Seattle addressed it's most glaring need by signing TJ (my favorite TV Commercial) Houshmandzadeh in Free Agency. They also snuck in and swung a less-publicized deal which helped shore up their D-Line. Colin Cole won't sell a ton of jerseys like the aforementioned TJ, but his girth will bring some stability to the much criticized D-Line.

That said, there's no reason to put a band-aid on a sucking chest wound and call it fixed. The Seattle D-line couldn't stop a wet fart in 2008 and the addition of Cole will help, but won't solve the problem.

Enter the #4 pick BJ Raji from Boston College.

He's 340 lbs. of mean. He lead the nation with 16 tackles for loss and 8 sacks last year. He was the most dominant D-lineman at Senior Bowl and blasted 33 reps off the bench at the Combine. He brings immediate help to the D-line and gives the Seahawk LB's and secondary a much needed opportunity to perform up to their potential.

As a Chiefs fan, I have an unnatural aversion to picking defensive linemen (heck, defensive players) this high in the draft and Raji is no exception for me this year. He sat out the '07 season because of academic issues. He also received a Senior Bowl/Combine bump IMO, which for me throws his draft position up in the air.

Even with my concerns, I didn't see the guy play and I can't make really any informed judgment about him. Those who have seen him play, chime in and help the rest of us.

Personally, I'm still snakebit by all of CP's lousy DT selections

I know Pioli’s running the show now (for which I’m very thankful), but it’s hard for me to forget the Chiefs’ bust rate at this position. I’ll echo mikvogel’s comments about the natural aversion to the position and suggest that may be why Raji hasn’t garnered more attention on AP. Just a personal hypothesis.

With the premier OT's off the board

this pick is between Crabtree and Raji for the Seahawks. With Crabtree’s speed still a mystery and concerns about his route running, the Seahawks make a good choice in beefing up their disastrous DLine. With the addition of Raji and Redding coupled with two probowl calibur linebackers the Seattle D will be signifcantly improved for 2009.

So why insist on paying out the big bucks for a LT still when we could take ADVANTAGE of the LT situation and invest in the defense with this top 3 pick. You can get your offensive lineman later in the draft. Pioli will not under any circumstances draft an OT with pick #3 NO MATTER WHAT. 99.9% that is. 0.01% chance we get Smith.

We need more than one OL.

And taking one this high will go a long way in bringing it back to its glory days as the best in the league. We’re still at least two linemen away from being set, and I think taking care of the OL first is the way to go.

Yeah I get ya. Back to the glory days when we had the best offensive line and overall offense and couldn’t even get the opposing team to punt. Of course we need help on the offensive line still. But we do that later in the draft. You don’t waste the potential value in Albert as your LT as last years NUMBER FIFTEEN pick in the draft.. OL is definately NOT the way to go and that’s exactly why the Chiefs won’t take one. I’d bet someone $1000.00 on it.

our LT is a steal considering what we would have paid had he been a top 5 pick. You don’t blow that – don’t waste it. Not when you can go a long way to improve the D by taking Curry or Raji. Bang for the buck. Keep Albert as your LT. Heck if you are so hell bent on moving Albert then just sign Pace for a couple years until we can find the right guy for RT. Albert is your LT. We should be thankful.

This is why it is not unlikely....

I will agree with you that right now, Albert is a “bargain” at LT. He was picked at 15 and is being paid as such and he also played decent. However, Albert has the versatility that he could anchor a separate position on the OLine, one that is currently held by I-77 (McIntosh, Freeway to the QB). If you are given the oppurtunity at #3 to solidify BOTH tackle spots for the next decade you do NOT pass that up.

You say we need a DT, well we took one at 5 last year and he is going to develop and be a stud, we should be confident of that.

One area where you’re argument is false is that you think it would be easier to find a RT later in the draft or in FA. It is MUCH easier to find a LB/DT later than to find an elite RT…which Albert would be…

Im not totally set on albert

sure he did a wonder ful job but when we needed to gain 1 yard we couldent do it the arrow spread hid a lot of flaws in the line. So how do we know he really is great at the position. Everyone looked good in arrow spread because the ball was out before they could even look bad.so im not a 100% sold on albert and wouldent mind going oline.

Since we may very well end up with CURRY. NOT a LT .. because we already have one. That is a potential advantage that you should exploit. Especially taking into consideration the cost of fielding a great defense.

if pioli wants to make good on his job he gets a safe pick get monroe or curry or another oline man the way the nfl works a pick this high could set you back for years no time in reaching for a raji . when you can go to a safe pick the helps everyone an o tackle would help our run game our defense and our new qb why not invest in a o lineman?

One Problem with the Pick

If they brought Colin Cole in as a stater, this pick dosn’t make any sense when you combine it with the Jullian Peterson for Corey Redding. That would give them 3 DTs.

Is Cole a starter?

His profile shows he’s only started 8 games in his career. I don’t know enough about Seattle to know who’d they take, although I wouldn’t think Crabtree is out of consideration even with the signing of TJ.

Dont feel alone they came down on me last night! It seem’s like you guy’s that have been here for awhile come down pretty hard on new guy’s opinion’s! Should we just keep our mouth’s shut? It’s hard not to get defensive when your response is to make a guy look like a idiot, after all it is just a opinion! Now back to the subject i really dont see us drafting another DT, and i dont see us going for a LT either but alot depends on how the draft goes and who is off the board! B.Albert i think would make a great LT but he did play guard so maybe they move him back to right guard and draft LT! I feel that the D-fense needs more help with the first pick but if curry is gone i dont think they will draft Raji and im not sure there is anyone left that is worthy of a #3 pick on the d-fensive side of the ball! And that my friend’s is just my opinion!

You shouldn’t keep your mouth shut but you also should not resort to name calling. There are plenty of ways to make a compelling case for your opinion, calling someone an idiot is not one of those ways.

I agree with the “if it aint broke don’t fix it” mentality towards our current LT. I see what JChief is saying, however, I’m turned off to his otherwise good ideas when he starts insulting people personally.

Albert won't be moved to guard

He is a bargain at LT and would be paid on par for a starting RT, but would be overpaid as a guard. The only guards that make that type of money have been to multiple Pro Bowls. I only see us drafting Raji if we are set on transitioning to a 3-4, but feel it would be a lot of money to spend on hole-plugger position with little pass rush responsibilities. The top three players in this draft are (in no particular order) Monroe, Smith, and Curry so these are the names we should be deciding between. Personally, I would like us to draft Curry but if he is already off the board we should take one of the top LTs and let them battle Albert for the starting spot. The “loser” would become the starting RT.

I like Crabtree or Malcolm Jenkins here

Raji is clearly the best player on the board, but Seattle really sucked in passing yards on both sides of the ball. If you weigh their needs higher, I think you have to consider one of these guys.
