Chiefs Reportedly Receive Permission To Interview Haley

Per the Red Zone and Adam Teicher (although they're really the same source), the Kansas City Chiefs have received permission to interview Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley for their vacant head coaching gig.

It was unclear when or where the meeting between Haley and Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli will take place.

Haley, 42, gained prominence this year as the Cardinals’ offensive coordinator. The Cardinals won the AFC West, had one of the league’s highest-scoring offensive teams and advanced to their first Super Bowl, where they were beaten in the final seconds by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pretty much nothing we don't already know.  Todd Haley as the Chiefs' new head coach appears to be a foregone conclusion and some poor guy's going to get his time wasted and intelligence insulted being "the Rooney", since the Chiefs reportedly still haven't met the NFL's hypocritical standard for a token interview.

I'm going to make a bold prediction that someday Leslie Frazier's going to land a head coaching gig in the NFL and I hope that he wins a Super Bowl in an embarassing blowout against one of the teams that dragged him to their city just so they could check a block*.  I hope that team's not Kansas City, of course, but then again it appears we never really considered the guy a candidate either so it would probably be karmic justice.

*I vote for the Rams.  I hate the Rams.  Mainly because every Ram I've ever owned on my fantasy team has stunk as long as I've owned them and improved once I dumped them and also because they've had some of the shadiest owners in the NFL.

From Now On

I’m just going to call the individual gets the token interview, “The Rooney”.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

by UCrawford on Feb 3, 2009 4:36 PM CST up reply actions

And

Candidates who get screwed over with such an interview when they were seriously trying to pursue the job will henceforth have been “roonied”.

That's brilliant

“The Rooney” and “Roonied” should be universally adopted for ALL bullshit reverse discrimination… err… affirmative action cases.

by Buck'O on Feb 3, 2009 5:13 PM CST up reply actions

I Will Say This For Affirmative Action, Though

Just because it’s fucked up and wrong doesn’t mean that there’s any kind of level playing field out there today or that there isn’t racial bias…it’s just the problems are a lot more subtle and complex than the pundits seem to comprehend and the affirmative action advocates don’t have the first fucking clue about how to address it. In a world that was really based on merit, Leslie Frazier would not be a token interview…he’d be a serious candidate for most of the HC openings in the NFL and he wouldn’t be getting passed over because he wasn’t buddies from way back in the day with one of the GMs looking for a coach (like Todd Haley), or because he didn’t have a dad who happened to be somebody in the league (like Mike Nolan or Dave Shula). You’re going to have a tough time convincing me that a two-time loser like Norv Turner (.448 career win percentage) got a job with the Chargers because he was so much better than a guy like Denny Green (.546 career win percentage). He got the job because he’s got more friends or acquaintances who are GMs or team owners than a guy like Denny Green or Leslie Frazier does. That’s cronyism…and although there may be an element of racism (probably unintentional) to it that’s certainly not going to get fixed by forcing NFL owners and GMs to run through a dog-and-pony show like the Rooney rule creates. That’s just highlighting the racial differences, not bridging them.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

by UCrawford on Feb 3, 2009 6:13 PM CST up reply actions

You're right

Did the powers that be ever deal with actual problem? No. It’s like a doctor prescribing medication to ease the symptoms rather than to cure the illness.

Frazier was one of those guys I had interest in. It was his situation that made me sit up and take notice of the Rooney rule for what it truly is; A short-sighted effort by the league owners to placate the public. It was instituted in lieu of directly mitigating their own behavioral short-fall: Cronyism. Does the term “white-wash” ring a bell?

Sure, affirmative action is a well intended concept. It’s done some good but ultimately, it’s flawed in that it unfairly tips the balance away from someone without curing the actual ailment. If you don’t solve the problem, it will eventually come full circle and turn on you.

Exhibit A: Leslie Frazier returns to his job in Minnesota, embarrassed and frustrated after being used by several teams to satisfy a racially biased rule.

Exhibit B: Several minority candidates decline to interview with the Chiefs because it’s a shallow racially driven scenario that they believe they have no realistic chance to overcome.

Two prime examples of how this kind of crap hurts both sides.

by Buck'O on Feb 3, 2009 7:02 PM CST up reply actions

Absolutely

And I don’t think it helps that the Chiefs have done nothing to indicate they’re interested in candidates other than Haley. I’m fine with the secrecy for the most part, but this is the kind of crap that stuff spawns too…they’ve kept everything so out of sight that there’s not much for anyone to assume except that they must have made up their mind already.

If The NFL Was Serious About Diversity In The Head Coaching Ranks

(And I’m not saying that they should be forced to do this because I oppose racial quotas and believe businesses should be free to hire who they want and get the public criticism or praise for it) they’d drop the hiring requirement for head coaches and push it for coordinators and position coaches…that will change the mix a lot quicker. Add more qualified head coaching candidates, you’ll have more minority head coaches. It’ll also force teams to scout for minority coaching talent more frequently than every couple of years (about the length of a head coaching career).

But of course the NFL probably won’t do that because a) most affirmative action proponents seem to operate from the perspective that people should be immediately promoted to the top jobs based on ethnicity without ever having to prove that they’re qualified to do those jobs because they think “diversity” is the cure-all and b) it’s not high-profile enough for the NFL to claim credit for championing “diversity” so why fuck up how you do things if you’re not going to get much credit for it?

Did the "Rooney" Rule assist

Mike Tomlin in securing his spot in the Super Bowl annals? If so, he’s the poster boy of the “Rooney” Rule.

by ilamuku on Feb 3, 2009 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

I Think It Had To Do More With Him Being A Great DC

And a good interview. But I think that Pittsburgh was pretty ambivalent about who they wanted to replace Cowher so I think that they were keeping an open mind and the Rooney rule wasn’t that much of a factor in Tomlin’s hiring…they were just impressed by him (rightfully so).

How teams that hire talented people who are good at their jobs tend to do better. Weird. :)

by UCrawford on Feb 4, 2009 7:40 AM CST up reply actions

I Don't Think That Actually Matters

The Lions claimed that they tried to interview minority candidates in 2003 when they fired Marty Morhinweg before they hired Steve Mariucci, only to have those candidates refuse to interview because they considered Mariucci to already have the job. League fined them anyway.

That said, the fine itself was really small ($200,000) so it may not be a problem. Of course, that was under a different commissioner and Goodell’s already shown himself to be a much stricter disciplinarian than Tagliabue.

What the fuck is the rooney rule

rooney rule is so stupid I know its supposed to promote hirign black coaches or whatever but how does this help. Forcing a team to interview someone just makes it too much of a hastle. If they dont want to hire a black coach, forcing a team to interview one will nto make a difference

Couldn't Agree More about Frazier

I really think the Chiefs need to take a very serious look at Frazier as HC. I’m nowhere near the football guru most of the posters are on this site, but I live in Minneapolis and have been forced to watch Vikings and really like the way their defense plays. In my opinion out of the up and coming coaches he would be the best candidate to turn our defense into one that plays with the intensity of the Steelers or Ravens. I’m just not excited about the idea of Haley building a wild offense and what I can only assume is a bend-but-don’t break defense.

by plblack on Feb 3, 2009 4:40 PM CST reply actions

I Like Him Too

He was a successful head coach when he ran a college program…he built the damned thing from scratch and turned it into a winner. He’s also been successful everywhere he’s gone since then. I’ll be fine with Haley if we get him, but I still think Frazier has the makings of an excellent head coach and it’s a shame nobody else really considered him.

Completely Agree!

I would also like the Chiefs to take a good look at Frazier. The fact he has experience building a program is a plus in my opinion. I also think Todd Bowles will make a good coach someday. I wrote a bit about them in a previous post.

bq. Blockquoted paragraph The Chiefs were planning to announce their new head coach later this week.

“…were planning”? “…are planning”? Any significance to the tense in Teicher’s report? Could it realistically take place by this weekend if they haven’t even met with him yet?

by ChiefMedic on Feb 3, 2009 5:00 PM CST reply actions

I Figure They'll Try To Get It Resolved Quickly

The start of free agency is the end of this month, so they’ll want the head coach in place to a) assemble his staff, b) evaluate current personnel and c) figure out who the Chiefs plan to target in free agency. I’d be surprised if it took beyond the end of next week.

I live in Minnesota

And I thought the Vikings defense was awfully inconsistent at times this year. They sure gave up some huge 3rd downs to the Eagles in the playoff game or they might have won. They weren’t as tough to run against as last season.

I’m not saying Frazier wouldn’t do a good job. I also don’t think he was merely a token interview. The Rams, Lions and Broncos were all quite high on him and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the 2nd choice of all three.

Haley has a connection to our GM. That’s not unusual. People like to work with people whom they know and are comfortable. It’s only cronyism if Haley isn’t qualified (he is) or doesn’t do well (we don’t know, but I think this team is ready to head upward). Arizona’s offense has improved the last two years. Their OL play in particular was improved this year.

You could count on one hand the number of tackles in the league who could have handled Harrison the way he was playing on Sunday. He was a man possessed.
