And with the #15 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the Houston Texans Select...
![]() |
Ohio St. CB Malcolm Jenkins |
ChiefDude with the pick...
The Houston Texans are a team still yearning for their first winning season despite having the 3rd ranked offense in 2008. If they want to make the playoffs in 2009, the Texans will have to fill some holes in their 22nd ranked defense. Their D-line is in pretty good shape with 1st round picks DT Amobi Okoye, NT Travis Johnson, and pro bowl RDE Mario Williams. Houston also acquired FA Antonio Smith last month to solidify the left side. At LB, Houston has pro bowl MLB DeMeco Williams and in the secondary they have franchise CB Dunta Robinson. It's a fairly impressive group of starters but they still have significant needs at OLB, CB, and S.
There are a couple of key play-makers in this year's draft that could put Houston in the running this year. CB Malcolm Jenkins is one of those guys. A top draft prospect of 2008, Jenkins decided to put one more year on the books at OSU and ended up earning the Jim Thorpe award as a result. Though capable of running a 4.3 40, Jenkins' average 4.5 time at the Combine seems to have lowered his stock. That may work out well for Houston who could end up with a steal here. Bottom line; Jenkins is the BPA at pick 15 of our mock draft and a great fit for the Texans at either FS or CB.
Previous pick: CB Vontae Davis

is it just me, or is this mock draft pretty bad
by SayHeyWerd on Mar 24, 2009 2:23 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I was just thinking of how well it is going
I think it only took last year to work out the kinks.

It's going great
If you’re looking for 100% realism in this mock draft, nobody has that. Nobody. Use this as a chance to learn and discuss the top 64 possible players in this draft.

no the analysis is good and all that
but I think the pick selections are off on most.

Thats kinda what makes this fun and interesting
It started off with UCrawford throwing a surprise in and the chips are left to fall where they may. :)

Good point
UCrawford was quite amused by our shock and outrage at his pick, I’m sure. ;)
Seriously though, we may not be that far off. We’ll just have to find out.
By the way, how many people expected Dorsey to fall to #5 last year? It was pretty unexpected, wasn’t it?
by ChiefsDude on Mar 24, 2009 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
True
I had Glenn Dorsey going as early as the St. Louis, and as late as the Oakland Raiders; just hours before the start of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Glad I Could Screw Up Your Worlds :)
Seriously, though, I think that the mock draft this year is much better than the one last year. Last year there were a lot more reaches I felt, where people drafted based on knowing a player’s name more than because the data pointed to them being a selection at the spot where they were picking This year, I haven’t seen too many of those questionable picks…I think everyone’s doing their homework and getting feedback as opposed to just tossing names out there.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

In Fact
Last year only four of the first round draft picks turned out to be correct. :)

One of them was Primetime's pick for the 'Boys
Yeah, 3rd person…that’s right.

I'm just not sure he will last until this position in the first round
He is a heck of a talent.

I totally agree
I was ready to pick Cushing here, but alas… I wonder if I can get the BRB guys stirred up about the possibility of drafting Jenkins. Somehow, I don’t think they’ll buy it.

Nice post
Thanks again for sending it in.

Texans had the 3rd ranked offence last year?
Who knew? Thats a bit of a suprise!
If you go out and you’re looking for the girl to wink at you and she hasn’t winked at you before 12 she isn’t going to. You might as well go home.

Yeah
I was shocked by that, especially considering that Schaub spent some time out with that Jared Allen induced injury.

i live in houston
i could see the texans going with the best CB or LB at this pick. Are there any stand out safetys in this years draft?
by DT58forever on Mar 24, 2009 2:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
not till the early second where guys like Louis Delmas and Sean Smith have good value.
by SayHeyWerd on Mar 24, 2009 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Has there been a mention
of Jenkins moving to safety at all?
by Chris Thorman on Mar 24, 2009 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh yeah
His size and open field tackling make him a great option at FS if it turns out that he doesn’t have the speed to play corner. That may be a legitimate reason that he falls to the Texans.
by ChiefsDude on Mar 24, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
I think he stays at corner. He ran a good time at his pro day so I think he stays there.
by SayHeyWerd on Mar 24, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not really
You have Louis Delmas at FS and Patrick Chung at SS, both would be decent pickups for Houston in the 2nd, but if they skip a LB in the 1st, they’ll have to look at Clint Sintim or Marcus Freeman in the 2nd.

What's on Jenkins' right arm?
A brand?
by Chris Thorman on Mar 24, 2009 3:03 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
hadn't noticed
I guess it’s a brand for his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi

Agree again.
I agree with both picks today. This exactly where I had both players going.
by ChiefsFan90s on Mar 24, 2009 3:24 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
disagree
they have Dunta Robinson franchised and Jacques Reeves who just came off of a 4 interception season. That’s enough to tie for 13th amongst all secondary positions in the NFL. Eugene Wilson is an average starter and gets the job done at the free position. The Texans have been man crushing on Brian Cushing and Clay Mattews. They want a rush linebacker badly so they can dominate in the trenches in a very Giantesque type way. Plus Kevin Bentley and Marlon Greenwood are old and could stand to be upgraded.
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

good points
Believe me, I had write ups for all three USC linebackers ready to go and it pained me not to pick one here. Clay Matthews has strong connections with Houston and arguably had a better Senior Bowl showing than his other teammates. He wasn’t that far behind Cushing and Curry at the Combine, either. But I felt it would be irresponsible to let a player of Jenkins’ caliber slip past when he could provide a solid upgrade to their secondary.
