I think Curry will be good
But its the same thing that happens every year. There is no perspective on draft boards.
All you can compare prospects to is to the other players in that draft. A guy that in some years might be second round talent might be the best player at his position this year. The fact that he is the best at that position in a given year lets people overinflate the real capabilities of the guy.
Likewise, if there is a very good draft class at a position, we tend to belittle a guy that is the third or fourth best at his position treating him as though he’s dogmeat and something to be avoided like the plague.
I think Curry has a lot of ability. Is he a Derrick Thomas or a Lawrence Taylor? No. And anyone drawing those comparisons is in for a rude awakening. Is he a Junior Seau or Ray Lewis? Only time will tell but statistically speaking, probably not.
He has the physical tools to be a good player, but nobody should be falling so in love with the guy that the world will end if we don’t get him. Look at his college stats. They’re OK, but there is really nothing phenomonal about them.
I think Curry is a pretty good player that has gotten a TON of hype around him and probably puffed him up to a greater value than in reality he has.
My fear about Aaron Curry
Is that he is a younger Derrick Johnson.
What you always hear about Curry is that he is a great athlete, fast and can cover ground but:
His awareness is his main weakness. Has trouble reading plays and diagnosing what is coming next. Relies too much athletic ability.
Curry has trouble diagnosing the play. He plays on pure athleticism at this point. Will need better coaching in terms of how to read a play on the next level.
Sound familiar? That’s exactly Derrick Johnsons problem. Some of these guys are so physically gifted in college that they don’t have to bother learning technique and can just get by on their athleticism. That hurts them in the NFL.
Maybe Curry will learn to diagnose and recognize whats going on where DJ never did. But its definately something that will have to be watched.
That is why I am starting to think that we may not draft Curry
if he is there at 3, and we can’t trade down. I believe they would love to get a premier rusher (although I agree that no one seems worth top 5) in the mold of a Demarcus Ware. Could Brown or Orakpo have that kind of potential? They may have to risk it. Also agree with you that there are very good LBs going to be there later in the draft, so they would have to feel that Curry is completely worth the #3 pick. Which seems suspect. With the top two tackles likely off the board, that leaves us with Stafford and Crabtree. Man, I hope your Trade Down Scenarios can pan out for us!
Comparing him to DT is hurtfull/helpfull
IF is the word. IF we make him inside LB then we will never know if he could be “Warrior”
New falcon Chiefs predator position.
If we Draft/Sign him let him play Warrior/WS DE and see what he’s got.
Otherwise Draft LT or NT or trade down
