New England’s Pro Bowl linebacker Mike Vrabel is in Kansas City undergoing a physical so that he can then be traded to the Chiefs. General Manager Scott Pioli is reaching out to bring in a player familiar with his system, and New England is a willing trade partner.

oh hell no

we better not be trading Brian Waters for him, this guy is old. I think this is where LJ takes his leave maybe Vrabel and a fifth will suffice

Coming Off A Bad Year

I think Rotoworld said it best…they were surprised anyone gave up a draft pick for him.

God, I hope it wasn’t anything above a sixth rounder…fifth rounder max.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.

As long as they didn't give up better than a 4th rounder for him I'm fine with it

Our defense hasn’t had a leader since Derrick Thomas. If Vrabel can fill that void for a few years and let some of our other young guys develop, I’m all for that.

I hope its not a 4th rounder.

I bet they bring in more vet FA linebackers

Thats what the Patriots did for so many years, draft young players all around but keep vet LBs as the core. We might fill out the LBs in free agency and not draft a single one.

4th is great

Read the article—they make a great point that he’s not going to really be a player as much as he’s going to coach on the field. We’re moving from one defensive system to another completely different system. I, for one, would feel good devoting a player to making the transition that much better.

Hey, that's what we need.

A bunch of guys who can’t coach defense on the sidelines, and one less player on the field because, instead of playing, he’s telling the other guys what they should be doing.

Recipe for success right there, I tells ya.

by JacinB on Feb 27, 2009 2:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

This is the guy

that wanted Herm to stay.

by paratrooper on Feb 27, 2009 2:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Uh, no.

I wanted to either keep Herm or know that we were upgrading when we let him go. As near as I can tell, we didn’t.

Then we cut a bunch of guys who weren’t very good at doing their job and replaced them with a bunch of guys who were equally bad at doing their job, if not worse.

The only person on the coaching staff I’ve got any confidence in right now is Chan Gailey, and it’s up in the air whether or not anyone’s even going to pay any attention to what he says next season because, for all we know, Haley’s going to call the plays on offense himself.

Now, we’re taking a spot on the field up with a guy who’s going to be, essentially, an assistant coach and is well past his productive years. If we’re doing that, why not keep Surtain? Or, resign Ty Law?

Getting old players who are well past their prime just because they know the system or can bring experience to the locker room or can fill a need is what Carl Peterson used to do a lot of. Seems to me that a lot of people around here wanted him gone. If we’re going to do things the exact same way he used to do them, why’d we bother firing him in the first place?

by JacinB on Feb 27, 2009 2:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

[W]e cut a bunch of guys who weren’t very good at doing their job and replaced them with a bunch of guys who were equally bad at doing their job, if not worse.

First off, how do you know they’re “equally bad at doing their job, if not worse”?

Now, we’re taking a spot on the field up with a guy who’s going to be, essentially, an assistant coach and is well past his productive years. If we’re doing that, why not keep Surtain? Or, resign Ty Law?

It’s not unusual for teams to go after veterans who have a knowledge of the game (or a system), even if they’re past their prime. Wanna talk about past their prime? Look up Surtain, or worse, Law, and compare them to Vrabel’s rap sheet. Vrabel would have been the #2 linebacker last year in tackles on KC. I’ll take his busted booty here over Pat Thomas (no disrespect) any day.

And JacinB Brings Up Some Valid Points

Personally, I’m not thrilled with us grabbing Vrabel either. He’s an old player, coming off a bad year and he appears to be a situational player, not an every down guy. What’s to like about this? His name? The fact he used to play for the Patriots? So what if he’s not going to produce like that in the future?

Leadership

is what he brings to the table. He knows the system. The coaches are not allowed on the field and in the huddle during a game. If the guys have questions Vrabel will be able to help them out and give them advice on the fly. I like this move.

by paratrooper on Feb 27, 2009 3:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, they are.

Defensive players get to have a mic in the helmet now, too. Effectively, that puts the coach on the field.

by JacinB on Feb 27, 2009 3:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

At a time.

And, last I heard, Vrabel is also only one player.

by JacinB on Feb 27, 2009 3:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

and who do you think will be wearing the head set? Vrabel. Who will be asking questions or need some on the fly mentorship? The other 10 guys.. thats who.

by paratrooper on Feb 27, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I Think Vrabel Would Probably Be Fine In That Role

Only, though, if he’s an every down back. Right now, the consensus among the pundits seems to be that he’s more of a situational guy and that means he’s unlikely to be the helmet guy.

that 1 in 6 people in MO are now on food stamps? I’m sure the left is loving that!

by paratrooper on Feb 27, 2009 3:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't Surprise Me

The left loves to have lots of poor people. That way they’ll always feel needed and always know that there’s a segment of the population that’s happy to let the “liberals” run their lives for them (not that the “conservatives” have been any better for the last decade).

Know who the worst people in the world often are? The ones who “just want to help”. Often that phrase is just a euphemism for “I want to control your behavior because I think you’re too stupid to make your own decisions.”

by paratrooper on Feb 27, 2009 3:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No Drugs On This End

But I’m pro-legalization. If someone else wants to indulge, it’s got nothing to do with me and it’s none of my business until they do something to make it my business (e.g. driving drunk, stealing to support a habit, etc.). The drugs themselves aren’t the problem and trying to eradicate them isn’t the solution.

I'm Pro-Legalization For All

After all, it’s not like everyone’s going to go out and start snorting heroin just because they can (I’m certainly not, and I can’t imagine that the majority of people are that incapable of figuring out it’s a bad move). And it would do a lot to stabilize our issues around our borders (which are primarily War on Drugs-related…not just because of weed) and take major cash cows out of the hands of violent criminals who do things far worse than deal drugs (e.g. Cosa Nostra, al-Qaeda, FARC, street gangs, etc.).

Most of the unintended consequences of anti-drug laws are far worse for society than adding a few more junkies to the mix.

Can we stop talking about Herm? We had that discussion and he’s gone. It’s as pointless to discuss him now as it was to discuss Vermeil last year.

by UCrawford on Feb 27, 2009 3:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes.

Compared to what the options were to replace him with.

Just like I’ll make the case all day every day that you stick with Thigpen this year, even though I don’t know that I think he’s the long-term answer, and wait to get Bradford or McCoy or Tebow next year.

Change just for the sake of it isn’t necessarily a good thing. Sometimes, it makes more sense to be patient and stick things out just a little while longer because you know you can move on to something better later …

by JacinB on Feb 27, 2009 3:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I Understand

But he wasn’t making a point defending Herm…he was making a point about what he perceives as Haley’s problems. And just because he was (in my opinion) wrong about Herm when he backed him doesn’t automatically invalidate his opinion about Haley.

Except he is playing

Look, it seems from reports that we didn’t give up more than a 6th or 7th for a guy who will be a starter and will influence the starters we have. Now what players on the D do you think are ready to step up and lead this team? DJ, the 1st rounder who some have wondered aloud if he’s a bust? Tamba Hali? Who steps up, man? Vrabel will make plays and help transition into a system that requires better LB play. This is a great move, especially for the value.

If we wanted that ...

Why cut Donnie Edwards?

Donnie was a fan favorite. He’s a class guy. He’s got boatloads of experience and respect at his position. He’s also equally old, coming off a similarly bad year (his marred by injury), and also on the downside of his career.

Instead we cut him and give up a draft pick for a guy just like him, only less classy.

Valid Point

Although I think Vrabel is a bit more durable than Edwards at this point. Edwards’ biggest problem was that he couldn’t even get on the field.

2008 (16/14/0/0): Voted a defensive captain by his teammates for the fourth time … Led the team in tackles once (at SEA) and led the team in sacks once (vs. KC) in 2008.

Kansas City (9/7): Started at outside linebacker … Tallied four tackles (3 solo), two sacks, three quarterback hits and one pass defensed in the Patriots’ 17-10 win over the Chiefs … Sacked Damon Huard for a 2-yard loss to end the third quarter … Took down Huard a second time in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard sack … Disrupted a Brodie Croyle pass intended for Mike Cox in the first quarter … Teamed up with Richard Seymour to stuff Larry Johnson for no gain on a second-and-goal try with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter.
