Dispensable Chiefs
via multimedia.heraldinteractive.com
I was day dreaming a few days ago about some of the players on the Kansas City Chiefs roster and their future with the team.
My thought centered around me thinking like Scott Pioli and Todd Haley, as in looking at the team from an outsider's perspective. When I did that, I came to the conclusion that there are probably a lot of Chiefs players that Pioli and Haley don't give a damn about but that as fans who have followed these guys for a couple of years, we think they're roster locks.
This is sort of related to the Bobby Sippio phenomena of 2007, where Chiefs fans put on their homer blinders and couldn't see past the fact that Sippio was in the Arena League and no other NFL team was interested in him. We saw the YouTube highlight video, the fact that he was Dwayne Bowe's cousin and we figured he's got to be pretty good, right?
Wrong. Sippio turned out to be exactly what he was- a street free agent who barely lasted on special teams. That is going to be the hard truth for some of our "favorites" on the roster now.
Here are the guys that I think Chiefs fans think are pretty decent but in reality they're as interchangeable as any free agent off of the street. Pioli and Haley probably haven't given these guys a second thought.
- C Rudy Niswanger
- WR Mark Bradley
- CB Maurice Leggett
- T Barry Richardson
- T Herb Taylor
I don't want to destroy any optimism surrounding these guys. I just want to mention that we lived and died with these guys through their first seasons with the Chiefs, through the drafts, so naturally as Chiefs fans they're more significant in our minds than they may be in the mind of an outsider.
My point is this- when a few of these guys are inevitably cut in the coming months, don't flip out. They weren't that good to begin with. Don't let your emotional attachment to a player cloud your judgement.
*The next pick in the AP Mock Draft is ready to roll. Check back in a bit.

2nd round tender???
Didn’t Rudy get a second round tender as a restricted free agent? If not a second, he was definitely tendered. I don’t know if they would have wasted that if they didn’t have him in their plans some how.

Not sure about the tender
I don’t think Pioli and Haley care too much about him though.

The offer can be resended at any time.
Did I spell that right?

Think of it like this
Rudy is not a good center so how bad must his backup stink to not beat him out? I say we are keeping Rudy as a backup C and/or G in hopes that we can draft a better center this year. We will cut whoever couldn’t beat Rudy out. Rudy isn’t costing us much more than a roster spot so holding him in reserves isn’t going to kill us.

Mark Bradley
I really can’t argue with your list, even Rudy. I think the signing of Copper and Engram will up the competition come training camp. It’s a win win for the Chiefs and the fans.

I see what you're saying
about the likelihood of whether or not these guys will actually be on the roster come September. Niswanger probably stays. A couple of these guys will be on the team IMO and some won’t.

Was Bradley with the Bears when Haley was the WR Coach
If so, Haley may have a good feel for him one way or another.

To be fair to Sippio
I blame the excellent cinematography of Hard Knocks that some how made him look really good for a moment.

Only thing I can argue with
Is putting Bradley on that list over Jeff Webb. I think Bradley stays put and get’s worked with more, whereas Webb will be jettisoned.

He has to be gone.

LOL
I bet he stays until draft or possibly minicamps. I hope Bradley stays until training camp though, he showed flashes of talent last season on the field. At least after he was first picked up anyway :p

Wasn't he injured?
Seems like I remember him coming in, being really good for a few games, getting injured and disappearing, and then being pretty mediocre when he came back at less than 100% …

Saints game
I like Bradley but when I think of him I can’t get that crucial 3rd down drop in the 4th quarter against the Saints. Unfortunately that play leaves a bad taste in my mouth

Then Bowe should make you feel like you just ate a dog turd
as far as bad tastes in your mouth go…
Bowe dropped more critical passes (including one crucial on-side kick) than everyone else on our team combined.
I still love Bowe.
I think Bradley needs another year to assess at least… if he can stay healthy he can be productive.

+1
But, I will agree about T-Rich. He was the man. Our offense has not been the same since he has been gone. A lot of people would say that is solely because we don’t have the Willies anymore but, I am going to say on record here that T-Rich and Jason Dunn were a HUGE part of the reason our running game was so good back then.
Mike Cox is not going anywhere, He is a PLAYA.

I think I'd take Herb Taylor off that list
at least until after the draft…
He has shown that he can be a quality back-up LT…until we find a guy who backs up Albert better than Taylor can, I think he is safe.
One thing that can cause a LOT of disruption on a team is losing the LT to injury, and Mr. NoName McAsshat has to relieve him…defenses lick their chops when scenarios like that arise.
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

I tend to agree
on Herb Taylor. He came in and played some pretty good LT for us when we needed it.

Maurice leggett
You must not have been watching if you think for second they’re even considering moving Leggett – he was their best special teamer and has the athleticism to become a starting corner in the NFL – no chance they part with him. He showed flashes and he is still very young…he is exactly the type of piece you look for in a salary cap era.

Legget > Rolle?
Samari Rolle was released today by the Ravens. Or maybe Rolle can come in and play a mentor type role?
Headline: Rolle Playing. Boom, write that down.

I'll say this
The new establishment has shown that they will not avoid signing a free agent they think can help the team, regardless of age.
That being said, I would expect all these guys to stay on the team until Haley and Pioli find somebody they think can do the job better without breaking the bank…that’s part of the reason I think Taylor stays.
Reliable, inexpensive back-up Left Tackles don’t grow on trees.
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.
by PVChiefsfan on Mar 18, 2009 9:12 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Just to point out ...
The new establishment has shown that they will not avoid signing a free agent they think can help the team, regardless of age.
The old establishment didn’t avoid signing a free agent they thought could help the team, regardless of age, either until about two seasons ago. Prior to that, that’s pretty much all we did.
And, because that philosophy lead to the great collapse of ‘07 (and, as a result, the scrap and rebuild of ’08), that’s also a big part of why we are where we are.
Just sayin’.

Maurice Leggett
If they were to let Maurice Leggett go I would be seriously disappointed. He showed he can be an athletic player and has turned out to be a real steal since he was undrafted and won our rookie of the year award last year. And Herb has showed “some” promise. And I’ve never seen Barry Richardson play so I can’t comment on him. But it sure would seem like a wasted pick if we up and cut him. I have faith in Pioli. He’ll do whats needed.

I'll Disagree On Bradley And Leggett
Bradley’s accomplished more than Sippio ever did and has been a net positive for the offense. His biggest negative is an inability to stay healthy and on the field…which makes him expendable but not necessarily easily replaceable. Leggett is a solid nickel back and can step in as a starter…his play last year was very good for a rookie and he may have a future in this league so it’s premature to write him off as filler.
Agree on all the others…Niswanger and Taylor have their uses but they’re limited players who can be easily replaced by a player off the street with little to no dropoff in quality. Richardson is so far just taking up space on the roster.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

I too was impressed with Bradley when he was on the field.
There were quite a few times down the stretch of the season when teams doubled TG or D Bowe where Bradley was wide opne deep deep deep down the field, but Thigpen either didn’t have the protection or the field vision to see him. In addition, there were several times when Thigpen saw him, and tossed up a shitty ball.

I would
like the Chiefs to keep Richardson around he is a BIG body and hopefully he can be our RT, I know he needs alot of grooming. Herb is a perfect LT backup and RT if needed Theres no way you get rid of him or Legget( if anything Legget becomes a great special teamer) even though I think he will amout to more. I like Bradley too, I think webb should be more on the chopping block instead of Bradley. As for Niswanger Eh, cut’em move’em i dont really care. Prob. a good backup and depth on the Oline. I think thats one thing we will have is alot more depth on our roster this year.

Does anybody know anything about this guy?
WALLACE GILBERRY #92
Rookie joined the Chiefs from the N.Y. Giants practice squad on November 5th … Finished his collegiate career at Alabama ranked second in school history with 60.5 tackles for loss, trailing only the late Chiefs Hall of Fame enshrine LB Derrick Thomas (74.0) … Saw action in 50 games (38 starts) at Alabama, recording 188 tackles (99 solo) with 60.5 stops for loss (-223.0 yards), 22.0 sacks (-135.0 yards), 38 QB pressures, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and four passes defensed … Originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the N.Y. Giants, but was released prior to the regular season … Spent the first nine weeks of the season on the Giants practice squad.
I think there is a lot of talent on this team. They just haven’t been put into the right system and coached properly. Haley will spot guys that he really likes and others that he doesn’t and I have the feeling that he will find guys that play his way and put them all in a system that will win. I like Rudy, Richardson, Taylor, Leggitt, Cox, Bradley and others but probably very few of us are as knowlegable as Pioli, Haley and the other coaches at picking talent. I have complete confidence in their abilities and if they need someone else, it’s pretty obvious that they are going to go out and find them. I’m still seeing 9-7.

I was curious about Gilberry as well
I thought he could be a dark-horse starter in a year or two. He was practice squad for the Giants, but they have an awesome front four and it would be hard to crack the starting lineup. I hope to hear more about him this year.

As fans...
I think we way over estimate a lot of these guys in their overall importance. I don’t think the new brass are impressed with this roster at all. 6 and 26 last two years, they can’t be but so good.

Richardson, Leggett and Bradley
I’m more apt to give them time because last year was their first year as Chiefs… and for Richardson and Leggett, it was their first year period. Leggett showed flashes of great play last season and I think he should be kept.
I want to see if Richardson can develop.
I want to see a full season of Bradley with the team, and I want to see him survive a season – or at least 14 games.
by Ochophosphate on Mar 18, 2009 10:39 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I have to disagree on this
For the most part at least. These aren’t the guys who come in to the NFL and light things up, but teams like Indy and New England are built with this caliber of player that they end up coaching up.
Rudy is the perfect example of a low-ranked lineman who could all of the sudden help anchor a line in his 4th year in the league. Almost every good line has at least one guy who came from the bottom and stuck around in the league long enough for it to “turn on”. Brian Waters is one of these guys.
Bradley has the opportunity to be another Eddie Kennison. While he won’t have the #2 spot set in stone, I have HUGE doubts that we would cut him this year. Not after his production last year.
I’ve never been entirely convinced by Leggett, but he showed a lot towards the end of the season. While I could see him getting cut for some of these veterans we’ve brought in, he will end up in the league as somebody’s nickel or dime corner.
Barry Richardson? Well, a lot of people were high on him in the draft I guess. But I don’t know anybody who thinks that he’s “good”. He’s just a project pick coming off his rookie season. Definite possibility that if he doesnt come to camp in shape and ready to work he will be cut. But he will benefit from the same problem that Herb Taylor will benefit from…
Herb Taylor will stay on the team because we have no other decent backup tackles. Even if we get Eugene Monroe with the #3 pick, that leaves us with 3 decent tackles (we’ll count D-mac as decent) besides Herb. And he’s much younger, and more versatile than McIntosh. I don’t expect him to start any time soon, but last year he proved that he’s not somebody who is going to make you hold your breathe every time the ball is snapped.

Oh lord please
Oh please let us get rid of Rudy Niswanger for a “off the street free agent” . I have no “emotional attachment” to him, I swear.

Herb Taylor...
Really liked how this guy stepped in during training camp and again during the season with the task of anchoring a horendous offensive line and seemed to thrive in doing so. Then really liked the fact that he did a damn fine job for a young guy in his position. Gotta think he’ll be around for not just depth, but maybe our eventual right tackle.
Of course i could be wrong…

I agree with The Shuffle
None of these guys are making any money, all of them either started, or backed up admirably, all are fairly young and there are guys on the roster that are worse than every one of them. One maybe two will get cut, but not until late in training camp when rosters are cut to 53 man.
With 30 catches in 8 games, Bradley stays for sure, you don’t kick a guy like that to the curb, even if he is injury prone.

Devils advocate here...
None of these guys would be in the NFL if they weren’t good players. One mans trash is another mans treasure. I think every player that has been mentioned here has potential to be very good in the right scheme and with the right coaching. Herm’s shitty excuse for coaching could have ruined all of their careers if he had not been fired. Fortunately they are all still young and have the ability to be coached up.
Some of these cats may or may not end up playing for the Chiefs but, whatever they wind up doing I hope they wind up with a better HC than Herm Edwards so they can be put in a position to succeed.
