But in the 4-3 "under" front, like the Cardinals use as their base defense, which looks similar to the 3-4 to the naked eye, the biggest difference is in the outside linebackers. The strong-side linebacker is still outside the tight end. But the other outside guy — the Cardinals call this player their "Predator" — is almost always rushing the passer, although the Cards will occasionally drop him into coverage to mix things up. Other differences: The nose tackle shades to the A-gap (in between the center and guard) on the tight end side, and the end on that side moves between the tackle and tight end.

Very good read on the 2008 Arizona Cardinals defense. A relevant article now that Clancy Pendergast is our new defensive coordinator. It may be a glimpse into the Chiefs' defense of the future. H/T to Chiefs Planet.

What would that mean for DJ?
Would they play DJ the Mike, given his inability to shed tackles? Would Vrabel play the Sam, hoping we could get Curry to play the Predator position? The article has this to say about the Mike:
The only player in the 4-3 "under" who is left uncovered is the "Mike," or middle linebacker. In the Cardinals’ scheme, that’s usually Gerald Hayes. "That’s my thumper, more of a thick guy," Davis said, circling the capital M on his piece of paper. "In the ‘over’ front, when I was in Atlanta [2001 to 2003], we put Keith Brooking — we were actually playing an even scheme, too – but we stacked Keith right behind the three [technique] and he got to run and make plays and use his athleticism, and he made his first Pro Bowl playing behind the three."
But in this scheme Hayes, listed at 249 pounds ("or a little less than that," he admits with a wink and a smile), is the only uncovered linebacker. That means he often will be taking on 300-pound guards head on. On Sunday, it could be Steelers ORG Darnell Stapleton and his 305 pounds that will meet Hayes more than once. "You don’t think about it," Hayes says, "you just do it. You can’t worry about taking those guys on. It comes with the territory."
How would DJ do going hed up with a OG?

I don't think he'd do very well

Just watch last season
our Linebackers consistently had Offensive guards all over them like white on rice.
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

I don't think there is any way
You draft Curry to be the ‘predator.’
He’d probably be the Will (which is what Dansby played), but he could play any of the 3 LB positions in this defense. The only one that you wouldn’t put him at is the predator, which is essentially what DT was as our ‘Falcon,’
And no, I don’t think DJ will be the Mike. He could play the Sam or the Will. Not sure who the Mike would be…I don’t see him on our roster right now, remember Tracy Simien? Thats the kind of guy we need as the Mike. Curry could do it, but….I’m guessing if they’re taking a guy #3 overall, they want him to be a playmaker, and its not really a playmakers position.

Vrabel
Is the kind of guy that would probably be able to play Predator, Will and Sam. But at this age, I don’t know if you really want him as your primary pass-rusher.
So I see a bit of a problem, unless you’re going to stick Curry at the Mike (which I really doubt) you’ve got 3 guys (DJ, Curry and Vrabel) for two positions in the Will and Sam. You also have no Mike. With the current roster, its Pat Thomas…seriously.
I’m pretty certain DJ and Curry will be our starters at Will and Sam, the other two spots…totally up in the air. I think Vrabel will be a nice fit, but would be best used as a backup.
Great article, though, rec’d.

DJ
would be best at Will…you’re right about the mike – he needs to be a Simien kind of guy

after last season
giving up big runs needs to stop our line backers really did not follow the scheme this seems more complex and having to deal with more people in front of them than a 4-3

That's my point
This scheme seems best suited for Dorsey but seems ill suited for Vrabel, DJ and ??. Not sure how I feel about this.

The nice part is
it seems like Pendergast is open to a different defenses and not stuck on one particular scheme.

Just not as the MLB.

He's a natural Will
I will never understand why we put him at Sam when we drafted him
Oh that’s right, our staff were all retarts

Hali
Hali might work as the Predator, since he would almost never have to cover anyone and would rush the passer almost every time.
Curry’s not a pure pass rusher, he’s a well-rounded player who can cover and play the run as well.

agreed
If you read the full article he says that Arizona used B. Berry (who is currently a FA) as the Predator. He’s more of a DE then a LB and is similar in size to Hali.
Ten sacks in a season! For crying out loud that's what I used to average per game using DT in Tecmo Bowl!

Pendergrass as D Cordinator
Anybody else unsure about Haley’s pick for D Coordinator besides me?

it could work out if we make some moves on d and help the guy out
i stated earlier if we get some good players or if he can groom some guys to be good he might look good but it depends if they help him out or make us the greatest show on turf 2

Orakpo
Sounds like Orakpo would be perfect for the Predator position. If we can’t get Curry, he might be an option.

Go hurt yourself
jk but we’d have to trade down for sure to look somewhat intelligent drafting Orakpo

I agree
he’s a bit of a reach at three, but most mocks have him going in the top ten so we wouldn’t be able to go too far down and still get him. Don’t get me wrong, I’d MUCH rather get Curry, but if he’s off the board and Pioli thinks OL is deep enough to get help later in the draft then I wouldn’t have a problem with them taking one of the better pass rushers in the draft, especially if we could move down a few spots and pick up an extra pick or two.
