Draft Needs Revised... Thanks Matt Cassel.
With the recent addition of Matt "King of The" Cassel and Mike "Czech Yourself" Vrabel it is not time to readjust our draft needs around our new commodities. Rather than studying, I take too much time out of my day to look at NFL draft prospects, scouring the ends of the internet (Walter Football, CDS Draft, NFL Draft Countdown, Draft Tek, etc.) to form my ideas of who would be the best draft selections. Now I am no "expert" like Mel Kiper Jr. or Todd McShay but I do enjoy studying the prospects and subsequently the needs of the Chiefs in comparison to the needs of teams drafting around us.
The draft is a mere 58 days away and I'm getting frantic and uneasy about the number of selections we have compared to the number of needs we have. And I hate to beat a dead horse but these are our most pressing needs. (These are with our current roster, subject to change: LJ, Tony G, and Brian Waters.)
- I think we can move Damion SackIntosh to RG to limit his playing space, which would only help out his cause. Thus, opening a need at RT.
- A top of the line Center to be the captain of the big nasties.
- A rush DE/OLB depending on our defensive scheme.
- LB's in general, sans Derrick Johnson.
- Depth Everywhere...

You look up so much stuff on draft picks…do you have a mock draft for the chiefs. I think you should post one. I would like to see your take on it.

Clark did say
we were going to be a little more offensively oriented… I think after Curry with our #3… were going O line

Why is it that all the mocks have Curry as an outside LB
and we immediately want to make him an inside LB?
by Steve_Chiefs on Mar 2, 2009 4:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I like Curry or Rey Rey...
but I think this team is improved the most if it takes OT at #3 and best defender available in the third round.
I know we all have chubbies for Curry but the difference between a 1st and 3rd round tackle is greater than the difference between a 1st and 3rd round LB. Word is this is a deep LB class.

I think I agree with OT
FA o-lineman, D the rest of way, KC land of the LB

Save Matt Cassel or BPA
I know we need defensive help but a more pressing need may be protecting our new shiny asset.

Agree
the transition of the D to 3-4 is going to make the D suck anyway. I say we take care of 1 side of the ball at a time. Trading down would be the best possible scenario, but also in my opinion one to the most difficult to pull off at this point. But if anyone can it’s Pioli.
Water and TG would definitely bring value in the 2-3 round range. I say Waters for a 2& 5th, TG for about the same. Most teams could come up with that for top performers like those guys. Then we can package LJ with a 2nd and a 5th move up the board, something like that.

Why do I get the impression were trading down to pick up a third and Rey???
We’d have to trade with San Fran though… No way he gets past Denver.. Plus San Fran could use some Rajiification and they may want to jump Green Bay on that one

I could live with that...
I don’t think DJ has a future in the middle. Vrable and DJ on the outside, Rey and ? in the middle. Pick up possible 2 interior linemen in round 3. Sure it will be another year of zero pass rush but this team has a lot of holes and we can’t expect to fill all of them in one offseason.

We do have $$$ though
And if I remember correctly, Pioli is a GOD at finding those middle tier FA’s that will fit our scheme. We might be in the playoffs this year; it wouldn’t surprise me.

Pendergast
How bad again was Pendergast at Arizona. Does he really know how to run a good 3-4

Mike "Czech Yourself" Vrabel
Ha, I love it.

Cassel's Assel
Pending the Waters thing I think we should draft OL
by Grand Master A on Mar 2, 2009 2:46 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I am starting to wonder if
they will focus their attention more to our offensive line as opposed to trying to beef up both sides of the ball in the same offseason. It seems crazy to completely abandon the 4-3 scheme when that is what our defense is built for when there are pressing needs on the o-line. We have to protect Cassel!!!
It is possible that they will still take Curry if he is there at #3 but I would not be surpised if they focus almost the whole rest of the draft on the offensive line.
Clark Hunt has already said that we will be more of an offensive football team next year. I am starting to believe him.

Defense, and a little offense...
We need to give Dorsey a shot at DE if we move to a 3/4…Everybody wants to knock him, but this could be a better position for him…I know most 3/4 DE’s are taller, and even heavier…But Dorsey will fare better there rather than NT in a 3/4…Speaking of NT, how are we going to run a 3/4 without one? Tyler doesn’t impress me, and he takes way too many plays off! I think he has the potential, size, and strength, but watching him pissed me off at times. He must really step it up. I think Vrabel could be a great mentor for Brian Johnston, Tamba, and Babin (if we resign him)…These 3 guys can potentially play OLB in a 3/4 with their size/specs being close to Vrabel’s. Anyways, long story short, I feel we are in way better shape than we think at LB for the 3/4, than we are in our line. Turk is kind of the odd man out here as I don’t think he would be able to play 3/4 DE or OLB…Possibly DE if he adds bulk…With the personell we have right now, Boone, Tyler, and Dorsey would have to be the front 3. We would get DOMINATED up front! Long story short, D-line is our first glaring need if we go to 3/4…We have potential at LB, to go with DJ and Curry (who will undoubtedly be our pick at 3 if he is there, and we keep the pick…NO QUESTIONS/HANDS DOWN)!
Offensively, I agree with moving D-Mac inside to guard…I think he would be such a better fit there as he can maul in the run game…His knees are a concern though. Herb or Barry-Rich should be ready to contend for RT next year, but if you look at NE’s line, there are very few O-Lineman that were drafted high…Pioli will put together a solid line from the draft, and undrafted free agents…He just knows how to find big, strong, dependable, (and most importantly) intellegent O-lineman late in the draft and FA…As for skill players, TG stays and LJ goes…Would like to get a decent back (Kevin Jones, Benson, Ward)? And WR will be key too…We need a Wes Welker slot type of guy that will do the dirty work. I don’t think we have one of those on our roster right now…Beyond that, we need to just hope that we start spending some bucks sooner or later in Free Agency…How about CJ Mosely from Jets/Mike Wright from NE/Drew Carter from Raiders/Hochstein from NE/Willis from Seatlle/Olshansky from SD/Shaun Cody from Detroit/M. Harris from S.D….??? These are the types of guys we should be targeting…Besides Olshansky, These are all second and third tier guys that could come and compete for a starting spot or be a solid reserve in both our new offensive and defensive schemes. Olshansky and/or Cody could start from day 1 in a 3/4…

Hochstein has signed a one-year deal with New England.

Crabtree.
Haley and Pioli will take a long look at picking Crabtree if they can’t trade down… With the Cassel trade, he’ll need weapons to buy him time to throw that don’t wear 88 or 82.
All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."
by IISaiNtII on Mar 2, 2009 2:57 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
That is why
We should seriously sign TJ Houshmanzdadah….or trade for Anquan Boldin. We need big time WR’s that know what they are doing.
by Matt_Grbac on Mar 2, 2009 3:42 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Why sign another
- receiver in Housh who’s is pretty old and on the downslide of his career or a guy who has had spats with our new HC instead of bringing in a guy they can lock down from the draft.
Out of the two though, I’d rather have Boldin, but I don’t see the Cards letting him go anywhere.
All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

Yeah and...
doesn’t Boldin hate Haley?

He would have to be a possession type WR
Catches everything thrown his way. Could a slot WR actually be a busted RB?

If we stay at #3
draft Curry. How many people would pass on Patrick Willis, Ray Lewis, or Derrick Brooks? Curry would be our QB of the defense and future leader. Especially if they calm down Waters and he stays. In rd 3 we can get our center (Caldwell, Luigs, Wood if he is there), move Niswanger to RG and use McIntosh or Richardson at RT. Our line…Albert, Waters, Caldwell, Niswanger, McIntosh. This will be serviceable until 2010 draft. Where we upgrade RT and RG.
But if we pass on Curry…definitely need to trade down and acquire more picks. Even if they settle for less (like swap 1st rd, and get the other teams 2nd and 3rd) we will be in a position to acquire OL and defense. IMO this will be better than just using the #3 pick on one OT. After all we have a LT, why not trade down, save money and take a more valued pick for RT. The 2nd & 3rd we pick up could be used for LB or DL.
But you never know… we still could get additional draft picks for TG and LJ to help fill our holes on OL or defense.

They're not going to sacrifice other areas of the Chiefs game
to help improve something else. That’s like having a leaky toilet and replacing the handle instead of the float or ballcock.
All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

Sacrifice what areas?
What exactly are you saying? Are you talking about defense? Offense?
by JZChiefsfan on Mar 2, 2009 4:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
We need to find someone in FA to fill at RT
Some of the older LT’s might be a possibility. I like Mac at RG or Bench as some have suggested.
by Steve_Chiefs on Mar 2, 2009 5:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If we stay
at #3, then we gotta go Curry. If Curry is gone then we go O Line. The only way we can trade down is to package a player with a pick.
Guards are easier to find off the street then the rest of the line. We gotta find a way to pick up another 2nd or some 3rd rounders we can use to move back up into the 2nd and get Mack/Unger.
