Chiefs Fans Go on Record: Matt Cassel or Jay Cutler?

Jay-cutler_medium Cassel_medium

Yes, Kansas City Chiefs fans. I know we've been talking about Matt Cassel and Jay Cutler ad nauseum but I wanted to get some definitive numbers on what you guys thought about the two.

Since Jay Cutler's recent request to be traded was reported (and Denver head coach Josh McDaniels' desire for Matt Cassel), I've been wondering how many of you would choose the Denver QB over our current QB Matt Cassel.

If you could trade Matt Cassel for Jay Cutler right now with no strings attached, would you do it? Would you keep Cassel?

Who would you want as the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs?

To the people who said Cutler

you can “cutler” your throat for wanting a pansy prima donna cancer on the Chief team.

I go cutler don't get me wrong i like

cassel nice story and all but lets get one thing straight cutler is a everyday starter he walked into the nfl as a starter and he is doing pretty well . Ya he is a gun slinger but the guy is one of the top qbs in the league and he has a cannon, I go cutler . And another thing if he so happens to get traded which i dont think he does, but if he does the team that gets this guy will instantly be a contender .The guy balls and the whole cry baby thing its more to me like . Give me some respect .The guy lead his offense and they were not a joke they were ranked pretty high for a reason if you step in to his shoes its like why would you want to trade me for a back up .I get why he is pissed off I would be to.

I hate Cutler. Having swagger isn’t a bad thing. Being a pain-in-the-ass pansy crybaby is. He’s Phillip Rivers the 2nd. I don’t want those kind of people.

I understand what your saying saint

the thing is though its like he knows hes good and he shouldent even be in the conversation as being on the trade block for no reason. When you have a qb on your hands that is as good as he is how can you not be mad he wants to be a bronco but they said they were looking at diff options . It has nothing to do with the team hes not a T.O or anything he is just up in arms like do you know who you have as your qb? do you know what type of offense you have here ? I understand cutlers pain.

I can sympathize with it

but his crappy attitude and his agent is blowing this ordeal out of proportion (which I’m thankful for). He’s young and dumb, which equates to his mouthiness. Once he realizes he’s not gods gift to football and that he’s not done anything to get him into Canton, maybe he’ll shut up and go to work. As of right now, he’s being a prima-donna.

And dont get me wrong I like cassel

but cassel is no cutler. And another thing cassel to me is just a new and improved thigpen in my opinion this guy can take the ball under center has a little more experience maybe he went to a bigger college. But at the end of the day he is just a back up who proved he could start great story cutler was drafted as the guy the guy that would take over as a starter not a back up.

But as a QB, I think he is and will be better than Cassel…

PT who ya foolin?
Cutler looked very accurate.

Cutler should be on target getting some rhythm with Walker and Scheffler.

and Stafford is in the Cutler mold,

Trading Cutler would be a terrible move

I wouldn’t be moving Cutler for anything less than 3 first rounders…

Cutler should have an outstanding career.

Especially when you consider Cutler’s likely to throw for 400 yards LOL.

What sort of nefarious Broncos fan would post these quotes on a Chiefs site? Oh, oh no, say it ain’t so prime.

Perhaps the most honest one:

I still want Cutler, though.

If you voted Cutler you don't watch football

Cutler is the next Brett Favre, he makes stupid gunslinger mistakes and that crap won’t fly in KC. Matt Cassel is a lot more intelligent and a lot more accurate.

Check the interception rankings. Jay Cutler stands second in most interceptions only next to the overrated Brett Favre. While Casse sits pretty with a little more than half of Cutlers interceptions.

Brains or Talent?

Cuntler may have a tad bid more talent then Cassel, but IMO Cassel will make the better decisions under preasure. Im sure that as Cassel gets some playing time , his skills will polish up and he will far outshine Cuntler.

Neither.

I voted neither, and that’s because I’d prefer to see us trade Cassel for the #12 overall pick as was rumored to be offered for him when he was still in New England. We can go with Thigpen and a 4th/5th rounder at QB for this year if it buys us the #12 pick in the draft.

If we did that, we’d have turned our second round pick into the #12 plus Mike Vrabel. That would be one of the best trades of all time.

Cutler does nothing for me. Cassel’s pretty good, but not great. The #12 pick in the draft could be better than either of them, though at a different position. Pick up another building block at #12 to go with our #3 overall pick, and get a QB with upside in the 4th or 5th round. Thigpen should be decent next year, not all that much worse than Cassel, especially if that #12 was a good offensive player.

I have to admit, having Curry and Maualuga would be dominating.

but we need a QB like Cassel, plus how would the Pats look at us if we trade away Cassel after they likely gave us a deal.

I never said it was good business. Players are cattle in the meat market of the NFL. It doesn’t matter who you are, you’re trade-able for the right price. I’d send Cassel packing for 2 first round picks this year and next. It’s not nice, and it may not be right, but that’s just the way it is.

Cassel wasn't a free agent

There’s no reason you need to permanently keep a guy just because you traded for him. Some guys get cut after they get traded for, so what, it’s part of the business.

The bottom line is that the Patriots made the move with us so that they could get cap room as soon as possible. They’ve made a bunch of new additions already with the cap room they cleared. Clearing Vrabel was part of that cap room, and KC was the team with room that needed him, the other reported offers for Cassel didn’t include Vrabel.

These other teams like Tampa and Denver tried to get in on the deal after it was agreed to, and New England didn’t want to take it off the table and start over again and try to hammer out another deal, and risk it falling through, because they already had targets that they were ready to go after with that cap room.

But there’s no reason in the world KC couldn’t trade Cassel if we wanted to. There’s nothing “dirty” about it at all. Would you feel differently if it was a 3-way deal at the time? But there was no time to arrange that from New England’s perspective, because they wanted that deal done so they could go after their targets before they got away.

I agree with the others that Pioli really likes Cassel (hopefully not to a fault) and most likely wouldn’t trade him for the 12th pick. But I sure would, and that’s what the poll is asking.

That would be a BIG turnaround in the linebacker corp

we’d go from DJ, Ginger, and >insert name of asshat here<

DJ, Maualuga, Curry

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by PVChiefsfan on Mar 16, 2009 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and...

if Curry’s gone, we trade down for another mid-first and a 2nd.

That all sounds great and I’d support it, but I think Pioli truly saw something in Cassel. The guy goes 8 years without playing the game. He comes out cold and puts out top 10 numbers all season. There’s gotta be something there.

by IISaiNtII on Mar 16, 2009 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How Can You Be Sure?

What makes you think it was Moss and Welker doing all the work? Isn’t it possible that Moss and Welker were benefitting from Tom Brady tossing them the rock and not the other way around? Who was Jabar Gaffney before he came to NE? Granted, Moss had a career before NE but he wasn’t lighting things up in Oakland when he was there. The jury is obviously still out on Cassel but good recievers don’t get the ball even if they are open if there is no one to throw it to them.

Paddy

by Patrick Allen on Mar 16, 2009 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because New England

was using a spread offense and focusing on the short throwing game relying on their RECIEVERS to get yards after the catch… which they did. They also utilized play-action passing quite a bit.

The Chiefs and NE basically had to retool their offenses in teh same manner last season, for the same reasons; to give their new starting QB’s the best chance to succeed. New England had the better supporting cast on both sides of the ball to be able to keep the team winning, whereas we know what happened to the Chiefs.

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

you’re basically saying that Pioli got swindled into trading for a piece of junk…a piece of junk he had evaluated in college and the last few years in the pros.

by PVChiefsfan on Mar 16, 2009 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I'm not saying Pioli got swindled.

I’m not saying the Chiefs got a steal of a trade either though.

Cassel had notably better weapons to throw to than Thigpen in Moss/Welker vs. our Gonzalez/Bowe. Cassel and the Patriots used the spread with a short passing game with the intent for the receivers to get yards after the catch, much like the Chiefs did with Thigpen, Gonzalez, and Bowe. In fact, Wes Welker led the league for YAC, with Randy Moss coming in ranked 17th in the AFC. Bowe ranked 2nd in the league for dropped passes with 13 attributed to him. In YAC, Moss totaled 358 YAC, while Bowe racked up 396 YAC. A 38 yard difference. Welker’s 758 YAC almost DOUBLES Bowe’s YAC. Bowe was also tied for 4th in the league for passes not caught… tied with Terrel Owens. I think it’s fairly safe to say that Cassel’s supporting cast of wide receivers helped him achieve his success last season.

The Pats also had the 10th ranked defense which would help an ailing team (like the Chiefs) incredibly.

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

by IISaiNtII on Mar 16, 2009 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, you're giving Cassel yards his receivers got AFTER CATCHING

The ranking goes like this in YAC for QB’s:
———————————————————————
 1 Matt Cassel NE – 2116

 14 Tyler Thigpen KC – 1101
———————————————————————-

But I suppose that doesn’t matter because Cassel was throwing it to himself and blocking for himself; from the shotgun.

Cassel vs. Cuttler

I think we mostly agree that Cassel is better than Thigpen. The argument was, is he better than Cutler?

Paddy

by Patrick Allen on Mar 16, 2009 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they're pretty close

but Cassel has the size to be able to take snaps under center better than Thigpen, so by default I think he’s better suited to be the QB.

The original question is would you take Cutler over Cassel, and to that, I say no. I’d rather have a guy who’s willing to work and doesn’t have a big head as opposed to the 180 degree difference Cutler is.

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

by IISaiNtII on Mar 16, 2009 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So what then?

You’re saying Cassel doesn’t give us much over Thigpen and that basically you think we could’ve better spent our 2nd round pick. Alright, I’m listening. What would’ve been ideal to you then?

by ChiefsDude on Mar 16, 2009 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No,

We needed another option at QB, and I’m happy with the Cassel trade, but I think the actual value vs. perceived value is being overplayed due to him having been franchised.

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

by IISaiNtII on Mar 16, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you are comparing Bowe to TG, there is no comparison.

Gonzo caught a bunch of passes last year that most receivers wouldnt have even gotten a hand on. They may have been catches but they looked like shit coming off of Thigpens arm. The difference is Gonzo is a stud and can catch everything thrown in his direction. Bowe still needs some work.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Mar 16, 2009 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am so tired of this argument

We have Bowe, Gonzo, and LJ. I am not saying that Bowe is Randy Moss but, we have some pretty legit weapons too.

My thoughts exactly

I posted this earlier on Red Zone. Here’s my thoughts:

We all know we grossly underpaid for Matt.

The day of the signing (Feb 28), before it was anounced what the Chiefs gave up, PFT reported on Sportingnews.com that “It’s easy to assume that the Chiefs gave up the No. 3 overall pick in the draft” (see Arrowhead Addict blog)

A few weeks before the trade Floyd Reese, the Patriots Senior Football Advisor said this about Cassel’s market price, “It would have to be multiple choices and very high choices to get Cassel. Two first-rounders, or a one and a two and a three … It’ll be something very, very expensive.”

During the same time-frame NFL Personnel Executive Mike Lombardi said, “"Whatever the Giants gave up for Eli has to be the market,”
(By the way- The Giants gave up their 4th overall and 3rd round pick in 2004 and a 1st and 5th in 2005 for the right to the Chargers top overall pick.) -See the March 1st blog on Arrowhead Pride for the above points of ref.

Now here’s why I bring this up… McDaniels has tipped his hand. He wants Cassel with an unbridled passion deep enough to cause a pretty nasty stink up in Denver. Cutler isn’t going to be on the team next year. He wants out.

Soooooooooooo…. if we are given the opportunity to take advantage of Denver’s mess (and I’m excited about Cassel being in Red-and-Gold, but everything has its price) do we take the opportunity to buy low and sell high?

Several options open up…
1. Obviously we could trade for Cutler.
2. We could be part of a 3 way trade where we pick up MULTIPLE picks (see the expected market price on Cassel above) and Cutler goes to another team. We’d end up with multiple 1st (Denver picks 12th), probably get our 2nd back and probably more in later rounds or early 2010 picks.

2a. We pick up Stafford or Sanchez with our 3rd overall and Orakpo with our 12th overall. (or something similar)
2b. We get Curry with our 3rd overall and Josh Freeman with our 12th overall.
2c. We pick up Curry and Orakpo (or something similar, maybe an OT with one of those picks?) and we ride with Thiggy one more year and pick our franchise QB with next years rich stock. (Especially if the trade comes with early 2010 picks)

All this news coming out of Denver makes me ask, “Exactly how bad does McDaniels want Cassel NOW?”

by Johnny_U on Mar 16, 2009 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what

I was thinking. I’m glad we have Cassel, but we could have the opportunity to trade for a capable QB and extra draft picks. If I had to choose straight up between Cassel or Cutler I would probably take Cassel. But the question is would I rather have Cassel than Cutler AND additional first-day picks? Based on how terrible our team was last year, I’d have to say take the Prima Dona and the extra picks.

by Chiefs4Life on Mar 16, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Take Cutler

then trade him away too for more picks!

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

by IISaiNtII on Mar 16, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Only if you think Thigs is the man

I think Cassel and Cutler are both upgrades compared to Thigpen, but I think Thigpen may be a better QB than most of the scrubs in this year’s draft. If we traded off Cassel and Cutler for picks we had better be sure Thigpen can be the long term answer or hope for a losing season to get a franchise QB in next year’s draft. I’d rather have a winning season now.

by Chiefs4Life on Mar 16, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Cutler is a good QB but...

I think Cassel is the smarter of the two. Cassel seems to be cautious with the ball where Cutler hones in on one target (Brandon Marshall) and lets it go no matter what the coverage is. I’ll stick with our guy.

You people are very optimistic

about Cassel. Cutler has a ton more talent than Cassel. I think we can all agree on this. Not only that, but he’s got a lot more experience than Cassel. We’ve seen Cutler without a supporting cast.

We’ve seen Cassel for one season, on a team that went 18-1 the year before. Hell, Damon Huard had a season where his TD/Int ratio was 11/1 and he was working with a lot less.

I hate the guy, but the obvious choice here is Cutler, because you at least know you’re getting a franchise QB. Cassel could end up the better QB, but he also has a pretty big chance of not working out in 2 or 3 years.

Given what he has done to the Broncos team as a whole – whether or not he was in the right – I would not want someone with that kind of attitude put to task of leading this team. Let someone else have him.

This on going saga says Cutler’s really is not interested in being a good leader or a man. Cutler is not showing why he should get a fat contract from anyone and be the future of the team (Broncos or anyone else). His talent is wasted on him.

There's always next week,,, and when we run out of weeks, there's always next year!

Before the latest stink

Cutler was considered a good team leader. Let’s put it this way, when Trent Green was here everyone thought he was the picture perfect leader. But when we started preparing a guy to replace him, he threw a big stink and was traded away. Cutler is going through the same process. He didn’t destroy the Broncos, the Broncos imploded of their own accord.

he just wanted to start somewhere, and asked nicely to be let out. The error of the last GM’s ways was what cause the media circus that followed.

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

That may be

but the fact remains that previous to this spat Cutler was considered a burgeoning leader by the Denver fans and media. I think in the case of Broncos v Cutler both sides dug their heels in too early and made some egregious media foe pas. Cutler has played well enough to expect to be the starter and the initial media reports were that he was surprised and hurt by the trade rumors, not that he was storming around Denver looking for a fight with the management. That happened after the management lied to him about trying to trade him. I don’t blame them for trying to improve the team, but think they could have communicated their reasons and plans better.

(...continued)

…not saying he’ll never win a championship, but he has A LOT of growing up to do before it happens.

yes

to clarify I’m speaking about Cutler. The “Cassel” in the subject line is refering to my vote.

Even though i voted for Cutler

I wouldnt ever want him as QB of my team. He may be better than Cassel right now but thats only because he has more experience. Give Cassel a year or two and I think he has the potential to be an awsome QB.

+1

I also have to say that Cassel has a much better story. To come out and light it up the way he did after not playing for such a long time really says a lot about his ability and his “team first concept”. He has shown that he is not a complainer. he waited for his opportunity to show himself and when the time came, he played great. He is an excellent character guy and I think he will be a great team leader.

And he conceded his starting spot on the event of a Tom Brady return

before he knew he was getting traded. He said something to the effect of “This is Toms team. I’ll continue to prepare like I always do when he comes back.”

I don’t like big-headed asshats like Cutler.

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

Remember

how much of a hard on Denver fans had for Cutler when they still had ol’ Jake the snake plummer playing for them. It just shows they have stupid fans too.

by Grand Master A on Mar 16, 2009 12:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I would rather have Jake if I were them.

He was the winningest QB in the league when things went sour with Denver.

No matter who you prefer
it is nice that Denver is on record about their desire for Cassel.
KC has him they don’t.
It also shows that there is discontent in the Donkey barn.

Yep. Im done with this thread.

But, I want everyone to know, I am completely on the Cassel bandwagon. I think Cutler is a wuss.

There are many good points here.

People that go to Vanderbilt have to be pretty smart. What the hell happened to Cutler? He’s not smart enough to shut up and show what he’s worth by his actions?

I’m also tired of this backup BS. Cassel had the guts to go to a school where he would have to compete for the job. He was beaten out by Leinert at USC and never got another shot because Leinert didn’t get hurt and played well. Had Matt been named starter his success would have equaled Leinert’s. There was a helluva team around the qb there.

Tom Brady is a future HOFer and was firmly entrenched in his spot. Matt learned and waited for something good to happen to him. Brady went down and Cassel did a really good job.

Pioli has seen this kid for 4 years or so, and knows EXACTLY what he has. A damn good QB with a good head on his shoulders. Cutler is a great talent, but he’s proven to be an effing RETART.

Cassel

I was on record a long time ago with Cassel. So I am staying with it…

How many "sure things" have we seen in the draft????

Cassel has 15 games starting in the NFL. That’s 15.5 games of tape that scouts and GMs have to look at. Forget the “potential” of a line backer core like curry, maualuga, and DJ and realize that we have no idea whether or not they can play, we know Cassel can play.

And I’m gonna stick with the guy who watches more tape than any one else, Mel Kiper Jr. who says Cassel is a considerate upgrade over Cutler. I’m on board and ready to watch Cassel go to work…

Go Chiefs!!!!!!

Well considering the fact their coach wanted Cassel over Cutler...

…says a lot I think. While McDaniels would be more comfortable with a guy he coached in New England, I don’t think McDaniels is trying to set up a blockbuster, three team trade if he thought Cutler was the better QB straight up. Plus, I think it’s clear Cutler has little to no leadership qualities after his diva act he has been perorming these past few weeks.

I hope Cutler gets traded out of the AFC West….. it’d be great for the Chiefs!
