Curry sounds too excited to be a Lion

http://www.freep.com/article/20090315/SPORTS01/903150423/1049/SPORTS01/Peterson+trade+excites+possible+No.+1+draft+pick+Aaron+Curry

"Actually, I'm very excited about (Peterson), being that he's going to be a perfect Sam linebacker," Curry said in a phone interview. "Ernie Sims is going to be a great Will (weak-side linebacker) and I just have the opportunity to play the Mike. That Mike position is always a position that I always looked at at Wake Forest that I wanted to play but just never was allowed to really just play it 400 snaps (a season)."Acquiring Peterson appears to end the Lions' need for drafting an outside linebacker with the top pick. But Curry is considered versatile enough to play in the middle -- Lions coach Jim Schwartz has called him "multidimensional" -- and widely thought to be the draft's safest pick.

First, I don't  like the posturing to be the number 1 pick.  Secondly, why would the Lions draft someone ( a LB) that high, and aske him to change positions already?  One would think that if you are spending that high of a pick, you want that person to be a playmaker at his chose position.  I for one hope Stafford has a great pro day, and the Lions can't pass him up.

Here's a scenario to chew on though.  Say Stafford drops to us.  I would think we'd have to trade out.  That would have to be our 3rd pick exit strategy if Curry didn't fall to us.

I'm not sold on moving Albert.  He was fine last year.  We got lucky drafting a him out of position, and moving him.  Why mess with that luck.

I don't mind the posturing so much

It means more money to him and is quite an honor to be #1.

But agreed on the moving positions part. The Lions can NOT fail on this pick. It needs to be a homerun.

I think we have to go Maualuga

He’s the best 3-4 ILB in the draft. It wouldn’t make sense but we have to take Curry if he’s there just because we’d look like fools if we took Maualuga instead of Curry. I think PIoli is trying to trade down to 10 or 11 to take Maualuga within proportion

I sure hope that's right

It makes sense and there are some good logical potential trading partners out there that could make this work. An extra pick or two sure would help.

We almost have to have a second round pick back, hopefully rather early if possible.

Maualuga is overrated

He is not good in coverage and he is not good at getting to the QB, In my opinion both Cushing and Matthews are better than him as well as Laurenitis

by GracieKal on Mar 15, 2009 12:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Seriously?

have you watched a single USC game? Maualuga is the reason why Cushing and Matthews look so good, shoot he even makes Moala look good too. Maualuga frequently takes full backs and offensive linemen on so that his mates can make the play. Cushing is the worse of all of them he keys off of Maualuga taking on blocks and uses his speed to get into the backfield untouched… Seriously look at Matthews’ and Cushing’s highlight reels … Ask Texas Chief about him he could probably convince you better than I could

Displaced Trojans Fan

I have been a fan of USC and the Chiefs as long as I can remember. Manaluga was the cornerstone of the backers, and is a cut above Cushing (shown by the fact that when Manaluga was out a game Cushing filled in for him). Manaluga can get after the QB. I am not saying he is the next comming of Lawrence Taylor. But comparing him to Laurenitis is like comparing Tyler Hansbrough to Michel Beasly. The Weakest part of Manaluga game is just filling holes (see the example of the Organ state Game). He is always trying to make a play. The only issue i see with drafting Aaron Curry (if he is still on the board) the three DL need to play at a high level consistently. If the OL do not have to double team or is able to push your DL around you are in deep trouble. You can have the 4 greatest linebackers in the game, but if you DLs are getting pushed around every run will go for 4+ yards.

I think Rey M. is gonna be a beast

I’m all for it, but definitely not at #3 overall.

If we can't trade down

Don’t we get the BPA where we need him.
Kinda mixing metaphors.
If we had two Pro Bowl Tackles would you draft a third because of BPA?
If we had Zero corners wouldn’t you grab one 5 picks ahead of grading because you need TWO?
We need an ILB and an OLB and an Strongside End on “D”.
We need a Center and possibly RT and a WR? on “O”.
A PK/KR and possibly Kicker in Special Teams.

I actually prefer the mixing of metaphores

It makes much better sense than going all out one way or the other. Best player available at position of need. BPA@PON

That way we won’t do what the Lions have done over and over again.

Finding someone willing to move up to #3 for Stafford would be highly unlikely

Not because Stafford isn’t worth the pick (I think he is) but because there simply aren’t a lot of teams that are desperate for a QB early in the draft.

Now that the Chiefs have Cassel, the next teams that might be looking to spend big money on a QB prospect are Jacksonville at #8 (Depending on how they feel about Garrard) San Francisco at #10. And in reality, both of those teams might decide they are OK with what they have and not take him when he’s there.

If neither of those two teams take him, you can realistically see him falling to the Jets at #17 before you get to a team that really is desperate for a QB.

So its not that Stafford isn’t worth the #3 pick, but there simply aren’t a lot of teams that will be looking for a 1st round QB in the top half of the draft.

I hope the Lions don't take him.
Secondly, why would the Lions draft someone ( a LB) that high, and aske him to change positions already?

Remember, Gun is their DC now. :)

Isnt that what we would be doing?

If we drafted Curry at 3 wouldn’t we move him Inside just like the Lions would?

by kingshunter on Mar 15, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty much everyone does it.

DE’s get changed to 34 LB and vice versa. QB’s get drafted to play receiver. TE’s get used in pass situations on the offense. LB’s come in and play FB. Lots of players have been drafted from college to play a different position in the pros. THat isn’t very bothersome to me.

if Gun has his way...

They will draft Curry. I still think they will take Stafford.

It's unpredictable, as they say......

…..what would I do if I was The Detroit GM. If not Stafford, like Miami last year, they should want to build their offensive line. So, personally, I believe Curry would be a bad decision for them. They should take one of the OT’s.

Umn

the Head Coach in St. Louis is one of the greatest defensive minds in the NFL. Although Detroit may not be Curry’s stop, St. Louis may be

I would be absolutely astonished

If St Louis didn’t draft an OT with their pick.

by ChiefDJ on Mar 15, 2009 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that would be crazy two tackles in a row

but it seems like it’s going to happen… just saying don’t count out the unreasonable at the top of the draft.

my thoughts after reading my own post

1. Detroit may be keeping their cards close to their vest. It would make sense not to broadcast who they’re going to pick.. We’ll find out soon enough, because I’m sure they’re going to start negotiating with someone.

2. Would Gunther go above and beyond in taking someone that the Chiefs may covet?

by kc571 on Mar 15, 2009 4:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Of course, Gunther should take Curry if that's what Detroit wants.

Gunther has faults but he seemed to always want to do the best for whichever Club he’s on.
Is anyone playing their cards closer than Pioli?

by Steve_Chiefs on Mar 15, 2009 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are they already in

negotiations with him, sounds like it is a foregone conclusion he is a Lion.

Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!

Sorry but

I say even if Curry is available at #3 we use him as trade bait.

I like Curry and I wouldn’t be super upset if they picked him at number 3, but it seems to make more sense to trade down to 10-15 to get Manaluga and our 2nd round pick back.

Question for anyone. Does Curry leverage us better in terms of trading our number 3 pick in this scenario?
