My Draft Bracket
For all of you March Madness folks- giddy up! For all of you forlorn Football fans who are just passing time until Draft Day, I think I found the perfect compromise. As everyone sits and debates the merits of drafting X or Y player, I have found a way to settle, in my mind’s eye, who our beloved Chiefs should draft with the # 3 pick. Please note that this has about the same percentage of success as any of my NCAA Tournament brackets do, and probably more than the heartbreaking loss that West Virginia caused to me. Darn Bob Huggins anyway.
There have been some great arguments put forth here on AP for the top players in the draft. The general consensus lately seems to be that it is in our best interests to trade down and acquire more picks. I agree completely with that, but I don’t think it is feasible, unless Pioli can put another Belichick-Mind-Trick on some poor unsuspecting team. For the purpose of this post, I will assume that the “Wildcard Trade-Down Scenario” is out of play. Let’s look at the match-ups:

| * There is seemingly a glut of "Rush Backers" that could fall at the end of Round 1 or early Round 2: | |||||||
| Larry English, Michael Johnson, Connor Barwin, along with true 3-4 D Es Tyson Jackson and Jarron Gilbert. |
In the Linebacker Bracket we have perhaps the most talented position group in the draft. The top half of Round 1 pits Maualuga against Lauriniatus. This has been one of the most blogged about early season matchups on AP. Crazy "Seau-like" intangibles for Maualuga vs. the faster, surer tackler in Laurinaitus. This comes down to player preference, and I go with Maualuga. Greater risk/reward type player who could grow into our Teddy Bruschi. Maualuga moves on.
The bottom half of the Linebacker Bracket has everyone's consensus top LB up against a USC Hybrid- Cushing/Matthews. Curry sure "looks" the part of a future Pro Bowler, and I loved that he showed he could move in coverage at the Combine. Brian Cushing and/or Clay Matthews are both intriguing prospects and a "pick ‘em" in the bracket. Cushing seems a little maxed out on potential, while Matthews is exactly the kind of lunch-pail toting team player that we need to rebuild the Chiefs. Coming from a football family doesn't hurt either, so for me it is Matthews vs. Curry. In the draft world, tanglibles mean so much, so Curry moves on.
The Wide Receiver Bracket is one that will get a sideways glance from Haley and Pioli, which oddly enough may be just the kind of slight of hand smoke screen that they want to portray. Offenses are the "thing" right now, so playmakers are paramount. Maclin vs. Harvin has all the playmaking potential that any young team could hope for. Dual threats in the kicking game, both players add 7 points to our PPG stat immediately. Mizzou-bias wins out and Maclin moves on. The other Wide Receiver match-up has someone who should remind our Head Coach of a certain wide receiver...Anyway, Crabtree vs. Heyward-Bey is an easy one. Speed vs. Superstar. Superstar moves on.
The Offensive Lineman group is a highly touted bunch who would draw much attention from the Chiefs, except we hit a home run with Branden Albert last year. The Battle of the Smiths has all but been forfeited by Andre's immature Combine appearance, and Jason's 33 reps and quick feet. Jason Smith could very well be the 1st pick in the actual draft. Michael Oher seems to be a talented, not quite ready for Primetime, work in progress. So Branden Albert's ex-teammate will move on to face Jason Smith in round 2.
Lastly, the most interesting group in my mock bracket, the Defensive Ends and Rush Backers. This is a critical need for us if we want to be competitive next season. Anyone remember what it was like when we had JA rushing off the edge? With us transitioning to the Pseudo 3-4/4-3, it apparently opens us up to a certain type of pass rushing (predator, vulture, falcon, insert cool new phrase here ______) linebacker. And there appears to be a lot of these out there. Maybin vs. Brown is a battle of guys with great potential. Maybin may have the fastest first step of any player in the draft, but he is on the light side and needs to bulk up. Brown is fast, incredibly strong, and was a consistent sack producer in College. Since he is scheduled for a private workout with the Chiefs soon, I am picking Brown to move on. He seems to fit the mold of 3-4 Backer perfectly.
Orakpo vs. Ayers is a battle of more traditional style Defensive Ends (although Orakpo is projected to be converted to 3-4 backer). Brian Orakpo wowed all of us Big 12 junkies with his speed and strength this past season, while Robert Ayers was a one season wonder who outperformed the competition at the Senior Bowl. I love Ayers, and feel he could play the 3-4 end position, but one season is just not enough, so Orakpo moves on.
Round 2 is easy pickens: Curry's top rated status beats out Maualuga's Intangibles, Speedy Maclin loses out to Craptree's BPA status, Monroe's bad knee's and 23 reps take a dive to steadily climbing Jason Smith, and Everette Brown's potential (and amazing private work out) vaults him over previous front runner Brian Orakpo.
This is a special Final Four! Curry and Crabtree are two of the best players in this year's Draft bar none. Curry's inability to read Pro defenses lower his stock just enough to allow Crabtree's great hands to shine through. Jason Smith's strength and upside are tempting, but with Albert in place, Brown's potential wins out one more round.
The Championship Game has two players that no one saw getting here. Crabtree pulled an incredible upset over Curry, and Brown came out of nowhere on the lack of need at other top rated positions. Pioli rolls the dice, and Haley pulls for Crabtree, but Scott's love for Linebackers wins out.
So there you have it Bracket Junkies. Could we possibly see an upset of these proportions come April? Oh, and don't bring out the flame throwers just yet. I am still burning from all my NCAA losses!

Cool post...
I put the LT over the rush LB in value…but the LB wins if you are taking need into account…which you are.
Well done sir…
I hate March Madness
Football is my first love
but not my only one! I love the Tournament, and long for the day that the idiots at the NCAA decide to give us a College Football Tournament. It will be the “Greatest Sporting Event” in the country.
Agree with you about LT over LB, especially with so many of them in this draft. This is where not having our 2nd rounder really hurts, because we could pick up a guy like Sintim or perhaps English. But just like the Tournament, I couldn’t just pick all the obvious ones! And with Pioli doing the picking, is anyone sure what he might do? If he can’t trade down, he will have to pick someone.
+ 1 bazillion
on the College Football comment. I don’t care if our economy goes to hell and all of our wealth is redistributed as long as Obama gets the BCS or whoever to change the structure of the NCAA championship.
Rec'd
Mainly because you came up with an idea Chris and I couldn’t.
We thought long and hard about how to tie the tournament into a post. Excellent work my friend.
And kudos for using a table!
Q, this is pretty badass.
Impressive creativity. rec’d.

I don't have religion. I have Baduizm.
Also, a consolation bracket would be sweet too.

Like the NIT? Interesting.
There is so much good argument for all of these players. I had fun thinking about the draft in this way, although I think Pioli has a much different weeding out process than I do!
Yeah like the NIT
Using some of Nanz’s Unsung AP Draft Prospects.

The later round value picks are almost infinite
compared to who you think should go top 5 (I had to stretch a few players so I could have a complete bracket). Their should be a ton of great conversation over who likes who in the 4th round for instance. Everyday I see a new prospect who I have never heard of who has draft value.
The 2nd Round NIT Bracket already has a winner in Matt Cassel, so I guess we are picking our 3rd round player next?
Very Creative
Well done, TheQ. And, yes, damn West Virginia. And Utah and Florida State. I thought I was sitting pretty after picking Western Kentucky on day one. Who the hell would have predicted THREE five-twelves? Don’t the fives have any pride?
No kidding!
Although there have been some really good games though. Looking forward to Arizona St vs. Syracuse today. I think Harden and Flynn are both really good.
I love it
Gives some good thought behind the moves and kudos for the creativity. I’m not sure I’d agree with all of them, but hard to argue with the final product.

Thanks Eastcoast. I could have gone with just about any of the Final Four
But in the spirit of the Tournament, I wanted an upset pick and Brown seems to be the best of the “not talked about as much” guys. The more I look at Brown, the more possible he seems. Our great need for a pass rush, and the fact he seems to fit in the 3-4 being the 2 deciding factors. Don’t get me wrong, I will be estatic if we draft Curry, Smith, maybe even Crabtree, although I don’t think WR is as big a position of need for us. BTW, Thanks for not letting the East Coast Bias affect your opinion! J/K:)
Yeah
Crabtree is such a conundrum. He’s obviously got the skills, the abilities, and could become the next Fitzgerald. Could. But what is our biggest need? Sure it’d be awesome to have an unstoppable tandem pass threat, but can we get by, or even (gasp) do decently with the offensive weapons we have? Yeah I think so. Can we go with the D or O line that we currently have in place? Not so much IMHO. So if we were to rank our biggest needs and who is available at that point, I would say Brown, Curry, Orakapo, Maualuga, (not in order) then Smith (jason) or Monroe and then Crabrtree are our needs/draft position order. Hope that makes sense.
And hey, as far as being East Coast, I may still be at heart, but I transplanted out West, so… no worries :)

Crabtree would improve our team, but I agree, not our biggest need
We have to improve in the trenches, and I would agree on your assessment of needs. Makes perfect sense.
I was born in Pico Riveria, and live in the Midwest, so what does that say about me? I’m all screwed up! :)
On being screwed up...
Aren’t we all? Hey it keeps us interesting. I mean, why be normal? Hell I don’t even know what that means :) I was born in Oakland, moved to England, then to NY, went to school in Ohio, then AZ. Then lived outta my car and was a nomad for a decade. Which was amazing. I’m a heeb by birth, a vagabond by choice, an outdoorsy environmental educator and backpacking guide by profession, and became a KC Chiefs fan b/c back in the day they were all heart, big D and had the Nigerian Nightmare, so what was not to love. We may never have been the greatest of football teams but we sure as shit kept it interesting ;)

Man, you've lived an interesting life
No better teacher than travelling around and seeing different perspectives, philosophies, and such. There is no substitute to experience! We do have some really cool Chiefs fans all over.
I do think that we are building one of the greatest teams of all time! Enough of this just enough to keep it interesting crap! :)
Agreed
I’m so amped. It’s amazing, really. In years past, although I have always been an avid (rabid?) KC fan, around this time of year I would get somewhat apathetic. I hate to admit it, but my beloved Chiefs would let me down again and again. We go 13-3 in 95 only to lose 10-7 to the Colts cuz Lin Elliot couldn’t hit a field goal that day and cuz Bono threw 3 interceptions… Next year? Nada. In 03 we do it all again, exactly the same, 13-3, lose to the Colts by 7 in the playoffs. and the following year… nada. We were the winningest team in the League in the 90’s. And were in the playoffs so many times that i got to expect that we would make it, and then lose. But the we hit this rut, this drought, whatever you want to call it. And although every game I could watch I would, part of me just expected us to lose. Sad huh? But now… now, I’m amped all over again. And it’s March!
Part of that is the AP community. You all rule. And part is all the changes. In any event, you are right, we are building for the future, the optimism is full front and center, the energy is palpable and man oh man is it gonna be a helluva ride until september. So yeah, enough of this k i I crap, lets blow this sh&t up and turn some heads!

Love it!
Now is the time to be super optimistic for our Undefeated Chiefs! I am really pumped too, just kicking along the offseason seeing all the pieces to the puzzle we are collecting, waiting until we knock heads! Won’t be long. One thing, that I haven’t felt for a long time, is that we ARE going to win a Championship. I just know it. We are putting the pieces together, slowly and surely. Guys on learning that they are not bigger than the whole, and I can’t remeber the last time I knew that was true.
Good for us.
who?
Did I write that? I mean Uhm… whoops, uh, yeah, about that. :(

Everette Brown...
… is increasingly the way I feel we should go with our first pick, too.
He’s a hybrid (DE/OLB) pass rusher and run stuffer for the hybrid defense (3-4 and 4-3) we are gonna play.
He is the most versatile top defender and given our needs, would have the greatest impact. He’s a double digit sack machine in his rookie year, and may lead the team in tackles for a loss, as well.
I predict he’ll be the NFL’s defensive player of the year.
We really do need an impact kind of guy on defense
Brown or Curry both might fit the bill, but if you look at our current roster, I am not sure who fits/stays, and who doesn’t fit and has to go, so I am not sure which is a greater need? DE or LB? I would say DE as it stands right now. Besides, it is much more difficult to find premier pass rushers later in the draft, where as we should be able to find capable LBs down in the draft. I am sure this fact is not lost on Pioli. If Curry is there at #3 and we take him, that tells me that Pioli thought he was an impact player at his position and is probably better than any other player we could have picked there. What a great debate!
We need a true NT type to even discuss this
If not Raji who do you propose later in draft? A 335 lb’er taking C-G to block?
Raji could very well be in play in our actual draft process
But I couldn’t fit one more position group in my Mock Bracket. I tried to choose the 4 most likely positions for us to draft, and Raji might make sense for our 3-4 Nose, but the other guys close to him in value at his position are not even close to the top 10 overall ,and we are picking at #3. Draft speculation is just that, speculation. Bu regardless, if I was to pick our 2 most glaring needs on the team, it would be pass rush and O line. I would give Tank, Dorsey, and Edwards a chance to play the Nose. I also like Nanz’s guy in the late rounds- Dixon I think. We can find a big body to be a space-eater. I would like to see us get a impact guy, which to me means DE/OLB.
It's okay
I see that you would have to have enough viable options to make bracket.
Don’t you just love a Bracket-Buster.
I’m Not sure that Raji would be a good pick, just that a 3-4 needs a BIG BOY NT and we have good DT players but no NT. I don’t think feeding them more is the answer. I still like my idea of an undersized Sumo to play Nose for Chiefs, maybe we should check our Japanese sister-city? Or put Dan Salemeau on the job at a pig-roast :)

Love your boy Salemeau
His attitude is what is missing from our football teams. How do we get that back? I guess you either have it or you don’t.
Maybe it is the willingness to kill, spit, roast, and eat an entire Hog.
