The word around Kansas City is the Chiefs could be open to moving Branden Albert, the No. 15 overall pick last year, to right tackle. The Chiefs could conceivably use the No. 3 draft pick on a left tackle. Yet, the availability of Pace could be tempting to Kansas City.

Let them compete!

If Albert can’t beat out Pace now, certainly by the time Pace is done here, he’d be ready to step in at LT

It was already widely speculated that

they would draft O-line to cover Pace’s declining production.

by Buck'O on Mar 10, 2009 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

They need two OTs

They were going to draft Jake Long last year, but he went number one. They have to draft a tackle because it wasn’t addressed last year.

This reeks of draft posturing misdirection.

Not so fast

This move still makes sense.

Basically, we have a need at LB and OT…there’s no reason to think this isn’t plausible.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 10, 2009 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with the need,

But if this is something that truly has been leaked, then I think it is just to deflect our interest in Curry or to create trade scenarios.

I’m fine with taking an LT and moving BA. Besides, he’d only be making #15 pick money at RT. I’m not against any of the angles.

If Curry goes ahead of #3, there really is no other option than an OT

If Currys gone and we no longer need a QB (theoretically) and I don’t believe for a minute Pioli’s drafting a WR at #3 overall. So an OT is about the only option left whether you really need one or not.

by ChiefDJ on Mar 10, 2009 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Or...

You trade your #3 pick for a later 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks…there’s multiple options and Pioli is known to trade for more picks…just because it’s the #3 doesn’t ultimately make those players Super Bowl winners.

There's no hope with dope...

by chrisjo07 on Mar 10, 2009 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Talking about trading the #3 pick

Is like talking about the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl next year. Its damn near the same odds.

by ChiefDJ on Mar 10, 2009 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually

A top 5 pick has been traded 4 times in the last 10 years.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 10, 2009 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

We need more draft picks...

pure and simple. That’s more than likely a reason we haven’t been active in the FA market is because we’re going to be active in the Draft and trading our #3 pick would set us up with more draft picks to choose from top talent that fit our scheme and how our team will work. You can’t fit any player in any team and expect them to become superstars. It has to be the right scheme and coaching to bring about the best talent in the players to do their jobs accurately. Pioli has been known to trade around draft picks…he’s never been in this position to have a #3 spot so if the player he wants (more than likely Aaron Curry) is gone he can trade that pick for more picks later on. It’s not completely out of the question.

There's no hope with dope...

by chrisjo07 on Mar 10, 2009 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Before calling the odds of trading out of such a pick under 10%

consider how often teams have actively marketed a top five pick. Perhaps, you’d find that its easier to get out of the top five than you think

by Sudden on Mar 10, 2009 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

That is true....

That if I was actually doing the statistics….

But no…it is not easier to get out of the top 5 than I think…

In fact those stats are skewed since it keeps getting more difficult every year those stats should not go back ten years but only recent years…

It is near impossible to trade out of the top 5…

by woodman212 on Mar 10, 2009 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

But not since '03

And we’ve had a rapid acceleration of rookie contracts at the top of the draft since then.

I agree that its possible, but really unlikely.

The only real possibility is dropping back 2-4 spots and grabbing some teams 2nd in the process.

by kcsno56 on Mar 10, 2009 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

I’d be fine taking Raji at #3 if Curry is gone.

I’m still of the opinion that he’ll be there, but if he’s gone, and we sign Pace, Raji is a fine option, and makes the 3-4 a lot more realistic to envision.

23 games

That’s how many games Pace has played in the past 3 seasons. Granted he played in 14 last year but still he has missed a lot of games due to injury.

by sexassassin on Mar 10, 2009 6:03 PM CDT reply actions

You don't sign a future HOF left tackle

to be a backup…some team who didn’t spend a 1st round pick on a LT last year will grab Pace and he’ll be a starter, making starter money.

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by PVChiefsfan on Mar 11, 2009 7:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree

He’ll be starting for someone next year, as long as he’s healthy.

Although ‘starter money’ is a very relative term. He may have no choice to sign a discounted contract full of incentives.

Like Roaf when he came here, he’s not a future HOF LT yet…he’ll need a few more solid seasons, probably another pro-bowl or two.

no way you dont sign

a guy who has been hurt the past three season and let him waltz right into the starting spot if he earns it fine but in the back of your head you have to know this guy has a history of being hurt .

by sexassassin on Mar 11, 2009 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd like to see Pace signed.

But what happens if Curry is taken #1? Do we draft another tackle and try to make a trade or just go into camp with three tackles? Do we go with Crabtree or Raji? Is Raji worth the #3 pick?

Seems like it could be a good problem to have, but only if Pace comes cheap.

by JComp11 on Mar 10, 2009 7:49 PM CDT reply actions

Have Albert play G Pace play LT and Rookie play RT

then when Pace retires move Albert back to LT and leave rookie at RT?

by A true chiefs fan on Mar 10, 2009 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah...

If we sign Pace, and Curry’s gone, we wouldn’t take an OT, Raji would be a fine choice at #3, I don’t think he’d be a reach.

If we can trade back, even better, but I don’t see it happening.

by kcsno56 on Mar 10, 2009 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I like Pace

but we’d have to sign him with an incentive laden deal, otherwise I say no.

by just a guy on Mar 10, 2009 8:06 PM CDT reply actions

Orlando?

You mean the guy who hasn’t been able to finish a season for the last three years? Come on now, we can do better than that guys. He is exactly what we are looking to avoid, a somewhat pricey player who will hardly start for us and eventually retire after being rendered completely useless. I bet the odds that the Chiefs sign him are minimal, if any.

by Ben S on Mar 10, 2009 8:29 PM CDT reply actions

I was talking about the guy

Who started 14 games last year, and gave up only 2 sacks. The guy who is an enormous upgrade over our current RT options. Also freeing up the #3 pick. The guy that would give us three years to develop a future replacement at RT, whether thats Herb Taylor, or a future draftee.

Willie Roaf started just 7 games the year before we acquired him, and Pace is only one year older.

You may be right that the chances we sign him are minimal, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be a great move.

by kcsno56 on Mar 10, 2009 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't mess with Alberts development

If we are going to draft OL with the #3 then fine AB moves to RT. But if we sign Pace, then we must make Pace play RT. Pace is 33, he won’t be doing this much longer. Why make AB get used to playing RT only then to move him back to LT in 2 yrs? AB has already proven he can be our LTOTF he should stay put.

by BeijingKCfan on Mar 10, 2009 9:58 PM CDT reply actions

+1000

Move him if and only if, we draft a LT #3 overall

Vae Victis!

by Buck'O on Mar 10, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree...

If Pace happens then he should be at RT….

Hell, willie anderson should have been last years RT…Who would he have stolen playing time from? DMac? joke…

That is why the youth movement went too far….when we overlooked upgrades that would have exchanged old for old…

by woodman212 on Mar 10, 2009 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Why not both?

I know it isn’t realistic but just a thought. Sign Pace, draft a tackle, move Albert to RG.

Monroe
Waters
Niswanger
Albert
Pace

LJ would run like a mad man and Cassel would have protection.

I really want Curry though. This was just a what if deal.

AFC West Champs in 2009? Mayyybee.

by cmpotter on Mar 10, 2009 10:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Had a similar thought

But I would have them line up:

Monroe
Albert
Waters
Niswanger
Pace

Monroe and Albert played next to each other in college and would be comfortable. Waters has played center in the past and now knows Albert better on his left side. I thought Niswanger was a better guard than center. And Pace would be an upgrade at RT over anything we have.

by tevans96 on Mar 10, 2009 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Why do you want to move Albert.?

That’s the wrong direction , I believe…I thought Albert was darn good this season as a rookie LT…Pace on the other hand has missed about 34 games or so in the last 47 ..He’s done ..don’t waste your time or money on Orlando…jmo..Why in the world would you try to fix something that isn’t broken???

by blu43 on Mar 10, 2009 10:46 PM CDT reply actions

Albert was OK

Albert played well last year but I don’t think he was great, he struggled at times at LT. I don’t want to move him for Pace but I wouldn’t mind him moving for a better younger LT.

by tevans96 on Mar 10, 2009 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions

A quick comparison between Roaf and Pace

is that they played over half their games on artificial turf. Pace with the Rams and Roaf with the Saints.
I would think that the natural grass would be a better surface for someone who had knee injuries to play on. It worked with Roaf why not give Pace a shot?

by Lvl.99 on Mar 11, 2009 3:33 AM CDT reply actions

Pace to KC?

A Security Guard in Loch Lloyd reports activity at the Shanahan home seeing two moving trucks and Shanny himself showing the house to Orlando Pace and his wife. Overheard as he was passing by was that Shanny would trade the home and two pink poodles to Pace for a future consideration of a home in Detroit in two years and a plate of nachos. Pace was non committal on purchasing the home in Detroit for Shanny. The deal apparently looked to sour as one of the poodles peed on Ms. Paces’ open toe shoes.

potter i like your thinking on the line

everyone thinks just cuz you move albert thinks he is going to be wasted we havent run a good sweep running play in i dont know how long and albert number one play was running that play in college trucking people and finishing blocks. It wouldent be a bad idea . and i would only do it if pace came cheap and we drafted a true tackle in the draft.

FOUR F'S FIND UM FEEL UM FUGUM FORGET UM.

by sexassassin on Mar 11, 2009 10:12 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think moving Albert will waste him

I just think that if you move him on a temporary basis, you stunt his development as well as the overall chemistry on the line. Don’t do it unless you have a permenant solution in mind. A huge part of success on the line comes from continuity. There’s only one way to achieve continuity. They have to play their positions and play together as a unit day in and day out.

Vae Victis!

by Buck'O on Mar 11, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree continuity is important

Its also extremely rare these days in the NFL.

I think you have to do your best to put the best 5 guys out there possible, hopefully anchored around a couple mainstays.

i agree with you bucko

i mean being together is important i guess i just get excited when i looked at his old highlights and the guy is 20 yards down the field trucking people . Thats passion that is an athletic man i wouldent mind seeing him doing that in the nfl .
