And with the #2 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Mock Draft, the St. Louis Rams Select...
![]() |
Baylor OT Jason Smith |
Lanier63 with the pick...
It was my opinion that last year, as good as Chris Long is going to be, I think the Rams should have taken an offensive tackle to bolster their line for the future. As we know now, they did not have plans to keep Orlando Pace and having a tackle last year would have set them up with a second year player this coming year. Other needs could have been addressed in this draft and the team could have had a better foothold on its rebuilding efforts.
More from FF Toolbox:
Smith remains one of the top three or four tackles in the 2009 draft. In fact, if anything, Smith has moved up to the first or second best tackle prospect in this class. Depending on who you talk to, Smith is right in the mix with Michael Oher, Andre Smith and Eugene Monroe. Those four will almost certainly be the top four offensive tackles taken, but which order they will go is still up for grabs.
Previous pick: LB Aaron Curry
Next pick: #3 Kansas City Chiefs (TonyG88)

And the Kansas City Chiefs are on the clock! TonyG88 is up next, picking for the Chiefs.
I like the pick of Jason Smith by the Rams. It makes a lot of sense to choose one of the top left tackles in the draft when your 7-time Pro Bowler LT was recently let go. The only argument I would have is possibly picking OT Eugene Monroe over Smith. I like Monroe's experience over Smith's.

The Rams Didn't Really Have A Choice
They had the same needs as the Chiefs and the only offensive tackle rated that high in the draft was Jake Long, who wasn’t available to them (Ryan Clady was projected much lower). They had to go BPA and they felt that was Chris Long.
It’s easy to say in hindsight that they should have drafted a tackle instead, but with the knowledge the teams had at the time last year, Long or Dorsey were the only ones who made sense. Frankly, I wish they’d taken Dorsey, since he’s apparently not a fit for what the Chiefs are running any more.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

Chris Long wouldn't have fit either
he’s never rushed the passer as a stand up OLB in a 3-4, and he’s pretty small to try to play DE in a 3-4
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

As for Dorsey
I am confident that Pendergast/Haley/Pioli will find a way to effectively use him – If he can’t play NT in a 3-4 (which I think he can), we’ll figure something out – you don’t just dismiss a guy who many thought to be the best player in the 2008 draft.

I Agree With This Pick
The Rams o-line has been a disaster for the last two years. If the Lions take Smith, then the Rams will take Monroe.

Which do you like better?
Monroe’s experience vs. Smith’s upside?

The fact that Smith
sort of came out of nowhere troubles me a bit.

Me too
All the upside in the world would still make me nervous in the Top 5…

Yeah
And it’s Baylor and it’s an Art Briles passing offense. Not sure how much the offense is masking deficiencies wtih him. But then he appears to have all the necessary tools and skills and he was impressive this year. Guess we’ll see.

Actually I have one more comment about choosing him
and I will post it after the Chiefs pick :)

Good Question
There was no going wrong with Smith or Monroe with this pick. Would have picked Jason Smith, also, if I was doing the Rams, too.

Tough One
I’d be happy with either, personally…although Al Groh knows how to coach linemen (Monroe, Albert, Ferguson) so I’d probably be more in favor of Monroe than Smith. Unless Monroe does have bad knees.

Solid pick for the Rams
Smith is more athletic than Monroe and in playing on the turf in St. Louis, you dont want to take a chance with Monroe who has had knee trouble in the past.

I like J. Smith
I think we could plug him in at right tackle, thus keeping Albert at left tackle. The other tackles on the board would require us to move Albert, which I am against unless its a move to LG. So if Curry is gone I think Chiefs should go J.Smith or Raji, DT BC.

I'm not sure we would draft Smith at #3
and then make him a RT – he’d immediately be the highest paid Right Tackle in the league* without ever having played a single down of professional football…that doesn’t sound too wise.
*(except for teams with left-handed QB’s…they don’t count)
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

Christ Almighty
Never in the NFL draft have I seen someone jump the board like Smith has. When this season began his name was next to Loadholt’s on various boards, but he’s gone from second round material to 1st round material and now in the discussion for #1. Quite impressive
