Defenders who are knocked to the ground no longer can lunge into quarterbacks if the play is still going on. Kansas City Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard did just that on the hit that ended Brady's season almost before it began, and NFL officiating director Mike Pereira placed such plays in the player safety category.

Little Girly Dresses need apply
This is what we should have our qb’s of the nfl wear! LITTLE GIRLY DRESSES and that way we can tell who the qb is and wont try and tackle him~
If you get knocked to the ground, dont hit the dude in the dress!
if you come around the end and you have a clear shot, dont hit the dude in the dress, in the head, or dont slam the dude in the dress down to the ground~ thus you get a penalty!
YOU DONT WANNA DIRTY THE PURDY DRESS!
sheesh, what a way to say to the fans of the nfl, WE VALUE OUR DRESSES, they look good on the qb!

The NFL operates just like the government:
Take one “shit happens” moment out of a plethora of otherwise unremarkable incidents and make a rule against it. All because of ONE play out of a season of literally thousands.
“Rule of thumb: When someone says, "There ought to be a law…” there probably ought NOT to be."

Penn & Teller Rule
I was just watching their episode last night on “cryptozoology”. Which is apparently a euphemism for “fake science for incredibly gullible people”.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
by UCrawford on Mar 25, 2009 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly!
Ever been to Boston? The “Big Dig” was the project that moved the expressway through the city from elevated roads and bridges to an underground tunnel running beneath the downtown. A government project that cost billions and billions more than ever anticipated, and with some parts so shoddily done that not only does it leak but a ceiling tile collapsed and killed a driver.
The referees have trouble enough following the rules already in place, that the last thing the league needs is even more rules added on. Why have the refs even more involved than they have to be? I like the analogy with the govt. because that’s where it seems to be headed. Let the players play.
Keep the faith!

Blockers
If they are going to enforce this there has to be a rule that the blockers have to let the defenders off the ground. The NE player was laying on top of Pollard, is he supposed to stop playing and just lay there because he is around the QB? I don’t want to see players hurt and lots of times QBs are in a vunerable position but they ARE football players.
In a couple of years we should just put flags on the QBs and be done with it. Some of the big QBs like Rothlesburger take advantage of the rules to constantly escape sacks knowing the defenders have to be carefull to make sure they have not thrown the ball or that they are below the knee or around the head. The QBs that are as big as DEs should not get the same protection because it takes a lot more to tackle them.

Big Ben
Avoids sacks by being a beast.
You’re just jealous. lol.
This rule is stupid. If quarterbacks are getting hurt maybe its a sign that they need to move from being skinny little tom brady pansies. Seriously. Teams just need to adapt to the game and get bigger guys to play quarterback.

Gotta Hand It To Ben
He is a beast man. I respect him because I don’t think he is the best QB but he makes his way by being a gamer.
He might not have all the passing tools of a Tom Brady but he buys his receivers so much damn time when he really needs to that he hits them for monster plays when it counts.
I think this is VERY important for a QB. Remember Eli shaking off that sack in the Super Bowl against the Pats? That was the play of the game right there. He should have been on his ass. Instead he kept hope alive, heaved up a wounded duck and they won the SB.

If I was running a team.
I would take Roethlisberger over Brady any day.
Brady gets hit in the knee and he is out for an entire season. Ben gets knocked out with his third concussion and is on the field 2 weeks later.
And your right about buying time. He makes plays happen. One of my favorite parts of the SB was when he avoided like 3 sacks and got it to heath miller on 3rd down.
I hope I can sit next to some of you guys at the Pitt/chiefs game this summer!

the first person i thought of was big ben
when i heard about this rule scrambling qb will benifit the most from this rule because they can always step up threw the pocket and not worry about a guy who has fallen at the line and trying to reach him as he passes by .this is a horrible rule it will effect the game so much. especially after a blind side block that knocks the player down ben runs by him and the guy is pretty much out the play. he cant like make a move from his knees as an extra effort to get the sack bad rule very bad rule but scrambling qbs will benifit from this all day long.

He hasn't put up the numbers
That I would like to see yet, but that’s just him being him and playing steelers football. It’s never about the numbers. We are never statistically the best team, yet we have 6 rings to wear.
Ill post about this again after this season when we see how both ben and matt do, but I think Cassel is going to be a huge flop and we will be praising Bones and his awesomeness.

i dont know haley has made alot of qbs good
warner was on the outs when he came to arizona haley got him back on the map and if thigpen can do well with gailey making the calls i would have to say cassel will be good. But ya steelers just get the job done they play winter ruff tuff football they make plays when it count even if its not the prettyest they get the job done and thats what counts . hey i dont hate on them they have a good franchise and understand what it takes to put up a contender every year. and what most shocks me is look at their coaches they dont change much they have only as a franchise had a few philosophys play d run the ball ground and pound . suprised the league hasnt caught on to there formula sooner . instead you have teams with new coaches new system every year.

Ben
I like Ben I just have seen several times where he will be in the grasp of one defender and the others pull up because of the rules about hitting a QB when he is in the grasp of another player, then he breaks the takle and makes a play. I think he is great for doing it I just think it puts the defenders at too much of a disadvantage.

Thank you chris for putting this up
The nfl game is just horrible i cannot wait until a key play in the super bowl comes down to a play like pollard and they throw the flag on it a riot will break out. pollard was playing until the whistle blew he had a shot at brady not to hurt him but to make a play . every coach in america teaches to play till the whistle blows and also if you get knocked down to get up and try to make a play. this is horrible we all need to get pitchforks out and blow torches and go to jeff fishers house because he is ruining the nfl along with other owners i know you have investments in your players but we the fans have investments in the game .

What are they trying to turn this game into. I get it, there needs to be some protection of players, but jeez these guys aren’t small, they aren’t weak (unless we are talking about Brodie and in that case a strong gust of wind will knock his leg off, so no rule is gonna protect him), they get paid more than our national deficit and they get payed to play in a Full Contact Game. WTF? Soon, Professional Soccer will have more legal hits than Football!

You also have different rules regarding tackling, there’s no blocking allowed, and the game’s not played at as high of a speed.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
by UCrawford on Mar 25, 2009 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My Biggest Problem With This Rule
Is that they’ve built it off a sample size of one incident. It’s not like there’s a rash of these, like with the rule outlawing diving at a QBs knees when you’re not coming off the ground (which I think is a legitimate rule) or helmet slaps from pass-rushing defenders (also legit). You’ve got one QB who got injured on this play without malicious intent from the defender and now they’ve got a rule that completely negates a defender’s ability to rush the passer if the blocker knocks him to the ground. It’s stupid.
Predictions for 2009

Again I agree
It’s stupid and emasculates the defender’s ability to play. I mean it’s fine and all ( to an extent) to have the game slowly angling towards offensive friendly. To an extent. But this is getting ridiculous. Half of the fun of watching football is watching the defense do their thing. Watching big hits, shut down players, trash talking, run stopping, interception enabling plays. That happens cuz the D gets in the face of the O and causes mayhem. What is the league looking at here? If they keep this up, might as well get rid of the D entirely and just have offenses go onto the field. Then we can call it American Cricket and prepare for games that are days long.
Ok I’m getting ahead of myself here. Look, what makes Football great is the competition, the physical chess match between offenses and defenses. The point is it’s physical. Let them play damnit.

Agreed
And Pollard still had a guy on him.
by FrankPitts on Mar 25, 2009 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Buuuuuuuuuuuull Shit
Next thing you know, defenders won’t be able to “approach the QB in a threatening manner while he is throwing the ball,” because it will be dangerous to his psyche thus causing a possible interception!
Jesus jumping Justin Medlock on a stick guys!
Now offensive lineman are going to do anything they can to just get a guy on the ground instead of actually blocking him. Watch for a huge increase in tripping penalties this year. Pollard was going for his waste till that fat ass Patriots O-linemen sat on him mid-lunge.
Why not just institute a rule that Patriots lineman aren’t allowed to be too fat, too old and too slow to block for them? I guess that would disqualify the Pats picking up Damien McIntosh in free agency.
If Vince Lombardi wasn’t decomposed and had just had a steak dinner in his coffin and was wearing pants, he would have just crapped them. Then, he would have rolled over in his grave to rub his face in it.

This league has a Tom Brady fetish…
by ill_spec on Mar 25, 2009 8:41 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I wanna see if I understand this correctly;
Bernard Pollard was doing his job according to the rules. He actually in some peoples eyes went beyond the call of duty by doing everything he could “LEGALLY” to get to the QB before the play was over in the backfield.
Now the NFL wants to tell players, you only have to give enough effort on any given play until we determine that your efforts could be detrimental to the QB, then you can just lay on the ground until the play is over.
I am not going to question the manhood of Brady, but I agree with those above that everything that can be done legal or not to a Defensive player entering the backfield, will be done to get him on the ground as long as the QB still has the ball.
There is no way they looked at past statistics to see how many QB’s have been injured from a player laying on the ground wanting to do his best to get to the QB. If anything, Pollard should have been awarded an “at a boy” by the League for his efforts on the play. In a time when so many NFL players are screwing up the NFL image of old hard working players, now we are asking the extra effort players, to only play half speed.

I don’t think he’s got any. And, I think that the pansies up in the front office of the NFL who came up with this ’Don’t hurt Brady’ rule are equally lacking.
The guy’s a football player. Injuries are a part of the job. If you can’t handle that, or if you don’t want to get injured, watch the games from the safety of your couch like the rest of us and go bone your supermodel girlfriend at halftime.

Do there job
If refswill call penalties for takedowns by offensive players maybe DB’s wouldnt be lunging from the ground at QB’s knees!
by dklogue1 on Mar 25, 2009 9:08 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
What Constitutes
a lunge?
So a player cannot lunge at the QB when he has been knocked to the ground. Obviously this doesn’t mean that when you get knocked down you are out of the play.
Does it mean you have to get up and be on your feet before you can attempt to sack the QB?
Do you have to take a step?
Technically, in my view of a lunge, even if you get to your feet, you have to take a step. If I get knocked down and I stand back up and Brady is moving away from me and I dive after him, isn’t that still me rising and lunging at Brady?
When a defender gets kncoked to the ground rushing the passer sometimes their only option to escape the blocker and keep presure on the QB and flush him out of the pocket is to keep scrambling on the ground twoard the QB.
Guys aren’t going to be able to do that now. What are they going to do? Lunge away from the QB to escape the blocker, then run around the blocker again and try to chase the QB?
Lunge can be defined as:
A sudden thrust or pass, as with a sword.
A sudden forward movement or plunge.
(from answers.com)
Should we call this the “No Sudden Moves around Tom Brady Rule?”
Does this mean just that you can’t lunge from the ground, as on on your knees?
