Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Let's say the Patriots asked Kansas City for its second-round pick in 2009 and 2010. Pioli values picks in the 30s the way most team value picks in the teens. I'd be stunned if he did it. I think he'd trust Haley to pick a Josh Freeman in this draft in the third round, let's say, and work with Freeman, Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen over the next couple of years and say, "Let the best man win.''

Pat White over Freeman

In other news..

You have a Pro Bowl defensive line and KC Crappy LBs. Or you have Pro Bowl LBs and KC Crappy lineman. Which choice equates to a better defense?

a) Lineman most valuable
b) Linebackers most valuable
c) You need both, idiot. (missing the point?)
d) Depends on the scheme

Hahaha.

Right! Offenses in the NFL are changing. There is now more than ever a place for your Pat Whites and Tim Tebows. Spreads and wildcats galore. White would be a dandy in the “ArrowSpread”

He will get drafted an called a QB

He won’t be an every down QB. The Wildcat was fun but….Come on. How often did it work against good defenses? How many games did this “Arrowspread” win? They are nice rinckles, they aren’t base offenses

I don't believe for a second

that the Chiefs lost games due to the Arrowspread. Take another look at the defense.

Seriously, anyone who thinks that last year’s team with an atrocious defense was a good representation of an NFL team running the spread is just wrong.

by Seth_C on Feb 23, 2009 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

Ok...

Why did this offense disappear in the second half of a lot of games. Don’t blame the crappy defense because the offense still has to score.

AFC West Champs in 2009? Mayyybee.

by cmpotter on Feb 23, 2009 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

Why did the offense disappear?

We saw this as soon as Herm came to KC – he and his staff absolutely could not (or maybe would not) make second-half adjustments. We’d start off the first half pretty well, then be dead in the second half because the other team had made adjustments, and we didn’t. This happened all the time, no matter which QB was playing or which scheme we were running.

by Seth_C on Feb 23, 2009 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

Dead wrong.

The spread was perfect. Our defense was horrid. Here we go again.. what are you guys thinking?? How many games did the ArrowSpread win? Apples to apples, please. Our offense scored more than enough points to win us games. 21-3 on Tampa Bay (after Thigpen caught that TD in the end zone) and our defense blows it. They blew – HARD. The spread is going nowhere. You’ll see. I can’t convince you of it. Just know that I am right.

The "Arrowspread" won't win us anything meaningful

It might help us put up some decent yardage, but that kind of offense is too one dimensional to be successful in the NFL. We went 1-10 with the spread too, don’t forget!

Look at the kind of offenses on teams that win championships. I don’t see the Steelers, Giants, or Patriots running the spread.

I like Thigpen, but only as a backup for this team. We have a new regime in town, let’s go get a legitmate franchise quarterback who will lead us to some playoff victories.

Are you basing that on them coming out in the shotgun typically?

Or because Willie Parker had a lousy Super Bowl? The running yards both Parker and Moore racked up this season seem to contradict the calling Pittsburgh a “spread” offense. Typically, NE runs out of the shotgun also, and yet we wouldn’t call either necessarily a “spread” offense.

In our mind a “spread” is typically characterize by the use of 4 WO sets and often an empty backfield. Why would you say Pittsburgh ran a spread?

Croyle will never cut it in the NFL. The guy doesn’t know how to read defenses on the fly or look off receivers. He is years off and may never deserve a starting spot ever again.

Ah, the spread. Finally earning its place in the NFL. I might suggest you all re-think the need to have a franchise QB if you run it. You want him to be good, yes. Definately. You want him to be mobile. But you don’t HAVE to have John Elway (who I now hear has full-blown AIDS).

I understand too that Wilfork was drafted 20 or so

But still. One could argue Raji could be even better. Some have him in their top 5. Just comes down to BPA + need, right. Raji is hands down the best DT. Dorsey last year needs to be put in perspective should be go 3-4 in which case you still had a great draft pick which could pan out to be another Seymour.

Umm… our new head coach was an offensive coordinator he will have the final say on what offense we run, even with gailey staying in some capacity. I would not expect for us to run the same sheme as last year.

In my opinion

If curry is gone and stafford is in our lap i say we go oline and hopefully we can get monroe who is a monster or jason smith that guy seems to be another monster we would have a running game for the next 10 years with two strong tackles thig would go off and we would be able to pound the rock . but we would have to go off and spend money in free agency.

by sexassassin on Feb 23, 2009 2:18 PM CST reply actions

My only concern...

with taking a tackle with the #3 pick, is that it probably means we don’t take an interior lineman in the second round. I’ve had a raging hard-on for Mack or Unger for month and don’t want any draft day blue balls.

by HIV 2 Elway on Feb 23, 2009 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

I bet we don't take a tackle with the #3 pick.

Rage away because a Mack or Unger in the 2nd round would be a great pick up to be sure. Thing is I think Pioli would agree that OL is a position that can be built in later rounds. Not saying that as a rule but looking at his draft history you would see if could be done. The most progressive, yet risky, idea is to go 3-4 and take Raji and move Dorsey to DE. Defensive line is looking much better. Other plan would be to keep Dorsey as your nose and draft Curry – both LB and DL would need some tending to later in the draft. FA is looking weaker by the day isn’t it? If we land say a Bart Scott then the Raji Dorsey duo could pack quite a punch and put us on the map quicker than HIV 2 Elway exploding over Mack come Round 2 on draft day.

Pioli's offensive line draft picks

Here are the starters he’s drafted and the round he picked them:

Logan Mankins – 1st
Matt Light – 2nd
Nick Kaczur – 3rd
Dan Koppen – 5th

If he’s looking for a starter, he’ll probably draft him sooner rather than later.

Knowing that we got our 1st round pick in Albert last year we probably won’t be getting a tackle at #3. I wouldn’t be surprised if we went OL in 2nd round or later.

We could always move Albert to RT

A position change worked for Jonathan Ogden. He was on the All-Rookie team his first year as a G and probably entering the HOF as a LT.

by Joel Thorman on Feb 23, 2009 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

You could

That would give us some awesome bookends. I’d rather us build the line like New England did. Didn’t have to have two “cap busters” on the line right out of the gate. If you used that #3 to invest in beefing up the D then I think the ROI will be realized that much quicker. If you take Unger or Mack and move Rudy to RG then the last thing we need is a replacement for Sackintosh. We scored a lot of points though even with our CURRENT OL. And the though of a Curry addition or a Raji/Dorsey combo up front make the hairs stand up. Although far-fetched at the moment I would hope we would end up with a poor-man’s Wilfork/Seymour combo there. Curry and DJ back there would be awesome too.

I wouldn't want Freeman.

As a student at K-State I’ve watched him for the past couple of years and haven’t been that impressed. He is very, very raw. The only reason he is getting looks is because of his size. He’s had some pretty big games against teams like Texas but he has never been that exciting to watch and usually causes stomach ulcers from the sidelines when the game was on the line. He doesn’t play with heart, he’s sluggish and likes to look good. He’s constantly seen at parties around campus during the football season. I’d like the Chiefs to interview him before considering that. I think he has a lot of growing up to do.

My prediction is if he is drafted in the late 1st round or early 2nd he will have 2 or 3 decent years as a starter for a team and then gradually plateau until his release. Like Leftwich, I think he will float around the league from team to team.

Of course this is all bias because of where I am, but I don’t believe in him and you need that in a quarterback. Unless he is drafted by a team with a beyond-good quarterback coach, I think the Chiefs would be better off not drafting him.

I could be wrong. I’m young and inexperienced, but this is what I think. Take it for what it’s worth. (:

I'm never working for this guy again.

If you want to run what Arizona did

Then draft Crabtree. If not, then why not use that same offense which scored us points last year. Sure, you can change it up a bit. If we had a middle of the road defense last year we would have possibly won the West. Not because we would have been that great but because our division was so weak. We had one of the worst defenses ever to set foot in Arrowhead. Our offense was respectable post-spread.
