Chiefs Salary Cap Situation: Surtain Most Prominent Likely Casualty

The Kansas City Star published the latest salary cap figures for the Chiefs for 2009.  I'd link to it, but unfortunately they decided to get all sneaky and put it only in their actual newspaper (which I don't receive) because they don't yet appear to realize that the people most likely to care about cap figures are bloggers and most bloggers only go to the Star's online page.  I wonder if the people running the Star have ever watched "Other Peoples' Money"

Anyway, here's the online article they posted with the top cap figures.

HEAVY HITTERS
The top five players counting highest against the Chiefs’ current $85.6 million salary-cap commitments:

CB Patrick Surtain $9,730,000

RB Larry Johnson $7,956,191

LB Donnie Edwards $6,520,836

TE Tony Gonzalez $6,500,000

OB Brian Waters $5,100,000

Total against salary cap, including various bonuses:

$35,807,027

This likely means that Patrick Surtain's career as a Chief is over.  The Chiefs will save over $3 million by cutting him this offseason, which is a pretty wise move when you're talking about a cornerback who got run down and tackled by Philip Rivers.  He had a solid career while he was here and gave decent value for what he was paid, but the end comes for all players in the NFL eventually.  Donnie Edwards' dismal and injury-plagued 2008 season likely means that he'll be leaving the roster as well...same with Damon Huard who's in the final year of his contract.

Short post today...work calls.

2 for sure and maybe LJ

Surtain and Edwards will both be released. They are old, injury prone, and not worth the dollars. LJ I think will be out (either released or traded). What happens if we trade Tony. That leaves Brian waters at big mone.

If we got rid of all these guys but waters, how much of that 35,000,000 would be free on the cap. I assume some would come forward from old signing bonus. I would think we could have around 50 million to spend under the cap on young high quality free agents such as suggs, peppers, dansby. We could be huge players in the free agent market.

If we get rid of him who is our feature back? Can Charles or Smith do it? If not is there someone in free agency we could pick up or do we pick one in the third or fourth round?

Buckhalter?

correll buckhalter is going to be a free agent im sure he doesnt want to play behind westbrook his entire career, that could be an option

You can draft running backs and play them early.

Derrick Ward

I don’t know if the Giants will let him explore free agency, but the guy has a great YPC. He and Charles could make quite a combo.

He'll Be 29 Next Season

So I don’t think he’ll be worth a huge contract.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

by UCrawford on Feb 6, 2009 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

Damon Huard

Could also be another candidate to be cut from the roster. So there is more cap space opened up. I read that at the Star, Edwards, Surtain, and Huard likely to be cut.
I’m excited, this is the beginning of some awesome years in KC.

by ksjhwk on Feb 6, 2009 10:37 AM CST reply actions

I Think Huard's Gone

Final year of his contract and his prorated bonus remaining should be a lot less than his base salary. Plus, he’s just not part of the future. It would be nice if the Chiefs could trade him, though.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

Surely there are no more Peterson-Edwards combinations left in the NFL. Trade Huard, are you kidding or did you have a stroke?

by FanSinceLen on Feb 6, 2009 10:46 AM CST up reply actions

For A 6th or 7th Round Pick?

Somebody might have some interest in a decent backup…and that’s pretty much what Huard is. But if there’s no market, I suspect he’ll get cut anyway.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

Huard could be traded

easily – I think you are underestimating the value of a decent veteran backup QB.

Actually though, UC, I could see us keeping him and trading him in the middle of next season, when the first QB injuries start happening. Might get more value that way – it depends on who the other QB’s are.

by PVChiefsfan on Feb 6, 2009 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

I Don't Think He'll Be Here To Start The Season

Not unless the Chiefs are willing to stick with him the whole year. He’s paid too much to be a third-stringer and most teams don’t want to dump their second string guy mid-season.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

Market Might Be A Little Higher Mid-Season

But probably not that much.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

I also suspect he will be one of the first cut

However, the only team with some interest may be the patriots if a Cassel deal is worked out. But I am guessing they will go another direction if needed.

Buckhalter

This is in response to sobaki, dude buckhalter is injury prone they guy has had at least 3 knee surgeries in like 4 years. Don’t get me wrong when he’s healthy he’s not a bad runningback but why spend money on a guy who’s been hurt a majority of his career, we need guys who are gonna be ON the field (unlike Brodie).

I found this, not to ruin your thunder

Not including rookie contracts for those rookies coming in from the 2009 draft, these players have contracts with the Chiefs NEXT season. If the trend continues, the estimated salary cap for 2009 is $121.8 million. These salary cap figures are based on the contracts that they sign. They are not factored in with their “Cap Hit.” Usually, a player’s “Cap Hit” is larger than their salary number.

Albert, Branden- 493,750
Barth, Connor- 385k
Battle, Jackie- 460k
Boone, Alfonso- 1.4mil

Waters, Brian- 3.6mil
Williams, Demario-1mil

Total committed salary for the 2009 season is:
$51,743,750

Not including the “cap hit” figures and signing bonuses for rookies, the Chiefs will have somewhere around $65 million in cap room to play with. The bargaining agreement requires teams to spend AT LEAST 86% of their salary cap. That figure comes out to be roughly $99.76 million if the cap est. is correct. “Cap Hit” numbers and signing bonuses with eat up a big portion of the $40 million the Chiefs have to spend, but that still leaves a big number for the Chiefs to make up just to get in compliance with the NFL/NFLPA agreement.

I am not sure what is accurate these days.

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

Thanks

I didn’t have access to the full salary cap numbers, just the abbreviated thing they put on the Star’s online site.

I’m surprised that Dorsey’s salary is so low…he makes the same as Connor Barth.

By The Way

Cap hits are really going to screw with the team this year. 2009 is the final year of the cap unless a new collective bargaining agreement is set up, so all cap hits for contracts have to be applied this year and can’t be prorated out. It’ll be an interesting offseason indeed.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

This just in from Kris Mortunsin

“League sources tell me that a DC-9 carrying 37 NFL Agents has landed in Kansas City and they are in route to Arrowhead for a meeting with Scott Pioli. Most say they have never had the chance to visit with a Chiefs GM.”

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

He's Just Kidding

Pretty much anything we publish in comments that references Chris Mortensen or people buying houses in Loch Lloyd is an AP joke.
