Emmitt Smith's Analyst Contract With ESPN Not Renewed

To take a light break from all the great info coming in from the NFL combine, it appears that ESPN has finally decided to upgrade their NFL analysis by not renewing Emmitt Smith's contract.

Per Rotoworld (who offer the best summation):

An overdue move. Truly one of the worst personalities in sports TV history, Smith exhibited surprisingly weak knowledge of the game and consistently butchered the English language. He did give hope to those young children hoping to become Hall of Fame running backs despite lesser intelligence.

Yup...I honestly can't think of a former athlete who was worse at analyzing the sport they used to play than Emmitt Smith.  Michael Irvin and Magic Johnson come close...and I think a case could certainly be made for Joe Theismann, who one writer I read described (accurately, I feel) as being like "a dumb, bitchy girlfriend who doesn't know anything about football and tries to make anyone watching the game miserable".  But Emmitt was definitely worse...one of only two commentators (along with Tony Kornheiser) whose voice alone made me want to jump through the screen and strangle them.  Or immediately change the channel and not come back.

So kudos to the Worldwide Leader on a smart move.  And to celebrate, here's a medley of Emmitt's greatest hits:

A sad, sad day in the blogging world

Pain. Laughter. Suffering.

All emotions I felt while watching Emmitt Smith as a broadcaster. You will be sorely missed, Emmitt.

I Hope They Don't Hire Anyone To Replace Him

Just because I think that their little group is overloaded already. Too many voices trying to get in on the conversation and too little useful or interesting information getting out.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.

They still have Herm

He is good for some one liners

At Least Herm's Not An Illiterate Boob

And you’ve got to think that having been a coach he’ll probably be a little better informed than a ex-player who played a position that’s only real job requirement is “run through the hole”.

Of course, if he isn’t then that goes a long way towards explaining last season. :)

You play to win the game

We didn’t back into the playoffs…we won our game..the other teams lost theirs…we didn’t back into the playoffs.

He was terrible,

but he will one day be someone’s Master’s thesis on “schadenfreude.”

I first hated him, then as the malapropisms began to snowball, I watched him intently…sometimes to the point of hearing him abuse the language even when he didn’t.

"and peep this ethiopian queen from philly taking classes abroad, she studying film and photo flash focus record"

I don't have religion. I have Baduizm.

There Was Another Clip

Of Emmitt bouncing along to Young Jeezy as the camera cut back to the analyst desk.

Oh well, at least he didn’t scream and giggle during the games like Magic did. That was annoying. Then again, he wasn’t doing in-game commentary.

I Hope they hire Brett Favre

so he can retire from analyzing at the end of the season and I can love me some Brett Favre….. the right way lol

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

And Then Unretire, And Then Retire Again...

Favre strikes me as more of the Emmitt Smith style of analyst rather than the Jaworski/Steve Young type. I get the impression that he wouldn’t be all that into doing research or making insightful comments. Maybe he’d be a good color guy for the games.

I Forgot Ismail Was An Analyst

That’s how unmemorable he is.

I do like Woodson a lot, though…he does a great job. Very knowledgeable and he does his homework. I wonder if it’s something to do with how famous the player was. Seems like the bigger the name they had when they played, the more likely they are to think they can coast once they get to the analyst booth. Keyshawn, Irvin, and Smith were all big stars but horrible analysts. But Jaworski and Woodson weren’t superstars as players, but are great analysts. Bradshaw was a big name, but I think he’s pretty terrible as an analyst. Len Dawson, on the other hand, shoots that theory full of holes because he’s a big name and an outstanding broadcaster and analyst.

Almost as bad as Magic Johnson.

Magic Was Bad

But his butchering of the English language wasn’t nearly as bloody as Emmitt’s. And Magic was more knowledgeable about the sport…if I hadn’t known Emmitt was a pro player, I probably wouldn’t have believed the guy even watched pro football. Very close, but I think Emmitt barely edges Magic out for worst sports analyst.

Sometimes I feel that way when Phil Simms calls a game. :)

Neil Smith was pretty bad when he was doing Chiefs post game shows.

I Almost Forgot Simms

I don’t like him either…although his problems stem from appearing to be one of those old school commentators who think the entire world of sports boils down to guts and moxie and “heart” and thinks stats have no place in the sports world at all. And while stats are certainly limited in the analysis of football (because it’s the most complex and difficult sport to analyze statistically) any broadcaster in the 21st century who thinks that they serve no useful function (as Simms actually appears to believe) is simply an idiot.

At least he can talk intelligibly, though. I think Simms is a poor man’s version of Joe Theismann in bad broadcasting, though…and boy does he get pissy with Collinsworth.

He is a lot like Tim McCarver in baseball.

They announce the game as if everyone watching is watching the sport for their first time.
