What The Chief's Can Do In This Off-Season...

I haven't been on here very long and I'm not the most knowledgable (sp?) guy in the world, even with football, but since I was stationed in Alaska away from the city I was born and raised in and watching the team I've loved since I old enough to understand the idea of football I've started paying closer and closer attention to the Chiefs, what they do in the off-season, their coaches, GM, their FA and Draft picks and the whole NFL in general.  I wanted to post on here, and anybody that can help me more understand if what I put down on here is good and ideas or if something the Chiefs can do differently than please enlighten me.  People can always make room to learn about football and what it all entails and the best way for us fans to do that is to share ideas and why we think our ideas are good and how they can work.

I'm not going to get into exact picks through the draft.  That's something we can share in the posts below.  I'm not computer savvy so I'm not going to put down any links or anything like that but just share my opinion of what I'm seeing.  Scott Pioli is a VERY smart man.  All over ESPN and SI are talking about other teams picking up certain players that we've talked about wanting but talk of them going to other teams because no one knows what Pioli is up to.  We can only go by what he has done in the past and the way I see things (from very far away, mind you) is some moves that my rock the fan base for a little bit but jump us into a future of winning very quickly.

Matt Cassel has signed his Franchise tender and it was turned in so if anyone wants him then they have to cough up the draft picks to get him.  A certain player that we want in the first round of the draft  *cough* Aaron Curry *cough* would need to be had in the first round but can we trade our second round pick this year and 1st and 2nd next year to pick up Cassel?  I think we can arrange that.  I say  2nd round because, first, we need an LB like Aaron Curry (who had a pretty good combine this year) to make an impact for our defense.  Second, Pioli is a man that covets and uses what other people (a.k.a. teams) throw away and so his big expertiese comes in from the 3rd on.  Look at where he picked Brady, Cassel, Mayo...and from that we can walk away with Cassel and Curry in the first day of the draft and people would already put K.C. in the A+ rating of our draft.  From the third on (oh, and this is not including if we trade L.J.  He's not gone yet...) we have plenty of wiggle room to pick up a QB like Josh Freeman or even Nathan Brown somewhere in there while picking up a DE (depending on what defensive scheme we're doing.  You can enlighten me on that direction.)

In the FA market there are a lot of players out there that all the sports people are saying, "Bart Scott is going ot the Jets or the Giants!" "Vima is going to the Vikings!"  The Vilma one I was just making up.  It's just and example of the secrecy that Pioli, Hunt, and Haley are doing and with how much cap room we have, especially with the players we've already let go, we got room to go after guys like that.  People say, "Pioli picks 2nd-teir players and dosen't go after the big FA's!" but first, on that one, Pioli hasn't been in a situation as a GM with a team in this big a need of some veteran leadership.  Haley hasn't ever been a head coach in the NFL so he's got to rely heavily on his defensive coaches (since he is an offensive-minded coach) and put some trust into what they're doing.  Since we have the room, I say we go after Bart Scott AND Johnathan Vilma in the FA because we need veteran leadership on the defensive side of the ball.  If we are moving to a 3-4 scheme than that will be more important.  From some stuff I was reading online it looks like Bart Scott could resign with the Ravens but Canty from Dallas is another great pickup that we could get to give that veteran leadership and teach Curry, Johnson, and Williams a lot about playing the position and playing in the 3-4 scheme.

For the offensive side of the ball there are a lot of WR's in the draft to look at.  If you watched the combine there was some good work-outs there and so some people to look at for all that.  In the FA there is offensive center Brown from the Ravens.  He is pricy but is very good at his position and can bring a lot to our offensive line, especially if we draft a bookend to Branden Albert and move Niswanger over, knocking out McCintosh to be a backup.

I like the idea of going after players like Brown, Canty, Scott, and Vilma to help bring in some defensive leadership to the changing of the defensive scheme and be play-makers/game changers.  The draft is VERY important but so is who we pick up in FA and we need at least 1 big name and that would be Bart Scott, to sign and anchor our defense for more years to come.  All of this is speculation.  I could see us sticking with Thigpen and developing the Arrowspread offense around him, but for now and until that happens I like the idea of picking up Cassel and anchoring our defense with draft positions and some FA picks that could blow the minds of these sports analysts right out of their skulls.

So...as my first fanpost, what do you all think?  I'm a good listener and take constructive critisizm very well.
