Yes, the Denver Broncos want Jay Cutler to return for a little sit down to mend fences after the team's reported failed attempt to trade for New England quarterback Matt Cassel. Cutler won't have any of it after the two sides spoke by telephone Sunday.

"They want me to come in and talk to 'em but I'm not doing it right now; I'm going to lay low," said Cutler. "The [Broncos] deny everything. That's a problem. We know for a fact they tried to trade me."

And...

to go with all this Cutler garbage. ESPN is reporting that Brandon Marshall was arrested in Atlanta for disorderly conduct. With all the past trouble, he will most likely be missing some games next year. Is Marshall Denver’s LJ?

Too funny.

On the conspiracy front. Michael Smith on ESPN, said he believes that Belichik wanted Cassel in KC. On a financial standpoint the 2nd pick has worked out good in the Pats past and they are the trading team and they get to chosse where to trade him.

If BB likes and has not choice but to trade Cassel, it makes sense he wouldn't send him to the Lions.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

That is debatable. Rivers had much better stats last season and he has actually lead his team to the playoffs, something Cutler has yet to do. I don’t like Rivers either, but I’m just sayin…

by paratrooper on Mar 2, 2009 9:32 AM CST up reply actions

Not this last year, though.

Not last season. I agree that in general the Chargers have had a better D than Denver in recent years, but last season both were bad.
I have yet to see Cutler win a big a game either, but I have seen him choke twice when all his team needed to do was win one game to get into the playoffs.

If by "around here" you mean AP

then don’t be too surprised. Opinions regarding your divisional teams get magnified, IMO. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the same effect among AFC East fans discussing their respective teams, either.

Cassel vs. Thigpen in Camp should improve the play of both.

Here's Another Twist

The guy stoking the fires about how the Broncos were shopping Cutler is apparently Chris Mortensen. So far the Broncos themselves keep denying that they’ve made any calls at all and that they only took calls other teams made. Mortensen’s claiming he’s getting confirmation from “multiple sources” (none of which he’s named). Adam Schefter, who’s got an inside line on the Broncos, is sticking with the story that the Broncos weren’t shopping Cutler.

So, could this be another Mortensen fabrication? Not that I’m unhappy it’s screwing up the Broncos, but that’s messed up if Mort’s trying to create a sensational story by exaggerating or misreporting what happened.

No

And it may not be just Mort…this is standard practice for Cutler’s agent. Peter King’s saying Cutler wanted out of Denver anyway and his agent may just be using the situation as an excuse to make Denver into the bad guy.

by UCrawford on Mar 2, 2009 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

I've heard this, too.

This is a post I read on a Pats forum regarding Cutler’s agent.

This is all pretty classic evidence of Bus Cook (Favre’s legendary well connected agent who had Tampa all lined up as Brett’s fallback last season pissing an already unhappy Garcia off out of the gate) trying to stir the pot because his client signed a crappy cap friendly 6 year incentivized deal that is currently paying him only $6M per even with all but his Superbowl incentives met in a $100M QB economy… They’d been talking new deal apparently with little success until this little tempest in a teapot errupted due to no efforts on Denver’s part. What would lead Tampa or Detroit to believe Jay might be available?? LOL

by NESilver on Mar 2, 2009 9:50 AM CST up reply actions

That Was The First Thought I Had

Contract renegotiation tactic. Nobody really gets that pissy about his name being merely mentioned in trade talks. And Cutler’s making peanuts by the standard of top NFL QBs. And this is definitely a Bus Cook type move. It’s tough to tell who’s the slimiest agent in pro sports right now…Cook, Rosenhaus, or Boras.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.

by UCrawford on Mar 2, 2009 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

Also

Peter King’s reporting that Cutler had already asked for a trade before all this went down anyway because he was angry that Bates and Shanahan were fired. And Cutler’s agent is James “Bus” Cook, Brett Favre’s agent…that guy has a history of causing problems with teams over minor incidents just to get his clients traded (as evidenced with what he did to get Favre out of Green Bay last year).

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.

by UCrawford on Mar 2, 2009 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

To Be Honest

Detroit wouldn’t have been a bad deal for him. They need a QB desperately and would probably overpay for him. He’d be throwing to Megatron (who makes bad QBs look great) and their offense has got the pieces in place to be really good next year (especially if they burn their top pick on an o-lineman). Defense is bad, but they’ve got plenty of picks to address that and they made a nice deal to score a CB with the Kitna trade.

I am actually surprised that the Vikings didn’t start talks for Cassel even with the franchise tag – Minnesota desperately needs a QB in order to make a serious push before the windows on some of their defensive players start to close.

They just need someone mediocre.

They were on the verge of the playoffs anyway thanks to their defense and running game. They just need someone ‘average’ at QB to get them over the top because the rest of their division stinks.

Tavaris Jackson couldn’t even manage to catch a connecting flight to mediocre. Sage Rosenfels fixes that problem and should get them into the playoffs.

by JacinB on Mar 2, 2009 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

They talked to Cassel's agent

Apparently, the Vikings looked into it but nothing came out of it. They looked into Sage Rosenfels instead, as they tried to trade for him last season but couldn’t come to an agreement with Houston.

I personally hope they fail hard so they realize what a mistake it was to pass up on Cassel.

Important to note about Cassel

“In half of the 16 games he played, Cassel did not throw an interception. Three times he threw two picks, but never more than that. He struggled against the No. 1 rated defensive in the league – who didn’t? – going 19 of 39 for 169 yards and two interceptions against the Steelers. But those consecutive 400-yard games came against the Dolphins and Jets, two defenses that finished in the top 11 in our year-end rankings of the league’s 32 defensive units.”

Cassel became only the 5th QB in NFL history to throw back-to-back 400 yard games.

by sexassassin on Mar 2, 2009 11:57 AM CST up reply actions

Not for me

I would opt to take a known good player and work him into the scheme we have. I can’t see the use of trading our young experienced guys, for more unknown and inexperienced rookies. It does take 2 to 3 years for the DLinemen and OLinemen to really develop.

Dorsey is going to be a Pro Bowler one day, so I would rather we keep him and use him in the best way possible.

by TXChiefan on Mar 2, 2009 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

I also see him in the pro bowl maybe one day

But the guy in a 3 -4 is small he is to short doesnt carry enough weight and has poor fundimentals as it stands right now. Not saying the guy wont be a stud but when you put him in a 3-4 he is constantly going to be double teamed he doest have the size to push the pocket. And he struggled in a 4-3 he will really struggle in a 3-4

Important thing about Steelers game

Cassel was throwing right on target for most of the game that day (and it was raining, by the way), but our receivers had a really bad case of the drops. Moss dropped an easy touchdown pass (maybe twice), and Gaffney dropped some wide open passes as well. I do remember one INT being a bad throw, though, but I think at that point the game had fallen out of our reach (terrible day all around for the entire team except Kevin Faulk).

The Rams game, another two-interception performance (although with one TD as well), neither INT was Cassel’s fault. Wes Welker tripped up on the turf all by himself while running his route, so a DB was there to catch the pass instead. The other was a ball that shot up into the air after bouncing off Randy’s shoulder, if I remember correctly.

He looks good

He’ll definitely get a shot at the backup spot. Belichick knows O’Connel had to deal with a crappy O-line while he was in college, but he liked what he saw from him. The only thing they need to work on with O’Connel are his footwork and throwing mechanics. He’s a little raw but I’m sure the Pats can bring him along.

I also expect the Patriots to bring in a little competition for him, as the job is never just given to you here in New England.

No thanks on sending anyone of value to Denver. Seeing a McImplosion would be awesome though.

The Cutler Debacle is more fun than the Cassel trade.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

That would be a great meeting to hear.
