Glen Dorsey Can Play NT
I'm sick of people saying Glen can't be a zero technique. The guy commanded double teams all year and thats the main job of your NT. Just because he will be playing NT doesn't mean he can't get to the quarterback either. If you look at Arizona's 4-3 under Darnell Dockett (300 lbs) got to the quarterback. Jay Ratliff in Dallas (300 lbs) got to the quarterback. Also, you got guys like Ferguson in Miami who just play the position with solid technique and can get away with their 300 lbs frame. Dorsey is strong enough and he is used to this role in that at LSU his orders were to plug up the line to let the ends and linebackers reak havoc. He is a bit short and won't be batting down a lot of passes, but he is just as tall as Casey Hampton. Not to mention Dorsey can pack on a few pounds. I bet he can get up to 315-320. I'm telling you our defense could be pretty sick next year.
ROLB Hali, Sintim (2nd round, Virginia)
RDE A Smith (FA, Cardinals), Wright, Boone
RILB D Johnson, Felder (6th round, Cal)
NT Dorsey, Wright (FA, Patriots)
LILB Crowder (FA, Dolphins), Beisal (FA Cardinals)
LDE Tyler, McBride
LOLB Curry (1st), Harris (FA, Chargers), D Williams
Out of those 5 free agents 4 will come cheap. Crowder would be the only expensive one. And if you bitch that I'm ignoring the O-line with these moves I think we would still have plenty of CAP space to sign guys like Jason Brown of the Ravens, Ray Willis of the Seahawks and draft a mid round guard. And yes Hali can play OLB. He's listed at 275, but in reality he is only 255. He dropped like 20 lbs last offseason and that was one of the reasons he sucked it up last year. I got him playing on the right side so Curry would be the one covering the TE. So stop freaking out about the 3-4, it looks a lot better than the front 7 we had last year.

I agree
Dorsey can play NT. I can’t believe folks have him playing DE in a 3-4. That makes me laugh.

Is that why every expert asked where Dorsey would fit in a 3-4 suggests DE?
…Or is it because in a 3-4 DE you want someone who is big enough to take on double teams and still have speed to get in the backfield after the QB and RB…Dorsey would excel at DE in a 3-4 scheme…
by woodman212 on Feb 24, 2009 8:45 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No way
Dorsey would excel as a NT He took on the double team last year as a rookie and had a decent year. He did good as a rookie. the problem is everyone thought he was going to be a sack artist. If we wanted a sack artist we would have kept Allen

Let me get this straight
Last season we used Dorsey as the run stuffer/undertackle & Tank as the pass rusher? Dorsey took on the double team so he could free up Tank for the rush? Is this what Whitlock tried to point out towards the end of the season?

nice job. I really want Crowder and Sintim int he second would be awesome.
Sintim-Crowder-Johnson-Curry seems legit to me

I think we would be better served
with DJ playing outside and Curry inside.

you cant really go wrong with either, but I think Currys a better pass rusher than DJ. He ran 4.56 at the combine so hes pretty damn fast too.
by SayHeyWerd on Feb 24, 2009 7:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
He is fast
So is DJ though. DJ is a better outside backer than inside. Curry is big enough to be dominate inside. Also DJ would be better in coverage but Curry…..Shit you might be right. Does this kid have a hole in his game.

DJ is not a 3-4 OLB
If they get Curry, DJ and Curry both should be playing inside. Neither of them are pass rushing specialists.
by ChiefDJ on Feb 24, 2009 9:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Curry can be....
He has the speed, just needs moves…that is a pretty common diagnosis of his pass rushing capability….
Why dont you think DJ could be?
by woodman212 on Feb 24, 2009 10:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
DJ can be as well.
The 3-4 gives you more opportunity on the outside edge. Besides when has DJ had a chance to be that “specialist”? The Chiefs don’t blitz.

Happy
I would be so happy if we get all of those free agents. I think I would prefer Canty or Olshansky over Smith though.
by SpearChampion on Feb 24, 2009 8:20 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I like your draft choices
felder really stood out to me from the combine footage that I saw of the linebackers. Curry looked like an absolute freak at the combine, he was so much better than all the other linebackers on the field, he must have been scary good in person.
I would personally prefer we leave dorsey at NT and add canty for DE. The two free agents I feel we really need to target are canty and jason brown. they are both 26, so they are young enough to productively play out a 5 or 6 yr contract, and become cornerstones on each side of the ball.

Looks pretty good...EXCEPT
The thought of Hali in any type of coverage scares the shit out of me…
I think he would be much better served with his hand in the ground. He should also gain that weight back (get around 270). When he healthy he is a formidable run-stopping/high motor RE. He can succeed in a 3-4 from a DE position, i don’t think he has enough athleticism to play in space which is sometimes required of an OLB in 3-4 scheme.

Why....?
Why is noone on here lobbying for us to take Tyson Jackson (the highest rated 3-4 DE in the draft) ??
Dorsey’s former teammate would make a great DE if we do make the switch…

Because...
he will probably go in the 1st round. We won’t have a shot at him.

Sorry
What did you think of our 5-2 #1 against the run?
by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 24, 2009 10:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Who said
the Chiefs were going 3/4 these are all just rumors! I do think Dorsey could play NT. DE no way!
It doesn’t matter anyway because they are not going to switch schemes… At least not this year and not on every down. We might see some 3/4 as a change of pace but 4/3 will still be our base defense.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Feb 24, 2009 9:16 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
They are just rumors....
But from things they have said since then they seem pretty sure to be intent on moving to a 3-4 base…
And Dorsey would be more efficient as a 3-4 DE…all he lacks to be ideal there is 2-4 inches…he can overcome that with speed if he is the player we thought he was last year…
by woodman212 on Feb 24, 2009 9:31 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
When have we ever been wrong before? ;)
As I understand it, Dorsey doesn’t have the kind of reach you’d like a DE to have and doesn’t have the size and lower body strength you’d like your NT to have. I’m just guessing, but I think they’re going to find a spot for Dorsey in this defense but they’re not going to design a scheme around him. They’ll tell him to bulk up and play NT.
by ChiefsDude on Feb 25, 2009 11:16 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm sorry but i have to disagree
“all he lacks is 2-4 inches”??? Are you high?
Not only he is too short like you mentioned, he is WAY to slow to be playing a 5 tech. And as we witnessed this year, little pass-rush ability (at least he hasn’t developed it ).

And we sack his butt before the pass comes out

I'm sorry to have to be so blunt but...
GLEN DORSEY CAN NOT PLAY A ZERO TECH!!! I don’t know what games you watched last year, but i NEVER dorsey take on a double team AND NOT LOSE!! anyone can take on a double team but not everyone can BEAT IT! Dorsey NEVER did that in his rookie season.. IN FACT dorsey didn’t win against one on one blockin!!! But i’m not mad at this and don’t think he’s a terrible player b/c he couldn’t because thats not the type of player he is!! He’s a shooter.. meaning he reads the snap and shots a gap. YOU PUT A STUNT ON FOR HIM EVERY PLAY in other words. AND HE WINS THOUGHS! but if you ask him to stuff a hole, and possibly take on a double team well enough that the guard or center doesn’t have time to chip off and block the LB after, HE WILL NEVER BE GOOD! and that’s what a ZERO TECH needs to be able to do. the 3 tech is the stunter and one that needs to play just like Dorsey did in college..
THERE IS NO CHANCE HE CAN PLAY NT/ ZERO TECH/ 1 TECH!! In a 3-4 the guy’s not even a starter..
by spencercole2 on Feb 24, 2009 10:03 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
He
didn’t play a 3 technique in college.Did you even watch him at LSU? And yeah most people don’t shed double teams, but it will free up other players. Thats the point of a NT! And yeah I think Dorsey can shed a center one on one. NTs don’t put up great stats, but they are vital to a good 3-4 D.
by chiefsfan1384 on Feb 24, 2009 10:34 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You sure about that?
Dorsey played RDT in college, correct?
by woodman212 on Feb 24, 2009 10:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah...
but just because he played RDT doesn’t necessarily mean he played a 3-technique.
by chiefsfan1384 on Feb 24, 2009 10:36 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No actually it does...
A RDT is called that in a Base package with your strong side on the Right(lined up against air, obviously changes with an offense across from you). meaning you have from left to right :
5/6 tech 1 tech 3 tech 5/7 tech..
and yes i did watch him in college and yes he was a 3 tech. And i agree he easily could beat a center one on one shooting the gaps, but it NEVER HAPPENS THAT A CENTER HAS A ONE ON ONE BLOCK. on every play they have help from one of the guards to double team and then they chip away. thats why you put him at the 3 tech b/c the center will be on the 1tech while the OT has to deal with an end and other blitzes.
And your absolutely correct when you say takin on a double team frees up other players, but what you didn’t understand (prolly b/c i didn’t explain well so my bad) is that he’s not “good” enough to demand a double team to free those guys up. He’s not big enough to over power one guy so the offense has to get a hand on him before they go out to their blocks. And again THIS IS OK, we just have know that he can’t and don’t put him in a position to fail (1tech)..
by spencercole2 on Feb 24, 2009 10:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
OKAY
MAYBE IF I POST IN ALL CAPS IT WILL MAKE A GOOD POINT!!!! DORSEY COULD PROBABLY PLAY 3-4 DE DONT YOU THINK? I MEAN HE’D BE A STARTER AND YOU RULED HIM OUT COMPLETELY THAT’S HARDLY FAIR. PROBABLY NOT NT BUT THE DESTRUCTION HE CAUSES COULD CAUSE A LEGITIMATE ENOUGH DISTRACTION FOR OUR DE’S AND OLB’S TO CAUSE SOME DAMAGE. WHAT DT GETS INSANE AMOUNT OF SACKS HIS FIRST YEAR ANYWAY? DOES ANYONE ELSE KNOW THAT GLENN DORSEY LED ALL ROOKIE D LINEMEN IN TACKLES? DOES THAT MAKE CHRIS LONG AN UNLEGITIMATE STARTER TOO?? HOW ABOUT VERNON GHOULSTON, LAWRENCE JACKSON, KENTWAN BALMER, AND SEDRICK ELLIS!!? ARE THEY ILLEGITIMATE STARTERS TOO?
Sorry I’m just poking fun. Dorsey will find a spot to start in no matter what D we run to is all I’m saying

The OP
has Dorsey at NT and Tyler at RDE. This should obviously be reversed. Tyler is bigger and slower, and would be much more suited (though possibly not able) to playing NT. Dorsey, meanwhile, would be much better served by moving to DE.
by Seth_C on Feb 24, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
O yeah...
Tank Tyler would really make a good NT. Give me a break. We would get killed in the run game.
by chiefsfan1384 on Feb 24, 2009 10:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
LOL...
Tyler isn’t even that much bigger than Dorsey. He’s like 1 inch taller
by chiefsfan1384 on Feb 24, 2009 10:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
who cares about height at NT?!?!?!?!
Tank is the strongest dude on our team….He would have to put on weight to play NT but he would be much better at it than Dorsey whose weapon is speed…(sounds like a DE, huh?)

good point there, tank is strong

We will...
see how it works out. Dorsey is no wimp either. I just think Dorsey is the most sound technition on the D line. A lot of this is between the ears, its not just about physical stature.

Tyler is strong and cant be moved thats why
he goes by the name tank and coming out of college some scouts thought he would be a great NT as he is super strong and can put on weight.
