Chiefs Spoke to Six Players at the Senior Bowl

New Era Scouting has a bit of information that we somehow missed last week.  Apparently, the Kansas City Chiefs spoke with six players at the Senior Bowl two weeks ago.

Nathan Brown, QB, Central Arkansas
Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC
Mike Wallace, WR, Ole Miss
Pat White, QB, West Virginia
Brian Cushing, OLB, USC
Keenan Lewis, CB, Oregon State

Nathan Brown and Pat White are the two names that jump out at me immediately.  Are one of these two the next Tom Brady or Matt Cassel?

Because this is the first bit of substantial information on specific players the Chiefs may (or may not) be targeting, we'll be taking a closer look at each player throughout the rest of the week.

Which player or position jumps out at you the most?

H/T to BBS at Stampede Blue for pointing this out to us.

Maualuga

I have to say his name jumps out the most b/c he is the only likely first rounder if the chiefs were to draft any of these players. How in the hell do they talk to these guys and no top tier DE.

Hilarious

To hear Teicher discuss it last week, it sounded like the Chiefs had no presence at all at the Senior Bowl. What a goon.

Teicher is a dumb ass

My grandmother has a higher football IQ then Tricher, he makes some of the dumbest comments ever in his colum and when he appears on the radio.

Cushing, Ray M & White

I’m most excited about Cushing, but Maualuga and White were both good to see. I’m slightly disappointed that the Unger and the other center weren’t reported as spoken too. I’m sure it is dependant on who the scouts were and exactly what orders they were given.

by TXChiefan on Feb 3, 2009 2:31 PM CST reply actions

Mack and Unger...

may be viewed as such sure things that scouts don’t need to talk with them. Just a guess.

Pat White

I’m a big Pat White fan he is the ultimate winner. He is also the type of player Gailey would love.

by FrankPitts on Feb 3, 2009 2:34 PM CST reply actions

mayock

kept saying 2nd day. round 3 or 4 during the senior bowl. He also kept saying he’d be a wideout rather than a QB. Called him a good option in a wildcat style offense.

Must have been under

that old coaches orders, a team full of corners. No o-lineman, disappointing.

I still think the Senior Bowl is a joke...

and none of us should but too much weight ito how players did or who was talked to there.

by HIV 2 Elway on Feb 3, 2009 2:39 PM CST reply actions

Agreed

While this is an interesting conversation starter, that list likely means very little in the grand scheme of things.

True...

and Lord knows, we need conversation starters. Free angency and the draft can’t get here fast enough

Cushing's Interesting

Maybe the Chiefs are thinking he’ll slip to the second round? Pat White’s probably a late first day pick at best, so the Chiefs should definitely have a shot at him.

Or this could mean nothing at all…they talked to a CB as well, and that’s a position the Chiefs appear to be very set at.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

If Cushing falls to the 2nd

and we get Maualuga in the 1st… Our linebacking core would be scary. That way Demorrio and Boiman could play in their natural sphere of backuperhood.

He doesn’t have close to the injury history that Brodie Croyle had.

Just because someone is small, doesn’t mean they can’t take a pounding (e.g. Steve Slaton).

i think

he is an excellent player. He is very humble and very smart, he also is a very hard worker. i think we should pick him up if he is available in later rounds and give him a few years to grow. Maybe he can put on a few pounds if thats everyones biggest beef with him. The kid has some great field vision and speed. he is also an accurate thrower from the times I saw him play. Not starting Qb day one but in a year or 2 he could be solid.

Question to insert here:

Will the Chief scouts or coaches whom talked with these players still be employed in three weeks for us?
Which leads to, will these be the same six players we will target in the draft?

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

Sad news

after looking at the invitees to the combine list, I noticed Daniel Holtzclaw was not listed. If the young man indeed makes it to the show, it’s going to be a long hard haul, but I’ll still pull for him.

I hope your right

Eastern Michigan I doubt will get to have one, so he would have to get permission I think from another school, possibly Michigan or Mich State. Hopefully they would grant him that.

Nathan Brown?

I had no idea who this was, so I investigated. He apparently lit up Tulsa, his only FCS opponent, but who didn’t? The thing that stood out for me, maybe a discrepancy and certainly without import, is that it says he wasn’t sacked his Sophomore and Junior years, which I find unlikely. Here’s a scouting report from the Senior bowl. He was 9-15 for 92 yards, and further deepening my disdain for ESPN’s stats, was sacked twice for 18 yards lost.

2009 Senior Bowl: The first thing scouts notice about Brown is his below-average height. When he starts throwing the ball, however, his zip and accuracy are surprising. Even his 45- to 50-yard throws are tight spirals. And his ability to make plays from outside the pocket reminds some scouts of Tony Romo. Coaches will coach him up a little on his mechanics, though, as he likes to push the ball at times, throw off his back foot and even drop to a three-quarters delivery. Much is made about the speed of the game increasing as you climb the football ladder from high school to college to the pros. That applies to the college ranks, too. “The speed has increased a little bit, but it’s not as drastic as I thought,” said Brown. “Coming in you know that everyone from the defensive line to the defensive backs has speed, but that’s just part of the game.” And he knows that his play here can “pave the path” for other FCS quarterbacks “just like Joe Flacco did for us.” – Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com

This site had him as the eight best QB and a fifth rounder.

Watch this happen

If word is getting out that Pioli is looking at Brown, then a probable 5th rounder will turn into a second rounder by Oakland or some team reaching.

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Chase Patton?

This was a story in an ESPN issue, about how they thought Chase Patton could be an NFL QB while Chase Daniel, is a backup in the League. He has the size and arm strength, do you think he will be available in maybe the sixth round?

by Wildcats23 on Feb 3, 2009 4:02 PM CST reply actions

Patton will be available very late I'd imagine

He’s another Cassel type player so I would guess the 6th-7th round.
