"I have a long history with both players," said Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli. "Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family."

I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.

He clearly used the Jedi mind trick on BB. “Those aren’t the draft picks you’re looking for.”

Jedi mind trick on BB? I don’t think so. This deal was good for both teams. The Chiefs get a darn good QB and an aging good linebacker. The Patriots free up 19 million in cap money and get an early second round pick. These are considered excellent value picks by the Patriots ( good quality players for less money and more years.) I wonder what the Patriots will do with all that cap space? Knowing the team as well as i do i would say re-sign some of their top vets. What a novel idea. It was a good deal for both teams.

Note

Cassel will be 27 at the startof the season.

Ridiculous Upside: All the "Almost NBA" info you can handle!

And

Vrabel will be 34 I believe.

by Joel Thorman on Feb 28, 2009 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

Cassel is a ridiculously young 27.

He didn’t start in college, has only started one season in the NFL. He has a lot of miles ahead of him. If the Chiefs get an 8-10 year starter for a second round pick (and add a veteran LB to add work ethic lessons to a team coddled by Herm) it’s a pretty amazing trade. Remember the Chiefs gave up a first rounder for Trent Green and a first rounder for Joe Montana.

Ya'll dont think Guppy is behind this trying to pull a fast one do you?

It Was An Outstanding Trade

Even if he’s not a Hall of Famer. A QB who’s posted stats like that and a good situational linebacker for only a 2nd round pick? That’s a great move on the Chiefs’ part.

Think about this

Two of our biggest areas of concern/weakness were the LB and QB. If we snag Curry then our LB core is quickly upgraded (even if for a year or two with Vrabel) and our QB situation is upgraded a ton.

8-8 won the West this year.

I was comparing the Brian Waters situation to the Jason Taylor situation last year. I commented that Taylor must have enjoyed watching the Dolphins in the playoffs from his living room. People got all over me, suggesting it was stupid to think the Chiefs could win their division like the Dolphins did this year. After todays events, anybody want to say that winning the West in 2009 is unrealistic?

by Mully on Feb 28, 2009 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

Even If They Hadn't Released Johnson

They needed someone else. Johnson’s finished…he was absolutely horrible when they Cowboys needed to start him. And with Romo’s style of play he’s going to be an injury risk, so they need a backup.

Good move by the Lions. Kitna had no value for them and they were able to get something for him.

by UCrawford on Feb 28, 2009 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

Vrabel

I actually see bigger value to us from him in this pick. our D is awfully young, thin at LB, and DJ’s been underperforming. Assuming his health is solid, and we can get a couple-few years outta him, then Cassel is gravy.

I’m not sold on Cassel, but sure, put him in the lead slot, and let him and Bone duke it out FTW. Whoever comes out on top, it shores up the QB position.

Excellent trade, if not at the Cowboys-Vikings level. Seems a decent enough move for NE, too.

If the O-line isn't built up, a rookie QB is gonna look bad next season. If the O-line is a lot better, Thigpen will win more next season.
QBs drafted in the top 5, back to 2001:
Michael Vick, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Alex Smith, Vince Young, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Ryan. How many were worth that high a pick? You decide.

by Bleedingredandgold on Feb 28, 2009 2:11 PM CST reply actions

Especially with the 3-4

It’s a somewhat specialized defense so it’s nice to have a veteran of the 3-4 in there.

by Joel Thorman on Feb 28, 2009 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

and he can play 4-3 as well, not so?

MLB was a pretty glaring lack last season. My guess is that Donnie was supposed to fill that, and his health issues kinda tore that plan up.

I could see Vrabel in a 4-3 at MLB, calling the shots. By all accounts, he’s got a head on his shoulders. Plus he adds to the 3-4 potential, as you note. Vrabel’s a bigger upgrade at LB than Cassel is at QB, unless I miss my guess.

Cassel vs. Thigpen in Camp should improve the play of both.
Next on the need list: linebacker, and both lines

by CPT.Caveman on Feb 28, 2009 3:42 PM CST reply actions

well as a Tyler Thigpen fan, I’m not too happy about this trade. :( But I figured ever since Pioli came in as GM. It will likely work out well for the Chiefs and to get both him and Vrabel for a second rounder seems like a steal. Guess I will have to hope Tyler moves on elsewhere now.

by Kallor on Feb 28, 2009 4:02 PM CST reply actions

totaly agree

i hope this isnt Grbac vs. Gannon. but for a second what can you say?

by Hendrix on Feb 28, 2009 4:42 PM CST up reply actions

I'm alright with this.

And, I say that as a fan of Tyler Thigpen.

If Tyler’s our QB, we’ve got a great back-up for him. If Cassel’s our QB, we’ve got a great back-up for him. That’s not a bad position to be in.

We’ve got a leader on Defense, which we sorely needed. Even if he’s only able to give us another couple of seasons, he can train the young guys in the way they ought to do things. That’s not a bad deal, either — especially if we manage to get Curry.

And, at the end of the day, we only gave up a 2nd Round draft pick. I think it’s a dang solid trade.

I still don’t like Haley, but I have a lot more confidence in Pioli now.

by JacinB on Feb 28, 2009 4:07 PM CST reply actions

WOW!

Its amazing how fast the mood changed from yestrday. Every body was hating on Pioli and Haley yesterday. I see the cooler heads prevailed.

WooHoo!

I just got home from work and at first glance, this looks like a great deal. Feel bad about Thiggy and I’m not completely sold on Cassel though. Now my heart wants us to draft a certain WR from Texas Tech and my brain wants Curry. But OL may be the wise choice. I’m so confused! :)

by OT89 on Feb 28, 2009 6:58 PM CST reply actions

Good luck guys and gals...

NE fan here. Cassell quite literally saved our season after almost everyone wanted him cutt after the preseason games. He is mobile as hell in the pocket and makes some damn good decisions to boot. I thought Thigpen was gonna be the guy, but, new GM, new rules. Vrabel, what can I say . yeah, he may be gettin’ up there in age, but veteran leadership is what is needed in the locker room and on the field. He’s had a couple of unsportsmanlike incidences, but the good far outweighs the bad. This guy will be a rock on your defense…whether it be from an experience standpoint or a tutoring standpoint. Out of the two, really sad to see Vrabel go. He’s got a couple of years left and would’ve liked to see him retire as a Patriot. He’s yours now, take care of him accordingly.
I’ve been reading how everyone’s ready to show Pioli the door already before today. Hell, sounds like good ole’ NE hospitality. He’s used to it. NE sports fans are some of the toughest in the country. Lay it on him and hope he’ll deliver for you. Good luck this season. I for one will be watching your team. Hell, I’ll definitely take Cassell in a fantasy draft if he’s availbale.

by OneMore on Feb 28, 2009 7:39 PM CST reply actions

What I keep seeing in the press is "Brilliant",

“Excellent” and “Outstanding” trade. Pioli is still showing he is a master at the trade. Expect more to come. They may not look like the shiny new penny you wanted, but underneath they will be some good solid ones that work just as well.

by oldchiefsfan on Feb 28, 2009 9:03 PM CST reply actions

Very nice!

I just can’t remember when i have been this excited about the Chiefs. I have had to get used to barely getting by, so these moves with actual potential are even shocking me a little. If this keeps up, my rock bottom expectations might raise a bit ;-)

In addition to our acquisitions, we have somehow managed to cause strife within an opposing organization. Jay is now pissed at the Bronco’s, how cool is that? I can’t imagine that this was by design, but who knows, lol.

by morob on Mar 1, 2009 12:29 AM CST reply actions

Steve Bono, Welcome Back to KC!

Cassel has yet to do anything. He took a SB team and missed the playoffs. He’s a one-year guy who has yet to win anything. This is not Joe Montana to the Chiefs. Its not even Dave Krieg to the Chiefs.

A 2nd rounder isn’t too bad but let’s wait and see. I remember Scott Mitchell and Steve Bono (and others).

Let’s see how well he does when he doesn’t have Randy Moss and Pioli/Haley run TG out of town.

Just please keep Thigpen around and give him a chance when Cassel falls flat. His upside is much greater.

As always, I’ll be happy to be wrong about my pessimism.
