Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

It defies the recession and logic, but just before free agency, teams actually will have more flexibility and salary-cap room. This is tremendous news for teams such as the Colts and Panthers, who are pressed against the cap, and not such good news for teams such as the Buccaneers and Chiefs, who were way under the cap. Now their advantage is somewhat compromised.

NFL.com Blogs " Blog Archive Salary cap expands to $127 million for 2009 "

The salary cap was thought to be set at $123 million this season but will increase $4 million. H/T Shawn in the FanPosts

oh and there goes our advantage in free agency

Not many guys out there worth paying that much money to anyway.

The vast majority of good players always get resigned by their team. The above average guys that DO make it to FA get vastly overpaid. Unless it is someone that can on his own make a tremendous impact on your team, you’re better off not going after those guys anyway.

The real value in free agency are the mid level players that you don’t have to pay a completely ridiculous salary to but will come in and do a solid job for you. Find your superstars in the draft.

Agreed

Draft the superstars and plug the holes in FA.

The only guy out there

That I would be willing to overpay would be Bart Scott.

Not on his play ability alone, but I think he would be a very good leader for those young guys on our defense. He comes from a defense that knows how to be tough and work each other up. I think a guy that could bring that kind of experience and leadership would be worth overpaying.

Except

I think Scott is going to stay in Baltimore, what do you think about Jason Brown??

He might or he'll probably want to go to the Jets to be with his old DC

I’m just saying if I’m Pioli I would throw a lot of money at Scott to be the leader of our defense for the next 5 years or so.

Jason Brown? I dunno much about him so I can’t really say.

I DO know there are very good value Centers in the 2nd round that would probably make a bigger impact on our offensive line than any of the 2nd round tackles. I might lean more towards drafting Mack or Unger in the 2nd and try to find a vet RT (unless they like Richardson).

by ChiefDJ on Feb 25, 2009 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

Although

I suppose you could sign Brown to a 3 or 4 year contract and still draft Mack or Unger and play them at Guard for a couple years and eventually have them take over at Center.

stole it right out of my mind

I was right about to post that.

Brown is one of the best centers in the league at 25 years old. He got the starting nod back in 2006 and hasn’t missed a game since. Consider the fact that last year he had arguably his best campaign and he played in the same division as Shaun Rogers, and Casey Hampton his ability at center allowed them to play these guys one on one and destroy the 3-4

Here is the problem

Why would a top free agent want to come to KC? It would have to be for the money but are the Chiefs willing to pay top dollar for someone like Brown or Scott? The reality is that we do not have any kind of pull as of right now because of our record and current situation. Pioli has a good reputation but players either seek money or the opportunity to win championship. Brown is being pursued by the Dolphins and the Ravens which have a much better chance at winning right now than the Chiefs. If we were to sign him or Scott it would be because we were willing to pay the highest amount. The question is are we?

by Nelly on Feb 25, 2009 8:24 PM CST reply actions

heres my beef
Pioli has a good reputation

that’s it right there. Our pull lies in Pioli and the fact that we have young talent on our team. No veteran is going to want to come to us near the end of their career, but if I were Jason Brown. The going ons in KC would certainly intrigue me

Is it Pioli or Haley

Am not sure a player would really care about who the GM is more than who is the coach. Pioli could be an asset in terms of the players’ agentsif he had good experiences in dealing with them. The thing is that he had the draw in NE and he doesn’t have that here as of yet.

I think another problem with contending against Miami for Jason Brown is...

The fact that he can go play for a playoff team and live on South Beach. And they have Bill Parcell’s to help build their future which would counter Pioli’s pull.

by JZChiefsfan on Feb 25, 2009 8:41 PM CST reply actions

My point exactly

At least as of right now we do not look like a playoff team so all we have to offer is money and potential.
