Catching up with the Chiefs in Free Agency
Will the Chiefs make a run at Igor Olshansky?
via www4.pictures.gi.zimbio.com
Here's a quick update on the free agents at positions of need for the Chiefs.
Defense
- Chris Canty (DE - 6'7", 286 lbs - 26 years old) - Originally scheduled to visit with the Redskins but was later canceled because the Redskins were "running out of money" according to Executive VP of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato. Is still in New York following a visit with the Giants even though they recently signed defensive lineman Rocky Bernard from the Seahawks. Although no deal is imminent, Canty's agent said talks are continuing and the Giants do want to sign him. He's supposedly seeking $18 million guaranteed and $8 million per year. **SI.com says it's either the Giants or the Packers. ***Signs 6 year, $42 million deal with $17.5 million guaranteed with the New York Giants.
- Antonio Smith (DE - 6'3", 274 lbs - 27 years old ) - Signed 5 year deal with the Texans.
- Bart Scott (LB - 6'2", 235 lbs - 27 years old) - Signed 6 year, $48 million deal with the Jets.
- Ray Lewis (LB - 6'1", 245 lbs - 33 years old) - Apparently the Cowboys aren't after him anymore. The Ravens are still trying to sign him after he reportedly turned down a 3 year, $24 million offer before free agency started. **The offer apparently remains on the table. It appears more and more likely he'll stay in Baltimore.
- Angelo Crowell (LB - 6'1", 243 lbs - 27 years old) - The Redskins were interested in him but not after their spending spree. No visits scheduled.
- Rosevelt Colvin (LB - 6'3", 250 lbs - 31 years old) - No sniffs from anyone after the Pats released him. He knows the 3-4 defense and represents a need but he's missed 17 games in two years.
- Igor Olshansky (DE - 6'6", 309 lbs - 26 years old) - Haven't heard a word about him. No visits reported.
Offense
- Laveranues Coles (WR - 5'11", 193 lbs - 31 years old) - Whittled his choices down to the Buffalo Bills or the Miami Dolphins and the New York Daily News speculates the smart money is on the Dolphins. Who doesn't want to sign in Miami this year it seems? **Dolphins aren't likely to pursue Coles.
- T.J. Houshmandzadeh (WR - 6'1", 197 lbs - 31 years old) - After a visit with the Seahawks and the Vikings, he is still in Minnesota. It's believed that they're talking money at this point. However, ESPN's Michael Smith reports that he will also make visits to the Bucs (who just re-signed WR Michael Clayton) and the Eagles.
- Stacy Andrews (RT/RG - 6'7", 342 lbs - 28 years old) - Signed 6 year deal with the Eagles.
- Jeff Saturday (C - 6'2", 292 lbs - 33 years old) - Signed 3 year deal with the Colts.
- Khalif Barnes (LT - 6'6", 305 lbs - 26 years old) - The Raiders have "toyed" with the idea of taking a harder look at him. Meanwhile, Barnes canceled a visit with the Saints after they resigned Jon Stinchcomb.
Chiefs Unrestricted Free Agents
- Jason Babin, Oliver Celestin, Jon McGraw, Adrian Jones, Rocky Boiman and Pat Thomas - Haven't heard a peep about any of these guys.
Chiefs Restricted Free Agents
- Jarrad Page, Jeff Webb and Rudy Niswanger - They were all tendered so I don't expect any team to be willing to part ways with the compensation packages assigned to each of them.
With the exception of a couple of names, these players are beginning to represent the second wave of free agency. The signing bonuses are dwindling so the Chiefs should take a hard look at a few of these value players.
As always, post any updates to free agency signings in the comments or the FanShots (Free agency is an important time to install the FanShot bookmark so you can post to AP from any webpage).
Any other possible free agent signings out there?

well, what about khalif barnes?
So, if the Chiefs take Curry at #3, that leaves some big holes still on the O-line. Anybody in Rd 3 that could be expected to come in and start. I know we have been told to temper free agent expectations, but the Cassel era could be over before we know it, unless we invest in the line. Seems like Barnes is the only one left.

Not sure what his deal was
Is he better than Damion McIntosh? I have no idea.

hes gotta be better than McIntosh
wheres Mark Tauscher? I wanted the Cheifs to sign him but I havent heard anything about him. Looks like he could be a cheap pickup for RT

He didn't re-sign
He’s going to test the market but doesn’t rule out a return to the Vikings. Not quite sure what kind of money he’s looking for.

11 year veteran
6 time Pro Bowler including ‘03-’07. He’s good and would definitely be an upgrade. But his age (32) might keep us from taking a hard look at him.

dont RT's last longer than left?
I’m not sure, but moving him over to RT I would think might help.

Igor
Is the one I’m still holding out hope for. We need DE’s for the 3-4, and I’m not sure we have one right now. Canty’s probably going to get more money, but I’d rather have Igor, I think he’ll hold up more over the next 4-5 years.
Would have loved Jason Brown, I know he got paid, maybe even a little over market value, but we’ve certainly got money to burn, and he’s young enough, he could have essentially wiped out that trade of the 2nd rounder.

Word
I wouldn’t have minded the Cassel trade and losing our 2nd rounder if we picked up talent equivalent to Jason Brown
by KansasCityShuffle on Mar 1, 2009 2:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
+1
Since the trade of our 2nd takes us out of the running for either Mack or Unger we really could have used Brown.

i agree guys
Brown would have been nice!!! I wish they would just say one way or another if were going 3-4!!!!!

Its done, we're 3-4
If you wait for the Chiefs to say it, you may have to wait until the preseason.
The Vrabel acquistion completely sealed it.

I hope that KC is working on signing some more free agents
I know that it is not Pioli’s way to go after big name guys unless they feel strongly about them. But I think the team needs to strongly consider going after some of the remaining quality free agent players. Just a few I feel we should consider:
Barnes or Tauscher for our new right tackle. Unless we are going O line at #3, I am not sure where we would find better talent than that. Barnes would slide over to RT just fine.
Birk is an option at center, but there will be good options to be had at a much cheaper price in the draft.
Guards seem to be at a premium, and I don’t see many great ones in the draft. This almost assuredly keeps Complainy Waters in house. Love ya Brian.
Unless we think we have enough targets for Cassel I think we should be talking to WR Nate Washington. He will stretch the field better than any player currently on the roster.
Defensive end is a position that we almost HAVE to get an upgrade, right? Or at least someone comfortable in the 3-4 scheme. Igor seems to be the perfect fit. Perhaps a draft pick used here as well?
Finally linebackers: our obvious lack of quality LBs may take a few seasons to upgrade, but there are some middle of the road guys that I think we should look at. UFA Kevin Burnett has worked out of the 3-4 and won’t break the bank. Too bad Pierre Woods is a RFA or he would be someone I can see us going after. (Ask Mangini what happens to you if you steal from the Pat’s cupboard.)
Tell me Pioli is working on master stroke #2?
