And with the #5 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns Select...

Michael-crabtree_medium

                Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree

HIV 2 Elway with the pick...

Who wants the #5 pick?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Who wants Stafford?  Anyone?  Who wants Michael Crabtree?  Anyone?  The general consensus for the #5 pick over on the Brown’s page was defense.  With Curry and Raji off the board, taking one of the remaining defenders at #5 is a reach.  We’d love to trade down about 5 spots and pick up Maualuga but alas, we can’t find anyone willing to pony up for the #5 pick.  That said, with the #5 Cleveberg takes Mike Crabtree.

While we’re essentially going best player available in Crabtree, we’re also addressing one of the team’s top needs.  The Browns were dead last in passing offense in 2008.  On top of that their high profile tight end and his swollen balls are on the way out of town.  At the same time, their slot receiver is doing his best Leonard Little impression and should expect to miss time next season.  If they want their fruitcake QB to succeed, Cleveland needs to get Brady some options.

In 2008 the Browns, as a team, had 238 receptions for 2537 yards and 11 TD’s.  As a comparison, Tony G and Dwayne Bowe combined for 182 receptions for 2080 yards and 17 TD’s.  Wide out is a glaring need in Cleveland and Crabtree will be a nice compliment to Stone Hands Edwards.

Previous pick: DT B.J. Raji

A pass rusher is another option here IMO. The Browns only managed 17 sacks last year. They're in a similar situation as the Chiefs- in need of a pass rusher but who is really worth it this high? But for the Browns, when you lose your second best receiver (Winslow) and another receiver (Stallworth) in the course of two weeks, you have to take someone on offense if you can't trade out. Crabtree it is.

Everette Brown

I think would be worthy of this pick, and would fit in Clevelands scheme. But excellent work none-the-less.

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

Or

Orakpo. He’s working out with the Browns.

I don’t necessarily agree with this pick (pass rusher is a bigger need IMO), but I can definitely see the logic with Stallworth and Winslow both gone now.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 17, 2009 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

Leanord Little mowed someone down while drunk as a skunk and only ended up missing 8 games or something completely ludicrous like that. Back then he was just a backup, so maybe Stallworth will take more of a hit for being a more notorious player. Also this is the Goodell era, and his punishments have been stout. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

by Ochophosphate on Mar 17, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

That wasn't under Goodell

Who has placed a major emphasis on Player Conduct.

Even if Stallworth wasn’t drunk, there’s been some reports/speculation that he swerved into the other lane to avoid a car that was stopping at the red light ahead…

by Joel Thorman on Mar 17, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it makes sense

which is why I’m not arguing too much. But I like Brown over Orakpo

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

ssssh

i want him for the Bucs but I doubt he’ll last that long. lol

When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that name everything, the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks.

I'd be fine with 9-7 or 10-6 and competiting for the divsion title

by madtheory on Mar 17, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Too high

Not with his injury and their other needs. I might not even make him the first WR taken.

by FrankPitts on Mar 17, 2009 10:17 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah

I can see him as a 3-4 guy but I just don’t see the major draw for the 5th overall pick.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 17, 2009 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Crabtree isn't a bad choice but...

He does not strike me as someone Mangini would take with his #1 pick. Could be wrong, but personally, I think Mangini is going to want defensive help. I’m not saying Orakpo and Brown are going to be great or even good, but with the Browns’ huge needs on defense and the way I think Mangini will be running the Browns, not Crabtree.

Got To Say It Makes Sense

Even without the pending charges, Donte Stallworth was a disaster last year and they’ve got nobody to take heat off of Edwards. I think they’ll definitely grab Crabtree. He both fits a need and probably is BPA at this point.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

by UCrawford on Mar 17, 2009 10:26 AM CDT reply actions

ya and if crabtree can actually catch the ball unlike edwards that would be a benifit to everyone

and if the brown do make a trade for cutler you never know crabtree would be a huge weapon.

Browns are in bad shape...

they need help on the d-line, at line backer, reciever, running back, and possibly tight end. #5 is too high for Rey Rey, way too high for RB, and I’m personaly not impressed with the remaining d-line options. Crabtree is the last man standing that addresses their needs.

by HIV 2 Elway on Mar 17, 2009 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

That Team Is Definitely A Mess

I can sort of see why they traded Winslow. The guy’s a constant injury risk and he’s got terrible knees thanks to his off-field stupidity (plus he wanted a new contract). But they’ve got holes everywhere and I personally think they’re in a lot worse shape than the Chiefs at this point.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

by UCrawford on Mar 17, 2009 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Plus they gotta picks for Winslow

That can also be used to address multiple areas of need.

They’re not that far off from the Chiefs…tons of needs. BPA makes sense.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 17, 2009 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

orakpo got pretty much shutdown his bowl game the guy has speed

but with and elite guy on the edge he could be shut down

Whoops

Didn’t mean to have this post so soon after the other pick.

HAHA! Bonus!

Hey

Just because we have deadlines doesn’t mean we can’t crank the picks out faster, does it? I’m all for pushing this thing through!

by ChiefsDude on Mar 17, 2009 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Rey Maualuga is a reach here.

He’s without a doubt the best ILB in the draft, so why not take him?

Crabtree is the BPA though so I agree with you on this pick. I think Maualuga would be a good choice too though for the people that say he’s a reach.

by Vince D on Mar 17, 2009 2:17 PM CDT reply actions

I think it will be Orakpo here...

They need pass rush…

They have Braylon at WR….

by woodman212 on Mar 17, 2009 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

They have Braylon, and...

who else? They lost their #2 reciever, they will lose Stallworth. I thought about pass rushers but I don’t think there is a legit top 5 pass rusher in this draft. Orakpo screams bust.

by HIV 2 Elway on Mar 17, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

He certainly does have Gholston written all over him...

Idk what will happen….

Would be funny to see Mangini pick a “workout warrior” two years in a row…

by woodman212 on Mar 17, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

this just in

orakpo recently spotted at a tattoo parlor getting vernon gholston tatooed on his ass.
