will do the majority of the workload. KC’s problems were in two areas: Special Teams and Defense. Pioli is addressing these issues. Really, it’s not issues with the starters, but the role players. The Chiefs were the youngest team in the NFL last year. No leadership or experience. This is being addressed.

If the Chiefs can win the field position battle and find a decent kicker, it will be interesting.

Keep in mind while KC was 2-14, they lost 7 games by 7 points or less (SD beat the Chiefs twice by only 1 point). Shoulda, woulda, coulda, the Chiefs had every opportunity to go 9-7. If they started last year with a decent QB, that could of happened.

Yes, Cassel didn’t lead them to the playoffs. But, as someone mentioned before, he has pedigree. He has learned from 2 Heisman Trophy winners at USC and studied for years under Tom Brady. He knows what winning is. Pioli and Haley know what winning is.

To say that this team is going to win the SB, that’s just silly. But to think that they’ll go 8-8, 9-7, or even 10-6, that is extremely possible. The AFC West is wide open and will be called many times The Wild, Wild, West. There is NO frontrunner for this division.

Now, I KNOW fans are fanatics, and being a PROUD lifetime member of the RAIDER NATION, we have plenty of crazy cousins who claim we are going to the big show every year. However, I doubt you’ll find any offering up an analogy comparing our 2008 offense to that of the patriots… the rest of you chiefs fans should be embarrassed and hope this half whit crawls back to whatever back-wood palatial trailer park he fell out of.

Perhaps a few tid bits you should have included, the Pat’s also put up 401 points to the chiefs 291, with nearly 1000 more total yards on offense, with fewer passing attempts, not to mention the nearly 500 yards more on the ground (all-be-it from way more attempts). but those attempts speak to another very important fact….

THE PATRIOTS WERE WINNING! AND NOT PLAYING FROM BEHIND ALL YEAR AS EVEIDENCED BY YOUR CHIEFS BEING OUTSCORED 440 TO 291!! Last time I checked, teams getting their butts handed to them tend to throw the ball more than normal, and vice-a-versa.

And yeah, wow I had to look twice at that Points Against stat, I though the Raider Defense took the year off. You really made a run at worst defense, only Detroit, St. Louis and the Donkeys were worse on defense.

The Raiders will be better this year, and like some have suggested got a shot at the west, but that would be with a barely .500 season (Raiders are just not there yet) – but that’s more than likely a FAR cry better than the chiefs and donkeys do, and now that Turner has another full year to destroy what shanahan could build but not coach, the Raider nation may just get a pre-mature shot at a first round playoff exit…

…but at least they won’t end up at the bottom just slightly above the donkeys again.

Thanks for the facts

If you read many of the above comments you will see that facts are of little importance to this thread.

Ok Guys, Good Discussion

I wished it was a little more friendly, but I can’t blame you guys, this is a rivalry. I hope we have more in the future.
