VIDEO: Matt Cassel 2008 Highlights

Here are almost seven minutes of Matt Cassel highlights from last season.

I haven't chimed in fully yet on the trade but my feelings are a lot like what I've been reading in the comments- shock, excitement and optimism. I'm also very impressed how Scott Pioli pulled this off.

Right now, I'm as excited as I've ever been about the Kansas City Chiefs. And we haven't played a down of the 2009 season.

Life is good. In Pioli we trust.

My two cents

Looking at this video, I am all of a sudden of the opinion that the Kansas City Chiefs are going to look seriously at O-Line to protect this guy. These highlights are pretty sic, but he’s not going to do all of that for us without better protection than he’d get if we went live today.

Good point

He doesn’t have a bit of Thigpen’s mobility.

by Chris Thorman on Feb 28, 2009 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

He sure does have a nice laser beam, doesn't he.

This is exciting as hell. This was an absolutely amazing trade. I hope everyone can relax now. Pioli is is a real magician all of a sudden huh? Hey DJ, you like this deal or Stafford better? :)

If Pioli is convinced he is a franchise guy I will bow to his expertise

I’m not in love with Stafford per se, I’m in love with the idea of the Chiefs getting a franchise QB. I liked Stafford because I watched him last year and think he can be good in the NFL. Aside from the time the Pats played the Chiefs, I never watched Cassel.

The main thing that was important to me is that the Chiefs got a QB that they thought was going to be good and built the team around him from here on out. Apparently Cassel is that guy so now I’m ready to move forward with him in mind.

by ChiefDJ on Feb 28, 2009 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

Cassel Took Awhile To Adjust

But once he did he was a very good QB. The biggest concern, however, was his tendency to disappear at time against bigger competition, leading some to speculate that he was a QB who could beat bad teams but not good ones. Of course they said that more before he put up consecutive 400 yard passing games against New York and Miami…criticism died down pretty quickly after that.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.

On that same note

I guess the spread/pistol offense is out the window.

Yeah exactly!

The entire team has a new perspictive all of a sudden. Huge ramifications for our next moves. This is gonna make for some good speculation FUD.

NE ran alot of plays out of the shotgun/spread formation

so did Arizona. I think it will still be an integral part of the offense going forward.

by Lvl.99 on Feb 28, 2009 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly, NE's record breaking offense in 2007 was a spread offense. Almost every throw was shotgun.

I won’t be surprised to see some more acquisitions via free agency by the chiefs to shore up the O-Line. Is there any O-Line talent out there?

Before we traded away our 2nd round pick

I was sure we’d go for a center. Mack or Unger. I have no idea how to fill that gap now.

tough guy that finishes plays. i think he fits the mold of what we are trying to do.

by TheQ on Feb 28, 2009 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

Willis out of Seattle or Stinchomb from New Orleans @ RT.

Couple of guards were recently released because of salary cap implications. We could fill our need at center thorugh the draft as its an especially deep class.

I like Cassel but we need a legitimate O line to protect him. He’ll become the next David Carr if we cat protect him.. I think were looking to free agency

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

by 808NaNz808 on Feb 28, 2009 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

agreed I think Willis @ RT

makes alot of sense for us. Plus one of these guards that were recent salary cap casualties. I think we will fill our need of a center in the draft now that Brown and Saturday have signed elsewhere. Overall look for a much more stable, powerful offensive line.

by Lvl.99 on Feb 28, 2009 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

How is this NOT doing NE a favor?

We essentially gave up a late 1st round pick for an aging veteran who probably would have been cut next season and a system QB. I can understand Chiefs fans being hungry for change and improvement but Matt Cassel? Seriously? Yes, he played well last season but that was behind a team that virtually went undefeated the season before. I can think of no better personification of a system QB than Matt Cassel. On the trade value chart, whats the score for a 7th round QB and close to over the hill LB? Talk about being well played and the kicker is most people think we got the sweet end of the deal.

Pioli’s shown ability to develop a system and draft players that succeed within it. There’s no reason we couldn’t have found our Brady or Cassel equivalents in late rounds. Instead we lose a very important pick that could have vastly upgraded our offensive line our LB corps thats in disrepair

We got fleeced and don’t even know it yet….

by KansasCityShuffle on Feb 28, 2009 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

The ONLY silver lining to this cloud

is if we draft a bookend tackle @ #3 like Monroe or Jason Smith. If so, I can come to peace with this awful (IMO) decision

by KansasCityShuffle on Feb 28, 2009 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

the idea of picking up a big time OT appeals to me

as does picking up Curry or drafting Raji, 3 very appetizing sceanrios.
We picked up a QBOTF in Cassel and a starting OLB in Vrabel w/ the 2nd round draft pick. Id say thats outstanding value, we filled two needs with one pick.

If It Ain't Broken

Don’t fix it.

Unless its a dog.

by Sudden on Feb 28, 2009 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

Well the line in general IS broken...

And Branden was not outstanding at LT…just good….

He can move anywhere we need him…

by woodman212 on Feb 28, 2009 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

Besides

Pioli has proven himself capable of drafting gems of OLineman in late rounds. Only his LT in NE was a first rounder, but functionally a second as the 31st pick.

Add to that the depth of T in this draft, and I think we’re golden. Ideally though, we trade down for a mid first and second and snag another LB (Cushing or Clay maybe?) and Unger or Mack in the second.

by Sudden on Feb 28, 2009 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

Now that is true...

Though I would not classify it as significantly “deep” but that there are many elite tackles but after that there is a bigtime drop off in talent…

But I am confident in Pioli’s drafting…

Plus Bill Muir is a good O-Line coach…not a good OC…but a good O-Line coach haha

by woodman212 on Feb 28, 2009 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

"but functionally a second as the 31st pick."

He said that….

by woodman212 on Feb 28, 2009 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

I was wrong.

But didn’t Pioli draft a T somewhere in the late first?

by Sudden on Feb 28, 2009 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

He did.

You’re thinking of Logan Mankins in 2005, 32nd overall.

by KansasCityShuffle on Feb 28, 2009 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

You are the only person i have heard such things from sir...

As far as the “system QB” theory….

You know…id like to redeem that idea a little…This is not just any system he is coming from. There was a great deal of talent around him, yes, but he also was immersed in the “system” of the greatest coach of our generation. Do you honestly think just anyone could go out there and throw to Randy Moss and look like Cassel did? no chance…Do you think he didn’t learn what it takes to be a pro QB from the best coach and the best QB of this era….

thats a joke…

by woodman212 on Feb 28, 2009 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

Good points

There is a difference between being a “system” player and being a very well coached player.

by ChiefDJ on Feb 28, 2009 6:33 PM CST up reply actions

to be fair...

…I’m realistic. It’s fair to point out that Cassel went 11-5 QB-ing a team that went 16-0 a year prior, but I’m not expecting us to go 11-5 next year either. I’m not even expecting us to have a winning season in 2009.

But I DO think it’s a step in the right direction. KC has not had a true franchise QB in several years.

When I fist heard about the trade...

I was in my car on my way home. I didn’t get the detail of the tade. I thought that we must have given up our first round pick. I was pissed. Then when I found out that it only cost us a 2nd rounder for two starters I felt much better. This was a good value trade. Check out Primetime’s post on the homepage.

How good of a deal is this for the Chiefs? NBC pointed out two other quarterbacks who were traded for a 2nd round pick:

Daunte Culpepper (with a shot knee)
A.J. Feeley

We got two starters for ours. Thats great value!

any doubt about the competence in the Chiefs front office.
Chiefs rock always have but now are starting to show signs of life again. Its like Hulkamania is going wild on Kc.

I like the story behind Thigpen and thought him and Cassel were comparable, even wrote a couple of times on it, but after researching and then comparing it to Thigpen’s stuggles in the second half of games in addition to how he played in the last 2 games Cassel is just on another level. We have our QBOTF, time now.

A few things after watching that video

- I’m impressed with his scrambling and running ability. He’s definitely not afraid to tuck it down and go get a first down.

- Colquitt better watch out for his punting job with that last pooch kick he made.

-Lastly, Randy Moss and Wes Welker are really good and we need some other receivers because Cassell has been spoiled.

The receivers rarely had to adjust to the throw. Granted many of those throws were screens, but nearly all the others were in stride.

I was pulling for Thigpen but I think Cassell has shown he is ready to be a professional quarterback, I know he had a great team around him but he still threw for 3,600+ yards last year and 21 touchdowns. That puts him over any quarterback we could get in the draft this year in my book…I am excited to see what happens

Good job, Pioli!

I was rooting for Thigpen but after checking out this clip, I’m feeling pretty dang good about Cassel. That very first clip still stung a little, too.

Anybody considered an Anquan Boldin acquisition? I’m sure Haley’d love to get his hands on Crabtree, but I’m not sure that’s where our 1st pick would be best spent.

One thing I’m relieved over is the fact that we won’t be looking at Stafford.

Ok, I admit I didn’t watch the entire clip but the whole manlove thing with not-so-subtle Queen background track was creeping me out some. Still, it looked to me like a Cassel is a strong-armed QB who is quick to bolt the pocket and who benefited from a whole lot of yards-after-catch. But honestly, I’d bet even Whitlock’s BFF, Jeff George, would have actually done well with Welker and Moss on the other end of his passes.

I just don’t get why everybody is so pumped by this trade.

The Chiefs have needs all over the field, but at one of the few positions where they were finding some stability, namely QB, they decide to bring in a new guy. Forget that the offensive line got the fragile Croyle killed and could barely get out of its own way on running plays, let’s bring in a QB. Never mind that Johnson won’t ever mature and has already had his last 1000yd season with the team, let’s bring in a QB. The defensive line and the linebackers are record-setting bad but just ignore all that, let’s bring in a QB.

And all it cost was the 34th pick in the draft. And what is it, 14mil? That’s a huge investment in upgrading one position on the roster. It’s no wonder Pioli likes the guy as he was one of the braintrust that drafted him but did he really make a good move? One season does not a QB make. The names Grbac and Bono come quickly to mind. I fel as though I even have to wonder whether he was working in the best interest of the Chiefs.

You have to admit it, this trade sure works out well for the Pats. They get out the awkward situation in which they would find themselves once Brady returns, the likes of which they haven’t seen since Bledsoe was on their roster. They get what amounts to a low 1st round pick and they save some serious bank. Don’t let anybody tell you that Pioli pulled one over on his old boss. It’s more likely that it worked out the other way around.

I hope Cassel is great. I hope he is so good that he magically makes the defense better, turns Bowe into an All-Pro and helps Larry find his give-a-damn. Yeah, I have lots of hopes. I’m just not putting my blinders on.

+1..

…and who said Free Agency was over? Who said we’re not still going after other people as well. You’re acting like this is the only off-season transaction the Chiefs will make this year. There are going to be other moves made before FA ends to help build a team around Cassel. They’re just not going to be the Washington Redskins and buy the best player from every team and then assume they’re going to the Super Bowl.

And even then Cassel STILL probably isn’t going to have a season like he did with NE last year, but NO realistic Chiefs fan should be asking that of him. We can HOPE for an Atlanta/Miami situation, but no one should realisticly be expecting it.

What a Punt

Colquitt better watch the F out!

It is a new Era at Arrowhead. I do not yet know if it is one of greatness or one of ineptitude. I am excited to see which way it goes, and will support my team until the end, bitter or sweet!
