Was it McDaniel or Cassel?

Was McDaniel's coaching what brought out the best in Cassel?  Or was Cassel just a star waiting for his chance?

"Last year, as an offensive coordinator in New England, he lost maybe the greatest quarterback in football (Tom Brady, to a season-ending knee injury). Then he turned a backup who hadn't started a game since high school into one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Josh is not frightened to go to the bench, if he has to."

Most of the time a good coach puts a marginal player in a good position to succeed.  I have to think Cassel's success was more McDaniel's coaching than Cassel's ability.

jcox is right.

There are many players on the team. Those players need coaching but the also have to use their abilities. So it is a combination of both the player and his coaching.

Neither

It was Bellichick.

Though I hope Cassel will turn out to be a good QB, I don’t have high expectations.

nothing to worry about Nanz

Cassel is going to have an awesome season, throwing for 3500+ with a 65% completion rating.

mcdaniels wanted

cassel pretty bad, he was willing to give up a young qb coming off his 1st pro bowl…that says a little something to me

I think people have a ridiculous view of "coaching"

You see….coaching does not just exit you once the coach leaves…You have still been coached by that person. That is like saying once you leave school your education is gone….

Best example is Joe Montana…he left the 49ers and Bill Walsh but he had been taught how to be a QB by that man…

In Cassel’s case, he has been coached by the best coach of our generation and learned behind arguably the best QB of our generation…ill take that…

I disagree........

I think you could have put just about any QB in New England and he would have won 11 games. Even Thiggy could have.

Sorry to tell you, but that is not true...

It really makes no sense to credit a coach for a players success and then expect the coaching to not last with him to the next situation….

You can credit the supporting cast…But was it the supporting cast that scrambled out the pocket and threw a perfect pass to tie the Jets game? No that was Cassel…(KCGold im sure can give more examples)

I am also looking forward to your explanation as to why McDaniels wanted Cassel in Denver (and other teams) if he is just the product of a supporting cast. Was the Pats O-Line, RBs and WRs offered in the deal and I just didnt know?!? No, it’s because they saw his progress through the season and they know he can be a star with good coaching (the kind that doesn’t leave you when out of its immediate presence)

OK........

My explanation as to why Mcdaniels wanted Cassel is simple Jay Cutler sucks, he locks on to his WR’s throws to many INT’S and is a big baby. Is that good enough for ya? Tyler had TD passes dropped in the end zone or on the field that could have been game winning, passes that MOSS or WELKER wouldnt have dropped! He made one nice play and he’s god , did he catch the ball too?

good coaches can make bad teams good...whereas

Great players don’t convert a bad team into a great team.

would make our entire team better

But...

They also dont revert to Bad Players when they leave….

The point is he has recieved good coaching…and is a good player for it

i agree...

but what’s that analogy about not being greater than the sum of all the parts…I think that may apply (a little).

by kc571 on Mar 17, 2009 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course coaching had something to do with his success.

Both Cassel & Brady had an opportunity that most highly drafted QB’s never get. Spending a couple seasons holding a clipboard learning about pro football from the best. From that point the only thing that is left is to go out on the field and prove yourself, and Cassel did that last year. It has to be a little of both. If you’re all talent you’re Mike Vick, If you’re all coaching, you’re Chad Pennington. Which is OK, but a combination of the two can be great.

Yes...

My arguement is just that good coaching doesn’t leave you…it changes you…

McDaniels man

he’s going to make Denver a nightmare yo

There are no stupid questions just stupid people

Not sure...

The difference would be that Cutler was Shanny’s guy so he probably got babied bye him…And McDaniels comes in with the “Patriot Way” that everyone is a piece in a machine and i guess it didnt sit well that Cutler was going to have to be a football player instead of a deformed looking prince…
