And with the #14 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the New Orleans Saints Select...

I missed cmpotter's email earlier. Here is his post. -Chris

                    Illinois CB Vontae Davis

cmpotter with the pick...

The New Orleans Saints Have two glaring needs one more than the other.  The defense hasn't been to good the last few years.  Their offense is one of the best in the league, yet they still need a running back.  Yes, Reggie Bush makes plays, but he isn't going to run between the tackles effectively and isn't big enough to carry the full load.  That being said, their first pick needs to be on the defensive side of the ball.  The Saints are a mirror image of the Kansas City Chiefs during the Vermeil era.  One of the best offenses and one of the worst defenses.  If the Saints aren't a playoff team this season, Sean Payton will need to get his resume back out and post it on theladders.com.  He has already taken a $250,000 pay cut for the upcoming season. So...

With the 14th pick in the draft, the New Orleans Saints select Vontae Davis, CB from the University of Illinois.  He has great size and athletic ability to compliment second year corner Tracy Porter.  With Mike Mckenzie being cut and Jason David looking reminicent of Dextor McCleon,  This pick makes to much sense.  Davis listed at nearly 6' and 203lbs., can start right away and could also be moved to safety if needed, much like Antrell Rolle in Arizona. He is known for being a good tackler, and has the athletic ability to play in either man or zone.  Davis should be a starter right away for the Saints and will help this struggling secondary get some respect in the tough NFC South.

Malcolm Jenkins is listed by most as the top corner in the draft, but he will most likely be a free safety. Davis will be a better corner and could also play safety if needed.  Brian Cushing or Bennie Wells would have been a nice pick here and still may, but I believe they have to take a corner with this pick.  The Saints have been filling needs on the defensive side of the ball with the resigning of Vilma, the signing of Paul Spicer(DT from the Jags), and Darren Shaper a sorely needed safety. With Gregg Williams at defensive coordinator, and the Vontae Davis helping compliment the rest of the defense, the Saints have a great shot at winning the division and getting playoffs this season.

Previous pick: T Michael Oher

Yep

Jenkins’ Pro Day was a big enough improvement over his Combine that he’s still the #1 CB and the Saints could definitely use him.

OOOH

I get to pick Jenkins after all?

by ChiefsDude on Mar 24, 2009 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree.

This is exactly who I had the Saints picking in my own Mock Draft.

by ChiefsFan90s on Mar 24, 2009 3:22 PM CDT reply actions

I agree 100%

this is exactly where I have Davis falling. With the cut of Mike McKenzie the Saints are in desperation mode in the secondary. Look for them to call Rashaad Jennings, Shonne Greene, or LeSean McCoy, in the second round to spell Reggie Bush. Then most of the Saints draft should be going to secondary and depth for the D line and linebackers The Saints will be in the playoffs next year they’ve been doing so well this off season.

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
