Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs signed quarterback Quinn Gray in an emergency situation. He played in one game for the Chiefs in 2008.

Wednesday, with their quarterback situation much more settled, the Chiefs terminated the contract of Gray.

So...

They really are looking at Brokie and Pigpen as backups. We never saw a win with Brokie so I thought they would get rid of him and stick with Gray. I guess I was mistaken.

There's no hope with dope...

Looks like Matt Cassel is going to be the starter

Chiefs released QB Quinn Gray.
Gray was only due $750,000, but new GM Scott Pioli didn’t deem the former Jaguar worth bringing to training camp. The Chiefs will roll with Tyler Thigpen, Brodie Croyle (knee surgery), and Ingle Martin behind Matt Cassel.

This is what usatoday.com is reporting and this is the link

There is a chance that Brodie Croyle could be released

On sports they said if Tyler Thigpen stays there is a chance that Brodie Croyle could end up getting released or traded

If i was the Chiefs. I would trade both of them off because they both SUCK

Dude

if Smith falls to the third, he could be an absolute STEAL of a Right Tackle in Round 3. I don’t care how bad his Pro Day was, or how many character issues he has; with his talent and ability, I have to believe SOMEBODY will grab him in round 2.

I agree he'd be a ridiculous steal

But he’s not making it to round 2, much less round 3.

Too much talent. I’ll be shocked if he gets out of the 1st half of round 1. You’re also seeing some people mention that he didn’t run any worse than the other OT prospects at the combine.

I’ll be honest, as a RT in the NFL, the guy is just about perfect. Sure he’s overweight, but he’s always been overweight. I’d stick some weight clauses in his contract, and understand he’s going to be on the big side. I watched Bama play 5+ times this year, and he consistently stood out.

There’s no point in worrying about it, b/c the Chiefs aren’t getting him, but if used correctly, and motivated properly, he’s still looking at an fine career.

Aite!

The NFL is so much better do to the parity in the league. College is all about recruiting. College is more about the Coach’s ability to recruit than it is to develop talent, scheming or game planning. You can win on talent alone in the NCAA you can’t do that in the NFL. So to quit ranting and to get on with my point. The reason the SEC dominates is due to thier ability to attract top tier talent year in and year out.

you're in denial

So … if closing the gap with the MWC and proving that you’re better than the teams that finished fourth in the ACC Coastal and the Big 12 South are worth shouting about, then have at it.

The fact of the matter is that a 5-0 postseason record will only bring the Pac-10 to .500 (17-17) versus non-conference Football Bowl Subdivision teams. That’s what happens when your winning percentage in all non-conference games during the regular season ranks ahead of only the MAC, C-USA and Sun Belt.

Even though it ended with a flourish, 2008 was far from a vintage year in the Pac-10.

by Chiefho on Mar 11, 2009 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Far from a vintage year, I agree...

yet they were still 5-0 in bowls and had the best team in the nation. The conference record versus non-con is skewed because of teams like U Dub and Dub State. But what did the conference do against alleged powerhouses Ohio State, Penn State, BYU, and Notre Dame? Kicked ass.

The quality of bowl games the conference gets is unquestionably impacted by the rampant east coast bias the media applies to their arbitrary weekly rankings.

by HIV 2 Elway on Mar 11, 2009 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I go to a Big 12 school

and am willing to say the Pac10 is a better conference. The big 12 makes it to bowl games because they spend most of the season playing against other big 12 teams which have among the worst defenses in the nation. If I had to bet on a game featuring a Big 12 team against another conference, I would usually bet on the other guy.

Makes Sense

It’s not like they were going to cut Thigpen or Croyle. Thigpen is more than a capable backup and Croyle was drafted by the team. Although he is a fragile as China, he has the tools to be a serviceable (sp). I actually liked Gray and was hoping he would stick. By the way isn’t Ingle Martin still on the team? Why? Drafting a QB

Looking back at the Patriots history they have always tried drafting QBs even when having a star onboard. I think just because we traded for Cassel doesn’t mean we wont draft a QB this year. I think it will be Cassel, Thigpen, and a rookie drafted in the middle to late rounds.

by vincent2668 on Mar 11, 2009 5:05 PM CDT reply actions

I'm perfectly fine with that idea

middle/late rounds for a qb

I just don’t think this is the year for early round qbs and was fearful of that move – until we got Cassel

I RATHER HAVE MATT CASSEL OVER THIGPEN AND CROYLE

Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen just up right suck and they proved that in 2008

Look for Matt Cassel to get the starting job with out even having to fight for it

by THE CHAMP IS HERE on Mar 11, 2009 8:51 PM CDT reply actions

Thigpen and Cassel.

You know, it’s great to say that Thigpen sucks, but I guess I’m struggling to find how you’d manage to back that up. Especially considering that he had a season that was statistically extremely similar to Cassel’s throwing to receivers that weren’t, well, the Patriots’ receiving corps, while starting less games … ?

Sure, he didn’t win as many games as Cassel did, but most of the losses could be directly laid at the feet of late-game defensive collapses, rather than Thiggy’s inability to lead the offense.

And, when you take that into consideration, it either means that Cassel sucks, too (which I’m more than willing to allow for) or that Thiggy’s not nearly as bad as you’d like to claim.

[ And, for the record, Brodie Croyle is a damn good quarterback. He’s just far too fragile for the NFL. That’s not a knock on his skills, that’s a knock on his durability. There’s a huge difference, which you seem to fail to comprehend. ]

by JacinB on Mar 11, 2009 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah they proved they sucked when thigpen came in and threw

20 touchdowns in 8 games..News Flash for Champ : Get real..He was the best qb we’ve had in there since Trent Green in 2005 and get this Thigpen is 25..

by CALIFAN1986 on Mar 11, 2009 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Thigpen is the next rich gannon

Brodie is not a damn good qb..He has not looked like a good qb yet in any game I’ve seen him play in the nfl..He’s like decent..And then gets injured

by CALIFAN1986 on Mar 11, 2009 10:21 PM CDT reply actions

Don't worry Brodie haters

He won’t be on the roster come opening day. If he has any value Pioli will get something for him, but I don’t think he does.

My guess is we draft a project in the later rounds and he’s our #3, but even if we don’t, we’ll bring someone in to ‘compete’ for the 3rd QB job, and they’ll end up beating out Croyle.

Now…I’d have rather had seen Croyle cut today, and Gray be left around to battle for the #3 spot, but I can’t really blame them for going this direction, Croyle’s younger, and its hard to make a case for keeping Quinn (30 when next year starts) as a #3 QB. On a team like ours that still has a ways to go, the #3 QB spot has to be a developmental one.

NOW, I will say, this move pretty much eliminates the posibility of trading Tyler, barring the signing of someone like Leftwich.

Now, lets go get Pace or Barnes!

by kcsno56 on Mar 11, 2009 11:21 PM CDT reply actions

I believe Croyle could be effective still

he has to bulk up, but he might have a better throwing motion then cassel, just sayin, he wouldnt have went in the 3rd round if he had no talent.

by ZachMartin2 on Mar 12, 2009 12:08 AM CDT reply actions

I think Croyle is a wash-out

bulk or not. He may have the skills and the mechanics, but he’s lacking durability. He even had injury problems in college. I’d be surprised if he ever plays in another NFL game. He is a supreme disappointment and every team in the league knows it.

Vae Victis!

by Buck'O on Mar 12, 2009 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Completely agree

I think its much more likely than not that Brodie never takes another NFL snap, at least in the regular season.

by kcsno56 on Mar 12, 2009 12:20 AM CDT up reply actions

I think

if you look at all the busts as per this post, then it kinda proves your argument wrong. When a players is chosen in the draft it’s determined by his hype and potential (ok his potential talent and impact in the league), but neither determine if he’ll succeed. Brady was taken in the bottom of round 6 (199th overall). Giovanni Carmazzi was taken at number 65, beginning of round three. If your response to that is ‘who?’ that’s my point.
