YES! Pendergast!
Ha okay, not really, but I instantly wanted to try and like this 'promotion.' As we all know, our D-coordinator will make as big of an impact as anyone else moving forward as we were, what, 31st in the league last year? Let's look at the plusses of this while we wait for Walrus Crennel.
- He is not a rookie, nor unfamiliar to running a less than whole defense
- Was able to utilize Monty Beisel somewhat effectively, at least more than we could previously.
- Darnell Dockett, Karlos Dansby, Calais Campbell, Rodgers-Cromartie. (Names I barely recognized at the start of the season and who we recognize now.)
- The Hybrid 3-4 and 4-3. The team seemed effective at LB which would help us immensely. We will test and figure out our players roles better so they maximize each role in our coming contending years
- In his first season at defensive coordinator in 2004, Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Clancy Pendergast improved the team’s overall defensive ranking from 26th to 12th. In 2005, Pendergast’s defense improved to 8th overall, the unit’s first top ten ranking since 1994 (3rd).
The above quote is from an Arizona Cards easy analysis on the Pros and Cons of Pendergast and their defense before last season started. It's a good read and says the Pros and Cons better than I could.
I wanted Crennel like you guys probably did, but this could be worse and will give us something to work with and build towards the near future.

He's had one good year.
And it was 2004, when he was working with someone else’s players.
He had a Top 10 overall defense in 2005, but was near the bottom of the NFL in points allowed even then.
This is not a good hire.
OK
He’s had one good year … when he was working with someone else’s players.
Well he’ll be working the same this year…Let’s see what happens :)
"But what do I know, I'm AP's new assclown and I’m like an empty room with a large ECHO"
Exactly
I don’t agree with it being a bad hire this early on. It’s too early, but I think that I’d rather have Herm on ESPN than on the Chiefs sidelines.
I say we see what Pendergast can do on the Chiefs sidelines. It’s not like he built this defense and then stayed on in the new org. like Krumrie ;)
Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."
"My job is not to collect talent, but to build a team. Individuals make the Pro Bowl. Teams win championships. That is our goal."—Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.
Vermeil Era
No one wants to relive it but I think we can all agree, at least it was exciting to watch.
As a fan I’d rather see a game like the 2003 Wildcard game vs the Colts than the Chiefs of the past couple years which has been grossly unwatchable.
If you go out and you’re looking for the girl to wink at you and she hasn’t winked at you before 12 she isn’t going to. You might as well go home.

I know but..
as a true football fan I find it really difficult to watch your team get handled and abused on defense. It’s sort of like getting your @ss kicked and just dealing with it until your older brother (the offense) can come out and make amends for it.
You wouldn’t hear me complaining about a playoff shootout, but we better make the most out of these day one guys, DJ, Dorsey, Hali, Turk, Tank, Flowers, and hopefully Curry or Raji.
home, of the....CHIEEEEEFS!
At least it's better than Herm ball...
where the offense gets abused all over the field so quickly that the defense gets abused just as badly as the vermeil days.
Stats, stats, stats
I think he was hired because he fits into the realm of what we are trying to do here. I didn’t hear that many people complaining when we signed Vrabel even though his numbers declined. There are an infinite amount of variables at work that determine stats each year for a player, for a coach multiple that by a thousand (infinity x 1000 = 1000 infinity, haha). In other words, he was coaching for a traditionally shitty team that never really had effective enough leadership to put them on the right track until this year. I think Clancy must have worked well with Haley in Arizona and Pioli obviously sees something in him so lets give the guy a chance before we go knocking him for statistical reasons. He may be a good leader or a just plain good coach that had a rough time. Bottom line, i believe in Pioli and Haley so i’m not ecstatic over the move but it looks better than a cover 2 coach hiring a man-to-man D coord. that likes to blitz every play. If he ends up sucking i’ll be the first one putting a for sale sign in the yard of his Johnson County home.
"A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week."
It dependes on how hands on Haley will be
with the Defense. It could also just be a waiting game until Crenell becomes more of an option.
