While the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs are popular sports franchises, few people are eager to move to this Midwestern city.

Man, KC came in as the #5 least popular city? That's rough.

Since I know not everyone who reads this blog resides in KC (or has even been there), let's do a quick roll call and have everyone chime in with where they're reading from.

I would move back to KC in heartbeat, if I could.

I used to live in Baltimore, then moved closer to DC. Commuting takes years of your life.

I just moved to Raleigh, NC from Columbia, MD last year. My son was born at Howard County General :) Really loved the area, but the fam and I were looking to buy a house and could afford something much, much larger down here. Haha.

I was actually just out there over thanksgiving. Stayed in a Hotel just down the street from Disney. What the hell was the name of that town? I cant remember now.. .anywho.. yea the weather is great there! I was pretty jealous! Two things that bothered me tho were the smog and all the damn people. Only time i like being in crowds is at Arrowhead!

Born and raised California

Visited KC 2 years ago on a road trip and enjoyed the BBQ, Kaufman Stadium (which unfortunately wasn’t too kind to my visiting team), the campus of KU and the Truman Library. Interested in the Chiefs primarily because of Tony Gonzalez (fellow Cal grad), but want to see the AFC West in general rise up and truly equalize the conference and league.

Ames, Iowa

Born and raised in KC, but am furthering my education in the frozen land of the north.

by Chiefs4Life on Feb 9, 2009 8:04 PM CST reply actions

That's too far north

My experience here (Ames) tells me I never want to live any further north. Looking at 15 inches of snow for 4-5 months is simply too depressing.

15 inches?!?!

by chrisjo07 on Feb 9, 2009 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

That's easy

I live in Valdez, Alaska and we got about 18-20 feet. We actually have less snow than normal. We usually get between 25-30 ft. But, I was born and raised in K.C. and has been a die-hard Cheifs fan since I was knee high.

You got that right

I’m in the Twin Cities (after moving from KC ten years ago). My first winter I looked out my office window and saw a guy drive a Chevy Suburban across a lake in January. I almost put in my notice and came back home. I love the town though (which is also on the same list). Went ice fishing last weekend.

Where From

I’m from Cherryvale Kansas. I lived in Olathe though from 1989 to 1994. Go KC

by tmed67 on Feb 9, 2009 8:19 PM CST reply actions

KC could be a world class smaller city

I am a KC native but I have lived other places. In the past 15 years I’ve also lived in Texas, South Florida, St. Louis and briefly in the UK. Currently I live in Los Angeles but still follow the Chiefs.

This is an interesting topic for me as I am currently thinking about moving back to KC since it’s a much more affordable city to live in. I think there is a bad perception of KC nationally — people seem to think the town is just a bunch of outhouses. I think it’s exciting the see the Downtown area making a comeback. However there are many things KC could improve on and I would love to see some real leadership. KC will never been New York or LA due to it’s size, but there is no reason why KC can’t be a world class smaller city if the city government would have some vision. I wish KC people were way less suburban. Personally I hate the suburbs and would love to see KC offer a lot more culturally stimulating venues for its citizens. Casinos are not culture. KC desperately needs a better mass transit system.

The people are great as is the food. I would love to see the people of KC demand great things from their city leaders. And I scratch my head as to how you guys voted that imbecile in as your mayor. That guy has got to go.

by Rev. Slappy on Feb 9, 2009 8:20 PM CST reply actions

I think KC is getting much better

The new downtown is a big part of it.

re: Mass Transit system…there are a lot of logistical problems with this but I agree with the idea. We need to somehow get the Overland Parkers downtown.

by Joel Thorman on Feb 9, 2009 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

Can't they stay in OP?

I have known some Johnson Countians over the years and they bug me. They want to enjoy the aspects of KC (there wouldn’t be any Kansas suburbs if it weren’t for the urban core of KC for them to grow out of) but stay in the burbs and not pay for any of it. I also realize that I am an odd duck, I love sports but I also love the arts.

by Rev. Slappy on Feb 9, 2009 8:40 PM CST up reply actions

No joke

Those fools people can stay in OP.

It would actually be SUPER easy to have a subway system… If the powers that are would want to that is. The underground would be perfect for it, and if memory serves me correct it’s owned and operated by the Hunts. I’m not too familiar with how extensive the network of tunnels is, but I know it’s pretty expansive. I’ve heard that you can go from Ameristar area to the other side of downtown KC without a hitch, so I suppose it goes under the MO river.

All I have to say is "Thank you, Clark."

by IISaiNtII on Feb 16, 2009 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

We want the Funk

The Funk gets a bad rap.
KC doesn’t need a new transit system, we need a bus system that works and bike lanes.

Born and raised in Memphis, TN (Thank ya very much)

Currently reside in Nesbit, MS about 15 minutes south of Memphis. Parents were transferred here in ’59 from KC. All my relatives still live in KC. I spent most every summer raised near Hardesty and 23rd or something like that. Anyone who is familiar with the Fire Dept there might remember my grandfather Harley Tompkins was a career firefighter for KC and was fired by the Mayor when he had a heart attack on the job. My grnadmother and her daughters picketed City Hall to get him some kind of job back. All this went down about the time I was born in ’61.
I loved visiting KC and still do when I can. I have been to many games since my Aunts use to work at the Stadium as tour guides. Many, Many wonderful childhood memories of Municple Stadium and Arrowhead. And hopefully a few more to come! :)

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

Growing up in the early 90's

and beginning to play LB in my pop warner league, I discovered Derrick Thomas. I admired the defensive intensity of the Marty era. I loved the way Arrowhead Stadium looked and sounded. Became a Chiefs fan and never looked back.

That's a pretty awesome reason.

And rather great devotion. It’s easy to stay a fan for your hometown team, but to be half the country away, before DirecTV, and maintain the fandom is impressive.

Atlanta, GA

Born in Detroit, but spent my “formative” years in KC watching the Royals through the late-80s to early 90s, and of course the Chiefs resurgence in the ‘90s. Regarding the Forbes survey, the majority of those polled obviously haven’t been to any of these cities. I’ve found that KC, Cincy & Minneapolis are all great cities and I can’t see how anyone who’s spent significant time in any of them would say that.

Born and raised just south of San Jose, CA. When Montana became a Chief, I did too :) and i’ve been bleeding red and gold ever since. I visited KC just to watch a Chiefs game a couple years back. It was one against the Ravens if any of you painfully remember their first home loss in December in many years.

The people who voted KC in the bottom 5 obviously have never seen or heard of Oakland. If it weren’t for the A’s I would never go anywhere near Oakland.

I’m sure the place is much more crowded than when I was there. When I was there Hwy 9A wasn’t through like I think it is now. They were planning to make that like an interstate – the other side of I295. At that time, Southside Blvd was the only way.

This Chefs fan is from the 64110, right off of Paseo and 39th, had a drug house at the end of my street growing up that kept getting boarded up, it would sell after a year or so, get a fresh coat of paint, and then within a few months get boarded up again. Put that on repeat for my formative years…

So, I decide to buy a house in nice, safe, streets-are-immaculate-15-seconds-after-it-snows, Johnson County, and what do you know but two weeks after I move in this girl 2 blocks down stabs her sister’s boyfriend because he was trying to get the two sisters to stop arguing, and he dies on the spot.
So much for the safety of “The County”. I should have never left the Missouri side…

by thehulk on Feb 10, 2009 8:06 AM CST reply actions

oh yea, and spent my high-school years in Nor'Waldo

after my parents moved out of our house on 39th. It was pretty sweet, I had some Brookside friends that were too scared to come over across that invisible line…worried they’d get their tires slashed or something…
And there was also that one time Primetime showed up at my house, shirtless, and already verrry saucy at about 8pm on a Saturday night. He was getting primed for a pub-crawl-for-cancer. That was an interesting night.

When I went to UMKC

i lived at 4952 Forest (1 block from 49th and Troost) in 64110. Got robbed of my bicycle that i road to the store for beer cause the beer was bottled, it was all the money i had, and i didn’t want to break my beer to fight the 5 or 6 14 yr old girls. A couple blocks south of Rockhurst College.

Only been to KC a couple times (Worlds of Fun!), but my dad’s a Chiefs fan, so I’ve always been one. I did live in Lawrence for 1.5 years, though. That’s pretty close! And I was born in Rolla. Anyone here know Rolla?

Rolla!

Yes, I went to UMR my freshman year of college. But, I got the heck out of there due to lack of women!

Went there too

Got out after being too drunk to make rational decisions, and got with one of the Rolla women.

I cringe to think of that.

!!!!

That’s damn funny. I was there for 1983-1984 although I also went down to party the prior year because I had friends that went there 1 and 2 years prior. So, I went to St. Patty’s day about 3 years and, wow! I drank so much green beer, went to all the games, and all the frat parties which were pretty much wide open. I’m sure I still have liver disease dating to that time.

I just remember going to frat parties and as soon as you walked in you would see 2 big groups of guys. One group was surrounding the keg and the other was surrounding the 1 lucky girl! If you hooked up there then you did pretty good, even if the target might have been less than, um, desirable.

Top 10 places includes OP and Olathe

People – this Pew stuff in bunk. All it is is East Coast/ West Coast/Texas bias and the idea that KC is wheat fields and cows. Look it up: Overland Park, KS and Olathe, KS are ranked in the Top 10 in places to live/retire. Johnson County is where it’s at and for some reason many people have never heard of it. We don’t have mountains or oceans but we have pretty much everything else – and we don’t have to shack up in a small apartment for a small fortune! Lies, damned lies, and statistics. KC is good because of not only the Plaza but the nice suburbs that are growing at a super-fast rate. People who have been there understand that. I think Detriot was up there? DETRIOT LOL. And don’t forget Lawrence…

I live in Louisburg but grew up in Olathe.

also the two thousand plus ignorant fools

rated Minneapolis.. Minneapolis, Minn!!! as BOTTOM 5???? I love that city! I don’t understand their reasoning. They have never been here and don’t know anything – I hate Pew. It doens’t show how geographical area influences bias. What significance does a poll have if people are giving their opinions without ever having visited these places? KC Star had a great article about this on how terrible this “poll” was and how it tell us nothing and wastes everyones time. Shame on Pew for conducting survey that mean absolutely squat.

Born in Ottawa, KS

But grew up in Columbus, OH and now live in the suburbs of Chicago – Elmhurst to be exact. I’ve really enjoyed my time whenever I’ve been in KC. It reminds me a LOT of Columbus (about the same size, and feel), which is probably why I like it so much – reminds me of home.

Chiefs fan because the old man was one, and just like many others, it rubbed off on me.

Kind of like asking who would make the best president

Most people don’t have the first clue what “makes” and “good” president. Rush Limbaugh and Tom Cruise sure don’t. Sorry but most people are stupid. Not all, most. Intelligence is RARE folks. A majority of people are simple. They have no desire to do anything positive with their lives or continue to learn new things. And yet those simple minded people tend to have the most stubborn belief systems and sometimes are the loudest! That’s most of the bumper sticker crowd… sorry for this rant. It’s Monday…

by vanhoecke on Feb 10, 2009 10:27 AM CST reply actions

Just a question

Are you as unhappy as I am to be in St. Louis right now? I think the two cities are comparable, but Kansas City (with the mayor as an exception) is on the upswing while this place seems to get more miserable.

I worked near the city market when I was in high school and grew up outside KC, and I miss it terribly. Barbecue, fountains, and nicer or at least less bitter people. However, St. Louis does have a free zoo, and a large greenway where Ballpark Village is supposed to be.

I also love the fan-bases for both the Royals and Chiefs, loyal and hopeful, though to no avail lately. St. Louis fans piss me off, and if I don’t get out soon, I’m gonna end up married to a Cardinals fan.

The details of my life are quite inconsequential

… very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented…….the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we’d make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum… it’s breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

Baton Rouge, LA

these southerners have no clue what BBQ is. Born and raised in OP, 95th & Nall, went to college at Rockhurst, go HAWKS, best damn university on Troost. Own a small biz in BR, can’t wait till I make my first millions, definitely gonna get a condo in the Western Auto Building, that will be my lair until the day I die.

Sport my red & gold & powder blue evry chance I get. Grew up with season tickets for Royals and Chiefs. Went through the Bill Kinney/Todd Blackledge years and the World Series the good and the bad. Section 123 at Kauffman, Section 321 at Arrowhead, tailgated everychance we could, start with biscuits and gravy and Bloody Marys and end with Brats and Beers, those were the days.

Will give the LSU people credit for their tailgating skills, they start the night before.
